This little shop fits perfectly into deepest Kemptown. Welcoming, unpretentious and friendly, it offers unisex haircutting and colouring, and according to the literature, will soon offer traditional cut-throat wet shaves as well. On entry, you will be greeted by a genteelly suspicious curly dog on a long lead. On passing her inspection, you may proceed to a little waiting area. Usually you won’t need an appointment, but it might be as well to make one if you want something more than the basic cut. The décor has a feeling of the handmade about it that makes me feel instantly at home, and the clientele of regulars is as friendly as the stylists — it couldn’t be further from some of the branded salons I’ve walked into in a spirit of investigation and then walked swiftly out of. If you haven’t had a haircut for ten years, you still won’t be made to feel like you’ve somehow been put on the naughty step — a feeling I’ve experienced once before in the hands of someone wielding scissors as though they were descended from Excalibur and wearing an apron emblazoned with what I can only imagine was a famous name. Your basic hair cut, if it’s not a restyle, will come in at about £20 for long hair, although it will be less if it’s only a trim or if your hair isn’t a couple of feet long. They also cater to the more unusual of tastes, and will dye bits of your hair odd colours and shave your scalp in interesting patterns if that’s your thing. The conversation in here is far more interesting than ‘where did you go on your holidays?’ as well — last time I was here we flitted between kickboxing, current events and the traditional music of Thailand before they gave me two or three excellent restaurant recommendations and sent me happily on my way. This place is well worth a visit — they will chat to you, send you out looking better than you went in and not lighten your wallet too much as they do it.

Fab place which is reasonably priced snd you get a good haircut in a bright cheerful atmosphere. The place is a unisex salon and there is no need for an appointment which can sometimes mean you have to wait a while as the salon is very popular.

Barber Blacksheep is my fave little place t go and have a trim, is conveniently(for me) located the middle of George’s Road and Kemptown village. unlike of a lot of ‘barbers’ in Brighton Barbers Blacksheep looks and feels like a normal hair salon, with a nice décor and chatty staff. It’s walk appointments only so be prepared to wait, but there are plenty of chairs and mags while you wait. They are barbers rather than trained hair stylists so I wouldn’t go there for a full restyle but you can get a fringe trim for £7 and full head trim for £12.

This is salon is one of a kind. Although its essentially just a barbers the staff can do a entire restyle for next to nothing with a maximum cost of a wash, cut & finish at £19! Its walk-in only, but they are usually fully staffed so its never a ridiculous wait. You get what you pay for in some respects as a lot of the hairdressors are obviosly not über experienced stylists but at these prices whos moaning! You also dont get to chose who does your hair you just have to go to whoevers free, so dont get attached to anyone. All the staff are wicked and one of them always brings their lil dog who has a pineapple ponytail! How cute?!
