Interesting idea, I guess. Good beer, good roof garden. I’m not particularly fond of the prices mind you pint prices for a 2⁄3 pint glass. Too dear for me to ever become a regular. Will be by from time to time though.

Why isn’t this in east London? Or at the very least, Soho? Dach and Sons is way too hip to be in Hampstead, but there it is. We ventured today for a calorie fest of epic proportions. Truffle mac and cheese, beef sliders, fried pickles and bone marrow popcorn. The truffle mac and cheese was fabulous. The sliders were good but not mindblowing, they sound better than they taste. The popcorn was fine, just had some beefy tasting powder sprinkled over the top. We weren’t such a huge fan of the pickles, too thickly cut on the pickle-side. All in all, I loved this place and I want to go back to try the rest of the menu. And dessert. Oh yes. My only request: can they please get peanut butter milkshakes… what kind of American diner doesn’t have that?

I was excited to try Dach & Sons because it’s not easy to find an American style beef hot dog here in London, but I was pretty disappointed. The hot dog was overcooked, had not much flavour, and was basically a chore to finish. Even the bread not much better, I couldn’t bring myself to finish the bit left at the end with no hot dog. The chips were not much better. The place itself seemed quite cool with lots of NY décor but is a bit small. The staff was friendly and the service was good. Maybe I’d have liked it better if I’d had this burger other people are mentioning or the mac ‘n’ cheese, but if you are going for the hot dog, DON’T.

I journeyed up to this place to have a beer. Upon arrival, the waitress promptly informed me that ‘they are a restaurant’, and that if I wanted to just have a beer I would need to wait until one of their two — TWO — seats at the bar was available before I could get served a beer. Fair enough to be a restaurant that doesn’t cater to someone who just wants a drink, but the waitress was a bit snobby. She could have easily talked me into getting food if she had taken a better tack. Well, I didn’t feel like standing around waiting for a beer from a none too impressive draft lineup(I didn’t take the time to scan the bottle selection, so can’t comment there). I left, and I don’t have any immediate plans to return. I guess if you want to have overpriced hot dogs and sliders while sipping on beginner craft beer this might be your spot; however, my spot it is not.

You know how some places tell you lies like that their mac & cheese has truffle oil in it but you think it could possibly just be olive oil because they’re cheap bastards? Well I’m happy to say that the truffled mac & cheese is truffly and even holds its own after dashed with tabasco. Zing! Really great burger for the area, the cheese is also what makes it. I believe I saw something about how they source their meat from the Hampstead Butcher around the corner and down the hill from the tube, horray for keeping it local! Stream of consciousness moment: they do deep fried pickles, I like the lighting, they had a puppy upstairs once and I wanted to take it home or else have someone tell me it would always be there, there’s a Purl upstais which does an amazing sazerac among other experimental cocktails, roofdeck, chili dog, NY inspired bathroom.

A great new addition to Hampstead. Dach & Sons is a hot dog and burger joint with a nice bonus touch of a good whisky selection as well. The meats are all fresh from the Hampstead Butcher down the hill and they claim they fresh make the burgers and dogs from scratch every day. The burger is boiled then seared, so it’s by default somewhat rare, which is a delicious alternative to most British burgers that are totally overcooked. Wash it down with one of their house boilermakers and you have the makings of a great night, not to mention a nightcap afterwards at Purl upstairs.
