It was a Saturday night and the pizza cravings had come on in full force but I couldn’t be bothered leaving the flat(I’m so rock and roll), what should we do? Oh yeah, I could call in for some take-away. We usually order from Domino’s but had heard some people rave about Papa John’s lately so we thought we’d give it a try. I’d been seriously underwhelmed when I’d ordered from there a few years back but I thought enough time had passed that it was worth giving it another try. The bargain hunter in me was immediately happy when I discovered if you ordered a pizza costing more than £15 you got it half price. Since i was ordering a large pizza to share there was no problem hitting that mark. In the end I ordered a create your own pizza with peppers and piri piri chicken and a garlic cheese and bacon pizza bread. It was on £12.70 for both, yas! I was also able to pay by PayPal which meant I didn’t even need to get off the couch to find my wallet… Though the pizza came relatively quickly, it wasn’t quite as hot as I would have liked but it was definitely still within acceptable ranges. There garlic cheese and bacon pizza bread was really great and came with pizza sauce and garlic dips. I really liked having the pizza sauce but was quickly reminded of one of the things I hadn’t liked last time I’d ordered from Papa John’s, the garlic sauce is rank. The pizza itself was OK, the toppings were tasty and about the right amount, but there was more cheese than I like. I can’t even imagine what double cheese would be like… The base was also thicker than I’d prefer but not unpleasant. Overall the food was decent but I don’t think it would be my first choice of place to order from in the future.

Ordered pizza from here before and it has been really good. Got it this time and it was 1) Delivered to the wrong location 2) cold 3) sparse on the toppings. Blah. Just all blah.

The Great Pizza Delivery Review! I’ve compared Papa John’s to Domino’s and Pizza Hut — see my other reviews for the complete picture. Papa John’s are the real Armani of the pizza delivery business — the most expensive, the best quality, but at the end of the day they are still just a fast food joint. A standard Hawaiian or Pepperoni pizza is £13.99 for a massive XL that’s more than enough for two, or £11.99 for a medium size. This comes with a free garlic butter dip that’s so addictive you’ll order another pizza from Papa John’s just for dip. The pizza is the least greasy and IMHO also the tastiest amongst the competition with the best base and freshest ingredients. The Edinburgh branch used to also give you free chilli peppers, though I’ve not seen these since I moved to Glasgow — either this is the result of the financial crisis or else they just don’t think Glasgow is cultured enough to enjoy them! The online ordering service will send you a text message to tell you when your pizza is on its way if you give them your mobile number, though you’ll be spammed in future with the occasional«Any Pizza for £9.99 on Monday-Wednesday» offers to tempt you back. Located in Broomhill it’s not quite as central as the competition, so can take a bit longer to deliver, though that’s usually made up by them being less busy.

It’s not Domino’s, Pizza hut or whatever name you care to attach to a pizza shop. Papa John’s is the biggest and best pizza franchise in North America and it’s not unwarranted, they are trying to muscle into the UK market. They do some pretty sweet deals, specially the 2 for 1 lunchtime special. Try the new XL Carnevale is it pretty damned awesome.
