One lazy Saturday, my boyfriend and I found ourselves in the centre of Glasgow and hungry. He suggested that we have a «pub lunch», and his eyes, like those of all males, lit up at the prospect. I wasn’t too keen on the idea(being more of a crêpe a croissant girl myself), but to keep him happy I went along with the idea. We happened to be on Buchanan Street by this point — and conveniently looked to our left to she the Gallery. My boyfriend took charge and headed towards the entrance, with me lagging behind him fairly unenthusiastically! Once inside, we found ourselves in a wooden panelled room stuffed with more tables than you would imagine possible. Surprisingly for a Saturday lunch time — the place was deserted other than a few regulars propping up the bar. I might add that they all looked about 80. I might also add that they made us feel rather unwelcome. We ignored them and half-heartedly picked up a menu and flicked through it — but the damage had already been done. Not only did the food look unexciting and overpriced — we also felt rather uncomfortable. We left without looking back, and haven’t ventured back since.

My visit here was also towards the end of a subcrawl — do young people ever just choose to go here, I wonder. Despite the fact that it is situated smack bam on Buchanan Street I had never really noticed it until that point(perhaps I was too captivated by the shops… ah all those shops!) and I have quite happily ignored it since. It has a rather odd layout as if as many tables and chairs have been squashed in as possible and you have fight your way to the bar. It was extremely busy though and had one of the liveliest and most popular karaokes I have ever witnessed so it must be doing something right. Plus we arrived with moustaches drawn all over our faces courtesy of the subcrawl and noone batted an eyelid so I reckon they deserve some extra credit for putting up with all the fellow subcrawlers out there. I would like to try it during the day just to see what kind of atmosphere it has when it’s a little quieter.

I remember not really liking it in here, although it was very near the end of our subcrawl and my judgement, along with my walking and talking, was slightly skewed. The Gallery is a small, overcrowded pub, full of golfers on the piss and guffawing like buffoons. It had a pretty bad layout and I found it quite awkward to get to the bar. Although, by this stage, even the most simple thinga had become a bit awkward. The toilets were ok, but in general the pub was too expensive for what it is. There was also a small karaōke area with people crammed into a wee corner. It just didn’t work.
