This place is constantly great — food, service, atmosphere, wine — great local neighborhood spot! The steak tartare is one of the best I have ever had — including those I’ve eaten in Paris!

I just had the calamari risotto and its one of the best, the ambience is cosy and nice
Spacious and will have another visit to try the breakfast

One of my absolute favourites. Whenever we have visitors I like to bring them to Gazette for brunch — it’s always a winner. I found it hard to go past the Full French the first few times I visited as it is such a great breakfast, but I’ve since also tried the Gazettoise crêpe and a few of the egg dishes. Everything is always good, including the service. Have also been for lunch and loved that too. Unfortunately down this end of Battersea we’re a bit light on for good brunch spots, so Gazette is a lifesaver.

Don’t know who is writing these reviews or if the chef has changed but we had a very different experience.
I ordered mussels and a pint of beer. The mussels were generous but no bread came with the order. The chips were grossly over salted and not nearly as good as we had at Brady’s pub the night before. I received a half pint of beer but was charged for a full pint. To be fair, they took it off when I complained. The spinach we also ordered was so salty that no one could eat it. The service was very slow.
The mussels caught up with me during the night and the next day on my flight to California. Won’t go into details but the flight crew was very happy to see me exit the plane.
We had just returned to London from a couple of weeks in France so very used to what good French food and service is like.

A few months ago I moved into the local area and this was one of the first places that I stumbled across on inspecting the surroundings of my new home, as it is 5 mins walk away. It had, «take the parents» written all over it! Walking inside we discovered a lovely French themed café/​restaurant/​snack bar. It looked very cozy and glancing at the menu it seemed reasonably priced.
Sure enough the time came for them to visit and the table was booked. (I called at 6:45pm Friday night and said, «I’ll be there in 10 minutes. Job done.
We were seated on the upper level and as there were 6 of us we had a good-​sized table with a great view of the rest of the restaurant. Perfect for spying on the dishes coming from the kitchen to help us make our minds up what to have. I did need some help with this as the menu was rather small option wise for an evening meal and nothing really jumped out at me.
We were given a couple of baskets of bread to get us going. Served with Brittany Salted butter… MMMmmm I was in love! I was so happy that I now have this butter in my life and that it was available to buy in Waitrose. I’ll never be skinny again! :-)
Oysters: never really had oyster before so was definitely keen for these. We had 2 each to start and although they were cheap (£1each), a lot of fun and were presented beautifully. I wont be having them again! They taste like salty mushrooms and I hate mushrooms.
Main course: I had chosen Pigeon, which I’ve never had before, reasons being:
1 — nothing else really jumped out at me on the menu other than steak and as I was in the mood for being adventurous I did not want to give in and order that.
2 — Because I hate them and I thought it would give me great pleasure in a Man vs. Beast kind of way.
3 — I knew my girlfriend likes it so worst come to worst I could swap for her steak.
It came in what I can describe as a watery gravy type substance, which looked weird, and some roasted veg. I knew straight away it was not going to fill me up as I have a big appetite. Nonetheless it was quite tasty and I polished it off, dunking the rest of the bread in the sauce, which I had come to enjoy more, and more with every mouthful.
Reports back from the rest of the table were good the steak was great perfectly cooked and the Monkfish that was ordered got the thumbs up too. Phew, the family were happy and my dad was extremely happy with the extensive wine list that was 3x the size of the food menu.
Service was first class and we tipped generously. As we were leaving we heard another table complain about the pigeon maybe it was the gravy? We also saw a guy with a trolley literally full to the brim of cheese. We stood and awe of the great selection and having seen us watch as the waiter served it to him pricing it by the gram as he went. He gave us double thumbs up with the biggest smile on his face.
Next time I know what to have!

Wow my boyfriend and I were really impressed by this little hidden treasure last night… I am French and it is probably one of the best French restaurants I have been to in London! The food is really French, the music is French, the staff is French too. We had ‘le fois gras’ terrine which was proper fois gras, like the one you eat in the south west of France. We also tried one of their special dinner themes, a beef taster for two with four different types of beef: ‘tartare’ which is raw with amazing sauce and spices, ‘cote de boeuf’, as well as what I think was close to ‘onglet’ with shallots and finally ‘chateaubriand’ with the best chips ever! We finished with a wonderful ‘plateau de fromages’ which reminded us of those you find in ‘Relais & Chateaux’… It was just an amazing dinner. And the staff looked after us really well. I would highly recommend it! P. s. if you’re British and you like your crackers with cheese, take them with you as they only serve wonderful French baguette! ;-)

I had the grand-​mere soup which was more like split pea soup and quite heavy. I then had the skirt steak which I am familiar with and thought it would be thin, and it was not. it was stringy and thicker than the porterhouse. The frittes were the most amazing fries or chips I’ve had since moving to the UK. They were the most salty and delicious frittes I’ve had in a very long time. Someone in our group had the appetizer size mussels and it looked like a big portion, though most of it is shell. The porterhouse portion was a bit on the thin side but very juicy and tasty. 3 of us had the Caesar salad and it was enormous, it looked huge partly because of the glass bowl that it was served in and included a cooked egg on top with a slice of bread.
Over all, a good place, I would like to go in summer to spend time on the patio. it looked gorgeous and in need of my presence with a nice cold beverage in hand. ahhhhh

Gazette has to be one of the most charming restaurants south of the Thames. The ambiance is perfect for a quiet meal as a couple or a more lively affair with family and friends. Little touches like tea towels for napkins and mis-​matched serving plates give the restaurant a rustic French appeal. In the evening tiny candles are lit throughout bar and dining rooms, making it feel cozy and romantic.
The menu is made to look like an old newspaper (hence the name) and there is no shortage of options. They have a large wine list, delicious wines by the glass, a large selection of interesting beers (including some Belgian favorites) and a «cocktail of the day». My husband usually orders the steak frites or the risotto — he loves both. I often order the tomato tart which is served over fresh arugula and is the perfect size given that we always order a side of frites to share (they are served in an old wooden handle saucepan– so cute). Even the bread and cone-​shaped butter served before the meal is delicious.
Skip the cheese platter if you’re not used to strong creamy cheese. I love blue cheeses but some of theirs are too pungent for me. Also be careful with dessert as some options are large and I think designed to be shared. My favorite are the Madeline cakes served with honey. Perfect for two (or one with a big sweet tooth).
My favorite part of this restaurant, though, is the service. Yes they are French and yes they take their time — but to me that just adds to the appeal. This is the type of place where you want a long, drawn out delicious meal. They don’t rush you out the door like so many restaurants in London.

My family and I are from California and rented a place walking distance from gazette! And we have gone twice in the two weeks we have been here and have always left full an completely satisfied with our meals!
The ambiance is great, sitting outside when the sun starts to go down is amazing :) the food is awesome we love the bread and butter as well! I think we have tried just about everything! Oysters are great and so is the chicken an the desserts are fantastic
My dad likes to call this place his favorite restaurant!
We always had a good time and will definitely miss this when we head back to America … Please go and you walk along the Thames and it’s pretty (when the tide is high)!

Gazette is as close as you can to France in London! Everything seemed authentically French — the décor, the staff, and the food (of course).
My friend recommended this place to eat and so I took a friend to come try it out with me. There are 2 rstaurants in London. The one we went to was in Battersea. It’s location was a bit of a walk away from Clapham Junction station and hidden on some back roads underneath a residential flat. But don’t let that put you off! We needn’t book a table but just in case, feel free to!
The evening started off very quiet but it soon picked up. The lights were dim and the atmosphere had quite a romantic and intimate feel to it. The staff provided a friendly service, however, tended to display their unprofessional banter on the restaurant floor, which ruined the atmosphere a little. Moving on, I must admit that I struggled with the menu as it was mostly in French but I was sure that whatever I chose it would be good (Tip: have your smart phone at hand to Google search everything you haven’t heard of)! I recommended the lamb shoulder to share as it was fall-​off-​the-​bone delicious.
…Then I couldn’t believe my eyes! Danni Minogue walked in with her family and sat a few yards away from me! She seemed to have enjoyed her night. So, if it was good enough for her, it sure was good enough for me! =D

I absolutely love this place! Never had a dinner there, but we popped in for brunch, coffee tea couple of times and all was fantastic– just look at the full french breakfast picture!:) Has a very french feel to it– I actually feel like I am away from England. Very relaxed and warm atmosphere. Decently priced too!

Gazette is one of my local restaurants and I was surprised that no-​one on Unilocal has reviewed it yet! It’s a gem of a place, hidden away off the (rather nasty and quite smelly) York Road on the Battersea /​Wandsworth border.
Nestled between riverside apartments the restaurant offers traditional French cuisine in a relaxed and informal setting. It markets itself as a café, bar, brassiere and private room. To be fair, it’s a restaurant on the top floor and a nice bar on the lower level (perfect for reading the paper and relaxing). The private room isn’t exactly massive, and has a glass partition, so it’s not exactly ‘private’ per se, just slightly removed from the other diners. My partner had his 40^th
here and it was a great success. The menu was tailor made, with all his favourite things: truffles, foie gras, confit of duck etc.
I ate here a couple of weeks ago with my mum, her friend and my other half. Service was good, if a little slow at times. The place is very very French so don’t expect to be hurried with your meal — this is about relaxing and taking your time. Similarly, the service, timing and pacing of your meal will reflect this.
The wine list is MASSIVE, and I do mean massive. However, if the owner is about (Walter) he will be more than happy to guide you to a suitable choice. Prices aren’t cheap, but the selection is superb.
The menu changes daily and has been designed to appear like a newspaper front page. I had snails to start, and then salmon with sweet potato for main. The snails were delicious, swimming in melted butter (I daren’t even begin to think about how many calories were in it), they also had a deliciously earthy taste. Yum. The salmon was cooked well, and the sweet potato was fine, if well, a little watery. My fellow diners had similarly hit and misses with their choices, a mustard and tomato tart was disappointing, a veal main course was served luke warm and had to be sent back (not a problem, and it was dealt with quickly and didn’t impact on our enjoyment one bit), foie gras starter for my other half was delicious with red onion jam.
Just another note about the way the food is served. Everything is quite ‘rustic’ so don’t be surprised if your food comes served in a large pot /​pan /​dish. It’s a cute gimmick, but not essential. Although must be a nightmare for the poor waiting staff. Speaking of the waiting staff 100% of them are French and have varying levels of English. So do try and be patient or ask another server. I find it adds to the whole French experience!
Anyhoo, Gazette is well worth a look if you’re in the area. it’s also a great place to go with friends for a group birthday /​event as long as you’re not wanting to hit the local nightclubs after (they’re aren’t any). The place can get a little rowdy with the right crowd there and also for big sporting events (especially involving the French) you’ll find a large ex-​pat community.

We were out for a stroll in Clapham and hungry. We actually ended up walking in the back entrance past a car yard. We came across the low key entrance to this wandsworth eatery through a break in the buildings.
The décor inside was french chic with vintage furniture, romantically lit and bustling. The maitrede met us at the door and was as charming as he was authentically french, so good start we thought.
This was just the beginning as the staff were friendly, delightful, and very attentive from the start. A jug of table water comes as standard and we were handed a menu that is obviously printed daily.
Now being French food it is somewhat rich, but I can definitely recommend the apple & froe gras, and cort de beuf (this is a lovely cut of beef from around the middle of the cow) to share and to finish off with the chocolate soufflé. The soufflé is massive and although I love chocolate I struggled to eat it all, but it is amazing, you might want to consider sharing and getting some vanilla ice cream as well.
On an interesting side note, there were this couple who had two dogs in the restaurant, I know the French love their dogs so I guess it was perfectly acceptable.
I highly recommended Gazette for it food, wine and just good value for money.

Good value French bistro with a ‘local’ atmosphere near the river (Thames) between Wandsworth and Battersea bridges. A large terrace catches the evening sun for a while as the main room fills up — even on a Monday night — signifying a loyal crowd of French and other nationalities from the surrounding anonymous blocks that have sprung up here in the last ten years.
Good fresh bread, a lovely creamy calamari risotto and a tasty chicken and pea casserole lacked only lots of coarse ground black pepper (stangely never forthcoming). A well-​made chocolate soufflé put the finishing touch on a spur-​of-​the-​moment supper that we’ll happily repeat whenever the mood turns French.
