Located next to God’s Own Junkyard and nearly opposite Wildcard Brewery, Mother’s Ruin is the ideal place to spend a lazy weekend afternoon sipping gin cocktails and taste-testing gin liqueurs before buying a bottle to take home for yourself(their sloe gin lasted me through an entire summer — just one whiff conjures memories of balmy evenings spent with the windows flung wide open). I have my favorite order, the Mother’s Royale(your choice of gin liqueur topped with prosecco — I usually opt for the damson, cassis or sloe gin) and a sausage roll, which is served piping hot. There are plenty of seats inside, but when the weather’s nice, the outdoor seating area is the perfect place to mingle with friends.

If Mother’s Ruin was closer, it would be my ruin. Until about six months ago, this was a tiny stall in East London, but now they have moved into their own space that they share with a small bakery. And it is glorious. To begin with, Mother’s Ruin is a bespoke alcohol maker. They create items like raspberry vodka, sloe gin, or bitter orange rum(that’s made with Seville Oranges that only ripen for about a month every year so she needs to work quickly.) They’ve won great taste stars, they are epic. Their spot is beautiful. Very small, white walls with epic art in frames covering them, nice tables with christmas lights, it’s comfortable and a nice spot to drink. And drink you do! They have an EPIC menu of gin, three pages of gin cocktails you can make, wether it’s cocktails or gin and tonics. If you like gin, and you are in the area, you need to be here. The only thing they need to do is change their labels. The bottles are colourful and pretty but they look more like olive oil bottles than spirits. It’s a small issue but with the with label, these could go very very far. And I hope they do, because they’re wonderful. A space absolutely worth checking out.
