Chamon Chamon. I used to pile down to the Chamon on a regular basis when I was a student, due to a) its convenient location on the Bristol Road, close to the University and b) the good prices. Two very important things for lazy, poor students. Going back again recently, its good to see that little has changed. This is, by and large, a good thing. Firstly, the prices are still very reasonable. Hurrah. Secondly, the menu is still pretty extensive. Thirdly, the food is still good. It’s not ‘blow you away and change your life’ good, but it’s ‘good solid Birmingham balti’ good. The chicken passanda is particularly good, and they always do a top quality naan. The décor and music aren’t amazing, but there’s always a really nice, informal, friendly atmosphere which makes up for slightly worn furniture. It’s been lived in by generations of hungry students, after all…

This one is a new a one on me. I visited Chamon for the first time last night and had a very enjoyable evening. In what was for me an act of almost incomparable decadence, I had a starter. It was dhal soup — the first time I’ve had dhal as a soup and it was a promising start to the meal, satisfyingly salty without being overbearing. The menu is extremely extensive at Chamon — after much deliberating, and discovering that dhansak was not in stock, I ordered lamb pathia with a plain naan. The naan was huge and delicious, tasting exactly as a naan should. The pathia was also very good indeed with an extremely tasty sauce. My only criticism is that it could of done with a little bit more meat in. Overall, I’d recommend Chamon. The prices are reasonable and the service is smart and attentive. My only criticisms are that the tables are a bit close together and the music was a little strange in places, but these are very minor. Otherwise, great stuff!

Birmingham loves a good curry and it turns out so do the many students who come to study in the Birmingham area. As such, Chamon can always be expected to be full of a variety of students who are taking advantage of great quality balti. This place serves up good food and without charging extortionate prices meaning that the student crowd needn’t worry about doing too much damage to the dreaded overdraft. They allow you to take in your own alcoholic beverages meaning that the night becomes just that little bit less expensive, which once more from a student perspective can only be considered a good thing. There isn’t much left to say, except that Chamon is another example of why Birmingham is the curry capital of the country.

Indian restaurant on Bristol road in selly oak. full of students all year round(academic year) as the food is good, hearty portions and cheap. You have to take your own alcoholic drinks, so it makes the whole experience a little cheaper, especially as it is right next to a small tesco, so if you’ve forgotten its not too bad. the service is great and they seem to love students in there.

The Chamon specialises in Balti curry, and boasts an atonishingly long menu(including some English food for your boring friend). The food is really very good; the chef’s specials are amaxing value for money and taste fantastic. The family naans are a sight to behold, they serve four confortably. Students also get free onion bajhis to start. It’s a fairly large restaurant and caters for large groups, and is open from six in the evening ’til about two in the morning. Décor is western, with pop music. Unlicensed, so bring your own booze. Also does takeaway. The only thing that lets it down is the service; it’s astonishingly slow at times. That said, the food is always worth the wait. Meat is halal and vegetarian options are plentiful. Highly reccommended, but not if you’re in a hurry!
