I love dim sum. But not the one at Confucius. Maybe I’ve been spoilt by the top dim sum in central London, like at Pearl Liang or Yauatcha. Prices here are also not cheap, considering its in a suburb of London and not even that convenient to Wimbledon town centre. Congee was the standout dish. Cheung fun was very disappointing. Everything else was standard dim sum, the likes which you can find in Chinatown easily. For cheaper. Maybe their a la carte dinner menu is better than their dim sum

Great place, dim sum veteran here and outside of the usual china town selection this is a great little place in the area. Humble décor but the food is the all important and I’m regularly happy on each visit.

This is a really underrated gem of a restaurant. A great place to get dim sums on a Sunday. Never seems to be that busy, which means getting a table without a reservation isn’t an issue, but that’s a shame because the food really deserves a wider audience. We’ve been a few times on Sunday for lunch and the dim sums have always impressed us. Great value for money too. Definitely worth trying out.

Lived in Wimbledon 9 years and never been here before. WHAT A WASTE !! I’m not the biggest fan of Chinese food in the world, I certainly don’t go in for the odd takeaway, but I have been partial in the past to restaurant Chinese food. The food here is nice and the service fine. We went early one Tuesday evening, the place was deserted, but only because of the time. The menu is reasonably extensive. We plumped for a shared Veggie Platter to start. Bite sized crispy things(Spicy samosa, deep fried seaweed, diced bean curd with garlic & chili salt deep fried courgette) and a little sweet chili dip. Very acceptable. Followed that with Stir fried Scallops & Broccoli, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Stir fried water chestnut & celery and egg fried rice. Not posh nosh by any stretch, but left very sated and will go back before another 9 years have passed.

I wish they had the fish congee on saturdays. I think I’d be happy to go there on a Sunday and just have fish congee. I’d like to plea to have that regularly on their all day menu. Other than that, dim sum is really good. Your standard run of the mill — better than Chinatown place. I really like this beancurd wrapped shrimp thing. Dunno what it’s called but it’s the best thing on their dim sum menu and you don’t see it very common in other places. It is a bit of a walk from the station but if you’re not up for walking, hop on the bus and get off the polka theatre stop — it’s right across the street.

Was having a dad day with my middle daughter last Saturday & when asked what she’d like for lunch, she answered«Dim Sum.» Looks like she has the same cravings as her old man! We were in Wimbledon with my sis’ & I remembered seeing this place on Unilocal so off we went. The restaurant looks like a bar as you walk in dark purple walls & a huge silver bar area to your left. On the right hand side it looks more like a Chinese restaurant, big fish tanks with koi & a water feature to keep the kids amused. You order Dim Sum off a menu where you tick off the items you want. A small menu accompanies this in English so you know what you are ordering — if not familiar with dim sum. We had beef hor fun, which lacked wok hei(heat from the wok) but was ok. Custard buns & char siu pastries for the little one, both were good. Chickens feet in black bean & chilli, char siu cheung fun, har gau, meat croquettes, steamed beef balls & steamed meat dumplings, we enjoyed all the dishes & were suitably stuffed! I’m going to give Confucius 3.5 stars for their Dim Sum(can’t comment in their dinner menu), there were no stand out dishes for me but were all freshly made. The waiter took the order from the table next to us first which was slightly annoying. What I do admire is, a Chinese restaurant that is off the beaten track serving authentic Chinese food. If I’m in the area again I’ll definitely visit again.

Very good Chinese, a little off the beaten track — but certainly worth the extra few minutes walk.

My friend, David, takes his family out to dinner every Sunday night in Wimbledon. And where do they go? To Confucius, a Cantonese restaurant on Broadway. The outside of the restaurant is nondescript; but, stepping inside, you get the feel of something special happening. The various aromas of food cooking definitely sets a good mood. And, the black marble floors, candlelit tables, and soft lighting create a comfortable and romantic setting. David orders Crispy Aromatic Duck to start, which comes with 6 thin pancakes, thin cut celery and cucumber, and a sweet and spicy plum sauce that had some kick to it. Wrapping the duck, celery, and cucumber in the pancake and applying the plum sauce creates an explosive flavor sensation that makes all thoughts and feelings of jet-lag fade into oblivion. What is jet-lag in the midst of this kind of food? Who could possibly feel fatigue eating duck like this? Ahhh, People, I want to go back and eat the duck, duck that is so light, so crispy with crunchy texture, tender beyond belief, and full of fresh, hearty flavor. The next dish is Fresh Lobster Cooked with Onion and Ginger and laid over Egg Noodles Cooked in a Garlic, Black Bean Sauce. People, get out of here!!! I mean, seriously, shoot me down and stomp on my helpless body. The lobster meat is seared on the outside in a way that keeps the juices in. Biting though the meat the juices come squirting out and the tender meat melts away in your mouth — it’s almost orgasmic… The egg noodles are good, too. The Sliced Beef in Black Bean Sauce and Green Peppers and Chinese Broccoli in Oyster Sauce are excellent as well. The family that owns Confucius are from Hong Kong and don’t speak with as strong a British accent as one would expect. They all work hard and are fully engaged in running the restaurant. It’s almost like being in a family restaurant in Chinatown in Los Angeles. The next time I’m in Wimbledon, I’m going to Confucius. I wish I could take you all with me…

Not too much to say about this place that hasn’t actually been covered already. I came here with Cindy, on Yee Gan’s recommendation. I love me some chinese food, and whilst I found a couple of things I’d have liked to be on the menu to, well, not be, I also found a lot that I did like. The choice was fair enough, and the pricing pretty good. I had a bit of food envy whilst waiting for my choice — looking at the selections of those on neighbouring tables had me panicing that maybe I’d picked the wrong thing, because it all looked so good. Especially the duck. Mm. Duckkkkkk. However, prawn dumplings and sweet ‘n sour chicken was absolutely great. Not sure I’d necessarily take someone to Wimbledon purely to go here — but if we’re doing something else in the area, or someone else has requested it, then it’s a definite yes.

My sister and I are regulars at Confucius for dim sum at lunchtime every Sunday after church. It’s a pleasant walk from Wimbledon Broadway, located at the very end just before the road curves round to South Wimbledon station. The dim sum menu has only restarted in the last year and a half when they got in a new chef. The service is always prompt and courteous. Kids will be fascinated by the large fish tank and water wheel feature. The preponderence of Chinese clientele tells its own story — we are very fussy when it comes to food. The food is of good quality, quantity and ingredients — large prawns in har gau and cheong fun, crispy pastry for the char siew sow and lovely roasted meats. The food isn’t greasy, a common problem for lower quality dim sum places. The pastry skins are all thin for the steamed dishes and crispy for the fried dishes. They lose a star for a slightly small menu with some old favourites missing like siu loong bow and shark fin dumpling. Also, they used to serve suckling pig and it’s still on the menu but no longer available. They also do an evening menu but I can’t really comment on that. It’s a great place for dim sum and what they do have on the menu is first class.

Taking my seat at a cosy table in the large interior of Confucius, Wimbledon, I chuckled to myself. «Man with one chopstick go hungry», the so-called Confucius saying, would definitely not apply to me today. The menu is refreshingly designed, and simply not as confusing as some Chinese menus I have seen before as names and relevant descriptions are clearly visible. I recommend the Chef’s special. While I would not have chosen this option if I was at a canine restaurant down a dodgy alleyway in Beijing, it’s perfectly fine at Confucius in Wimbledon: crispy, aromatic duck, har lok, beef with ginger and spiced onion and the intriguingly named stone-grilled curried chicken.
