Tensed with binoculars and staring out into the briny murk of the… um…Mersey stands a man whose manliness would evaporate any testosterone you thought you owned and fling it into the sun if it weren’t for the fact he’s now a statue. Of course, that scenario is only if you’re a man. If you’re a woman his manliness is probably already making you undress yourself. Captain Frederic John Walker(or Johnnie Walker to his mates for obvious reasons) was a World War II Navy commander who took out more U-boats during the Battle of the Atlantic than any other, British or Allied. Seriously, this man took out Nazis like most people can take out a whole sheet of bubble wrap. This statue of him, unveiled by Prince Philip in 1998, is a fitting tribute to the sea-based killing machine. Interestingly, the association that campaigned for it is now run by Walker’s grandson who, ironically, is a submariner. Those family reunions must be awkward.
