When I used to work in the area I’d pop in on a regular basis to gaze longingly at some of the collections. I don’t know if CC is a collective, but it certainly showcases the work of, at least, a handful of artists with quite varied styles. –flower motifs, children-centric images, saucy Union Jack themed undergarments, animals, fruit and veg, birthdays and weddings, too. You name it, CC will either have it or could create it for you. I’m particularly fond of the ‘bargain mug baskets’ filled with slightly marred(usually undetectable) and/or one-off product tucked under the counter at the till. Smaller cups are 6 quid and standard sized cups are 8 quid. A mug from one of the current collections will run you around twenty pounds. I have never inquired how much a set would run one, but I’d imagine it isn’t cheap. Note: small shop with an informal vibe. One feels as if one is walking into a stranger’s living room. **Cosmo China is solely a china shop and not a home décor shop.

Ivor the Engine, Noggin the Nog, Bagpuss, the Clangers, Basil Brush. The artistic genius was Peter Firmin, and his daughters are the creative force behind Cosmo China. They have a range of illustrators and artists creating designs on china that have in common a freshness and humour that will put a smile on your face. They paint on porcelain, which means that the objects are all usable, and there is a range of wide range of designs available. Moreover, they accept commissions and personalisation that they turn round in a very short time for remarkably low cost. Whether you are looking for a special mug for a colleague or a plate to commemorate an event, or the gift-you-don’t-know-quite-what-it-is-yet, Cosmo must be on your visit list.

This little shop hidden in a quiet square near Russell Square is full of hand painted fine bone china teapots, mugs, plates and bowls. Each piece is painted by one of the resident artists who can often be seen working away at the back of the shop. There are designs to suit all tastes and should there be something in particular that you are looking for, you can always commission a piece to be made or add a personalized message onto an existing design. This is the ideal place to pick up a special gift for someone or buy a beautiful work of art for your own pleasure.
