I live just up the road from the King’s Head but I’ve never crossed the threshold due to my reluctance to pay a membership free to have a drink given the amount of options on my doorstep. Having now ventured inside as the guest of a member I have to say that I’m glad I saved my money. While it is a pretty cool experience walking into what looks like a really run down local put to be greeted with an opulent interior full of funky stuffed animals. It would probably be the stuff of PETA’s nightmares! Drinks were a little bit more expensive than normal bar prices although the measures of the spirits were VERY generous. After a couple of drinks and a bit of a wander around I was ready to go. I can see the appeal to some people who want a little bit of status but it’s not for me. Definitely worth checking out if you can though

Absolutely beautiful. Went here for the first time last week as part of a Secret Theatre show. Struggled to find it at first, from the outside it looks like a run-down pub, with boarded up windows, falling apart sign, the works! But as soon as you enter you’re greeted by four floors of beautifully decorated rooms. There’s a full-bar, with really friendly bar-staff; they even saved my drinks for me for an hour when I got dragged away by an actor. Definitely recommend for a night out, or a speak-easy vibe. Unfortunately you have to be a member to gain entrance, or go as someones plus one, but really worth it if you’re the kind of person that 250 quid’s small change. Drinks are normal London prices, and the card limit starts at a tenner, but definitely worth checking out; great vibe, great music and beautifully decorated!

The King’s Head on Kingsland Road is a members’ club with an exterior which provides a useful façade. From the outside, it’s a dilapidated old Irish Pub — somewhere that you might think is earmarked to be torn down and have some identikit ‘luxury’ apartments built in its place. However, if you’re lucky enough to get inside, you will realise that the King’s Head is very much here to stay. The inside of the building is full of chic people and taxidermied animals. With ornate brass ceilings and patterned wallpaper, the interiors are intentionally surprising, and apparently the food there is excellent, too. When I went here in February 2013, it didn’t even have a website — everyone just happened to know someone who was already a member. Now, the club is accepting members applications, and membership costs £250 per year. Personally, I can think of other things I’d rather spend £250 on! But for some people that kind of cash is small change, so if you can afford it then go for it — it’s far cooler than Shoreditch House.
