Popped in for a pint as, mistakenly read by us, it had a beer garden. Friendly service, reasonable choice of ales and wines. Good show, behind the bar, of spirits. Comfortable seating. But, it was a pub, nothing extra to write home about.

Good value but the food is nothing special; also the selection of ciders and beers isn’t very good.

Stopped in for lunch today at the Mitre Tavern. they claim to be famous for their fish and chips. I’ve been in Cambridge for a few days now, so I have been waiting for an opportunity to get some fish and chips. And it was fantastic! The interior has the feel of a traditional British pub. Apparently, there has been a pub here with different names and ownership for a while, but nothing inside looks old. It’s actually kind of modern looking. Very cool inside. As I said, I ordered the fish and chips and it was exactly what I was hoping it would be. It was flaky cod fish with a light, tasty batter that was perfectly golden brown. I also got the mushy peas, which were great. You know how sometimes there can be cream or butter in them to make them richer? These mushy peas had a very organic ‘pea’ flavor with chunks of peas. And that’s it. The fries were thick cut and well cooked. I also got a Nicholson(4.0) to drink and really enjoyed that. Why does beer taste so much better here? I paid £10.95 for my fish and chips. Mine was Cod. There was a cheaper Pollack and chips for £8.95. My beer was £4. I took one star off though, because this is another one of those Cambridge establishments that has no host at the door to seat you and no sign that says seat yourself. Or «grab one of us, order and sit down». Let’s face it, everyone from America, France, Spain, Italy are all used to being seated and having our order taken by someone. Unless you walk into a fast food place or a deli type of place, where you obviously order food at the counter. Tourism generates a lot of business, especially in the summer. No one wants to be confused and feel awkward. I just think a simple sign on the table with one sentence about the seating/ordering procedure, like at the Eagle, would be extremely helpful. Great place though. The bartender/server that I finally did talk to and order from was really friendly, helped me pick a beer and then even came to ask if everything was ok. He was great. And the food and beer were excellent.

Its a Nicholsons pub, at such you expect a good range of bar food and real ales in a fairly traditional surrounding particularly if the pub is of a particular age or has history. I don’t think this pub reaches those standards its just better than a Weatherspoons but more expensive. Service was poor, beer choice was poor and so was the quality. Pity not Ni holdings usual standard.

This is great pub food! The cottage pie is amazing!!! it’s the ultimate in British comfort food. Good service. Great beers/ale selection. Atmosphere is typical British pub. I would definitely return again!

Shockingly good food! So typical annoying American tourists constantly fantasizing about fish & chips, a friend and I decided to try the Mitre on a whim. Following a few hours of sightseeing, we stopped by at around 3pm, which was not a terribly busy time obviously and perfect for a couple of tired, anti-social travelers. We ordered the highly anticipated fish & chips, as well as their chicken and bacon salad and tomato bisque soup, and every single one of these was absolutely delicious. Faith in English cuisine in serious danger of being(semi) restored! Customer service and prices were also okay, though there was slight confusion in the beginning as to how you place an order– no one was coming to our table and we couldn’t find anyone behind the bar either, but eventually things worked out and all in all we were happy with our experience. The only small cloud on the horizon was that one of the few customers there was a rather glum, perhaps slightly disturbed older lady who would not stop staring at us — not sure what warranted this strange prolonged fascination but it felt weird and uncomfortable — not that this is the fault of the establishment, but perhaps a glimpse of the potential mid-afternoon clientele, in case anyone is wondering!

Great pub! I like the fact that I can order a pint, my food, pay and then just relax. I got the lamb shoulder which was really good and just fell off the bone. My buddies got the classic fish and chips which they said was good as well. Overall great place, friendly staff, nice atmosphere.

On a recent work jaunt to Cambridge, this became our mainstay after dinner pub(and sometimes mid-afternoon pub). The draft selection is very nicely chosen, and the local tap(the Broadside) is a well-played pale. If you like ‘em full of a nice hop taste, then I recommend the house brew. Otherwise, they have some pretty good English beers on tap and hard ciders. The staff is a pleasure with which to deal. Fast and accurate, the ladies and gentlemen behind the bar at Mitre Tavern know how to serve them up quickly. Let’s not forget that the taps are traditional pumps, not the air-cartrage shyte we use in the United States. Located in the City Centre, you are able to catch an afternoon pint, wander around and eat elsewhere, and then wander back to close out the night with a few more pints. As with many of the small towns across the English countryside, the pub stops serving at 11:30pm so be aware that your night might end a little earlier than you expect(because of all of the fun that you are having at Mitre Tavern). You can hear your friends and you can enjoy your pints. Overall, you can have a great time.

Comfy, nice place to have affordable drinks in the City Centre, with good draft beer selection. This was a great place to bring a date or a friend for a conversation; even when the pub was quite busy on Friday or Saturday night, I could always hear the person with whom I came. As a former student at Magdalene College, this was one of my go-to places when my friends and I did not want to venture too far from home in the pouring rain and/or snow. I haven’t tried the food here, though.

Caution! The Mitre is now under different ownership and the fish and chips now SUCKS. They try to be posh but utterly fail.

My friends and I were visiting Cambridge and the colleges. After punting and visiting a few colleges, we were tired and hungry. We came across a vew pubs along the street and decided to come here. The environment was inviting and the food selection looked good. We were hooked by the selection of pies advertised on the blackboard hanging on one of the walls. A friend and I decided to share the mini pie platter — 2 pies, a pasty, and a tart with potato wedges for a little under £10. Two of our other friends also got the platter to share too. We also got a pitcher of PIMM’s to split among the 4 of us, another £10. The pitcher was pretty big, so we each got about 2 glasses. PIMM’s plus good food = satisfaction. The food came hot and I really enjoyed the pies. It was my first time eating English pies, so I’m glad I got to try it. Delicious food and drinks for £10, awesome!

Why do people keep saying that British food is bad? Just eat their pies and fish and chips. The fish and chips platter here is fantastic. Of course, the beer selection in UK is superior to that here, but mostly because it is much easier to import European beers to the UK than it is to the US. They have a different special beer on tap every month.

just popped in this pub one day for a late lunch with my girlfriend. the pub itself feels very old school with all the classic pub features. the staff where friendly enough. they had a decent ale and beer selection, and the food was just good standard pub food not bad priced with not bad portions, sadly not place id go back again as nothing really stuck out for me.

A cracking pub near the centre of Cambridge. Serves a very generous sized pub lunch at good prices and has a wide selection of ales on offer. Service is normally quick and done by friendly and happy bar staff. Can get a bit busy in the evening but defiantly worth a look.

Another pub that has some good ales. We actually preferred the look of the selection to what the Baron of Beef was serving next door, which was the pub we had intended to visit. Had a nice pint of Ryedale best That said the pub didn’t hold much interest for me beyond the range of ales. A bit forgettable to be honest. Which was a surprise as there is a bit of history involved. There has been a pub on this site for some time. At one point it was called The Cock and Magpie, which is an infinitely more interesting name than its current appellation

Mitre is a pretty normal pub, but it’s food is far better than average pub food and the portions a fairly big. Good value for money! Leave space for the dessert! Oh and they have two new games machines ;)

Pretty standard pub but the food is better than average for good prices, and the service is quick enough for lunch. There are quite a few tables too so you shouldn’t have trouble getting seated either. The only problem is that the shape of the bar means you can get left behind sometimes. The staff however are really friendly and happy to help
