Agreed with what said in previous reviews: the food is just bad. I ordered a burger, waiter asked me how I would have liked it to be cooked: I said medium. What I got: completely raw meat. Inedible. Just raw. Incredible. So I kindly asked to have it a little more cooked, because this was just raw. And I finally got a cooked burger, still not good though, because the quality of the meat was just too low. Ah also, a thing that happens quite often in the UK: the table I got seated at was just filthy. And no one cared about cleaning it. I mean there were literally pieces of other people’s food on it. Onions, meat, break, salt, pepper. All over the table. Yuck. Clean up! Anyway, the cooks just quickly cooked the burger without paying to much attention. And it’s a shame because there were not 3 tables occupied at that time, they had all the time to make something at least decent. But they didn’t. Just poorly executed. Should they care more about what they send out to the dining room, then I am sure they can improve a lot the quality of their food. But for now: jut go there to drink a beer. Avoid the food.

Atmosphere is family friendly/nice pub to catch up with friends. Food is good but bare in mind that they don’t do traditional pub food here(apart from Haddock & Chips). Good selection on draft beer.

I was in serious need of a good Sunday roast and this place delivered. Pork(still on the bone) with perfect crackling and yummy accompaniments. The service was quick, prices good and lovely wine. Definitely up for going back again. Ps Yorkies were amazing. They didn’t come with my pork but my friend got the beef and the Yorkie was huge and cooked perfectly!

This is a proper pub towards the front at least! It looks good and I particularly liked the pewter tankards hung up around the walls and the beer clips present. The restaurant bit at the back is the larger section though. Golden Hen and Sussex Best to choose from. I enjoyed a decent pint of the latter.

I’ve lived in Putney for two years now — and I was kicking myself when I left for not having found this place earlier! The pub has two main areas — a more relaxed area for drinking and eating at the front, and a spacious dining room at the back, which is where we ate. We went for Sunday lunch and had the full three courses — all of which were excellent. The wood pigeon wellington was nice and pink in the middle, and the crispy pig cheeks had an interesting twist in the form of a sweet and sour base. To follow, we had the obligatory Sunday roast — one beef, and one pork. Both were excellent. The pork was beautifully cooked, and the beef was a good shade of pink and came with a big Yorkshire pudding, as well as all the usual veg and potatoes. We couldn’t skip dessert and ended up going with the white chocolate and ginger cheesecake — a perfect ending! The wine we had was excellent as well — they have a good selection. All of that came in at under £80, and the service was friendly, quick, and gave us plenty of time to digest… We’re already planning our next trip!

This place and my experiences here are really best reviewed in two reviews, one for the pub and one for the restaurant — alas Unilocal wont let me add two, so the experience which has coloured my memory takes precedence. The pub is superb — five stars! Excellent selection of drinks, great atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff. They even had my favorite Cornish ale, on tap… something I have never seen outside of Devon, although when the cask was gone, it is gone and another interesting ale takes its place. The restaurant is not-superb. I had been looking forward to trying it, since the pub is so good. The meal didn’t start off bad, the service was good and friendly. The menu is a little weird, ranging from veal brains to fish and chips but oddly not very varied and largely fish based. We ordered rib-eyes, for £21 — pricey, so I was expecting them to be good — we had two done medium-rare and two medium. They all arrived rare, and mine was a poor and fatty cut, even for a rib-eye. Having read other reviews from last year I am glad I didn’t send them back though, better rare than cremated. By the end I did not feel good, and after looking at the lackluster desert menu with a build-your-own cheeseboard(can’t you do it?) we passed. Sorry chef, if you can’t cook a steak… then I wont be trying your veal brains. Very disappointing!

Came here to meet friends who live close by, and they did not steer us wrong. Starter — wild mushroom on brioche — was exquisite, though quite small(I could have wolfed down another two!). Dessert, a chocolate torte with rhubarb sorbet, was better than I expected. Very chocolatey, but in a dark, brownie-in-pie-crust kind of way, rather than the dense flourless chocolate cake trend I’m not a fan of. Main was lobster tagliatelle, which was good, but not outstanding like the others courses Service was quite attentive, and the atmosphere is lovely. We got there before 8 on a Saturday night, and it was a very pleasant talking atmosphere. As the evening wore on, it got louder, with more things having to be repeated, but still not the can’t-hear-yourself-think level. Would definitely go back! I’d like to try their fish and chips. Also, it’s almost next door to the Beer Boutique, so you can stock up for home as well!

Still my favourite gastropub in Putney. I had their fish and chips the other night and it’s definitely one of the best I’ve ever had. Scotch egg — never disappoints!

When people criticize English food they definitely cannot be speaking of this place. Not only is it charming inside it is delicious as well. The freshly baked bread was amazing and the croquettes we ordered we excellent as well. The burger I ordered was really really good too! If you find yourself in East Putney it’s a good spot to grab dinner.

I’ve had a very different experience from some of the reviewers here but maybe I’ve just been lucky. The staff have always been friendly, the food is delicious(especially the burgers) and it’s great for lounging around reading the paper and playing cards, which is what I tend to do in the pub. It is definitely on the pricey side though.

All in all a good pub. It lacks the situation of most of Putney’s more famous pubs i.e. it’s not on the river but it manages to walk that fine line between being a place for fine, very good food without that impinging on the drinking aspect that is, of course, important for any pub. Food Always a good menu very well cooked and presented Drink Usually a good selection on draft with a great wine list. Let down by high prices but this is sadly the norm for South West London. Atmosphere Good and usually always busy. Upmarket boozer that thankfully never has the music on too loud. I like it a lot and there is a great pub quiz on Sundays.

A great little local pub with fun and attentive staff. Inside it’s a pretty traditional pub with a restaurant area in the back. I’ve only ever ordered the mezze platter and chips from the food menu but they both came out well presented and über good. However, I believe the POW considers its panko-dipped scotch eggs to be their best dish. They do look lovely but it concerns me that they sit on the bar all day in a pub with no air conditioning. My tummy just won’t allow me to do it! Scotch eggs aside, I do really like this pub. The beer garden out front is always full but not over crowded. Last year it had a tiki bar where they only sold rum based drinks… I’m quite glad that it’s gone this year as it felt out of place. Get here before the crowd, plant your butt outside, get a carafe of wine and enjoy the atmosphere. Order the mezze platter to keep the buzz alive without going overboard.

was a rec from a friend who lived in the neighborhood who tauted«has same head chef as a pub in chelsea that earned a michelin star». there is a lovely dining area in the back though. it is unassuming when you walk straight into the pub. i had the onion tart, which was more sliced onions with st. marcellin cheese, pine nuts on filo. my friend’s lamb looked lovely. my other friend got the sea bass with fried oysters. i should have go that. dessert was lovely i had the elderflower pear with lychee sorbet. service was a bit me. had to flag down quite a bit.

I have to say the other review here resonates with me very much. Ok inside the environment is nice enough, whilst a little outside space gives somewhere to sit on those warmer days. The food is absolutely average at best, which if it were being sold at average prices wouldn’t be so bad, however the price is extremely toppy, the steak as I recall was well over 20+ pounds fine in a restaurant but not here. This continues with the drinks, cocktails were served by a self assured gent, in glasses laughably proportioned. Again ok if the price matches the pomp, but at the PoW sadly not. I fear rather like the present PoW Charles it may be best to pass him over in preference for the younger less tired outfit.

I’ve lived in Putney for 3 years and the PoW should be our local as its the closest pub to us. We often land up there out of convenience and lack of inspiration but each time I go I kick myself for being stupid. This joint is expensive, the staff are ALWAYSRUDE, snarky, lazy and look to be sucking lemons. Over the years there have been a couple of bartenders that were friendly and pleasant but they last only a very short time and often speak of appauling management(and worse). It seems management encourage bitter staff. I went last night as our intended pub was opening late and I swear it will be the last time I ever visit this horrible place. I hate it with a passion. We had one drink(a beer and a cider £8.40) served by a seriously rude and uninterested bar waitress into warm glasses. We left as soon as possible and I will never look back. Go to the Fox(5 pounds for a round), the Coat and Badge or the Jolly Gardener. Anywhere but here.

I’ve just eaten a hot, pork sandwich in The Prince of Wales pub in Putney. I was lured in to the pub after an exhausting shopping trip by a chalked sign outside. I ordered said sandwich and received a tiny brown roll that contained some fatty pork in the middle. I could taste some mustard but that was about all. The ‘sandwich’ along with a mineral water cost me £8. Was it worth it — no it wasn’t! Absolute rip-off. If I hadn’t been so hungry I would have sent it back. I did complain and they said they would talk to the chef — stop talking and get sacking. Don’t bother with this place.

At least we had a good laugh — and it might have just been an off night for the chef. That’s about the best I can say about the Prince of Wales — where the whole evening became more like a night at Fawlty Towers. I arrived a bit late as it was miles away from work — the others had already ordered, so I asked for some bread to keep me going. The waiter, after reacting as if I had asked him to begin kneading some dough from scratch, finally returned with some slices of bread which he had cut into quarters, and generously handed me a tiny square of soda bread. It was fabulous bread, and it would have been even better as a whole slice! The people sitting next to me were sharing a mezze platter which they said wasn’t that brilliant — hummous, pitta bread, olives and a minced lamb kofta thing which was apparently almost raw. They’d then ordered steak and chips. The girl was worried about how rare it would be, given the lamb — she’d tried to ask for it medium but was told it was only cooked one way — medium rare, so it was that or nothing. When the harassed waiter appeared, with furrowed brow and the cares of the world on his shoulders, he flourished only one plate of steak, and another of plaice. «We both ordered steak», she said. The waiter looked as if he was about to slash his own wrists. She gave in and said she’d try the plaice anyway, which came with a rather bizzare pineapple coulis on the side. The guy looked at his steak. Seared on the outside, but otherwise practically still mooing. He tried a corner, and decided it was way too rare. I suggested he ask them to cook it for another couple of minutes… bad idea. About 20 minutes later the plate returned, with the stake absolutely cremated. From blue, to black, in one easy move. At least the chips were stand-out, huge, crispy, soft in the middle. In the end a couple of chips were all I had for dinner too. I’d ordered the only veggie option on the set menu — an open tomato lasagne which didn’t sound that exciting, but there wasn’t any other choice. I sent it back as soon as it arrived… two sheets of pasta floating in lots of water with a couple of bits of tomato and a chunk of unmelted mozzarella stuck on top. I didn’t bother with a dessert — textures of lime and passion fruit aren’t really my sort of thing. Perhaps the set menu didn’t do the kitchen justice as I’ve heard great things about the chef. And if you like really rare meat, you’d love it. Otherwise, stick to the soda bread — if you can get any — and those fabulous chips.

Good beer(haven’t had any problems with it yet), good choice of beer, excellent cocktails, bar snacks top notch.(Try the pear cider — it’s incredible) The restaurant section is perhaps a little pricey, but the chef is excellent and the food has been consistently good and at times awesome.

The food and wine in the restaurant are a cut above most pubs, but the bar is usually over-crowded with rowdy drunks. So depending on what I’m reviewing, my rating would be quite different. The four stars I’ve given the pub reflect only the restaurant experience, but I have also briefly described the bar experience below. Last time I was at the Prince of Wales, I had a vegetarian pappardelle that was to die for. The sauce was delicious and the pasta was cooked to perfection. My b/f had a steak that was tender and perfectly cooked. The wines are reasonably priced and well chosen to match the food. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and happy to recommend their favourite dishes and wines. They really know their menu – maybe because some of them live upstairs and as a result source all their food and drink from the pub. The décor in the restaurant is quite unique. With taxidermy, skulls, antlers, chandeliers, solid wood tables and a view into the kitchen, you’ll feel strangely at home. I would definitely go back for a meal, especially since it’s so close to home. But I’m not sure I would go there for just a drink. The space is cramped and full of really annoyingly loud drunks. It’s not that I’m an old kill-joy or that I don’t know how to have fun, I just happen to think that being fall on the floor drunk at 6pm in the evening is a bit OTT.

The Prince of Wales in Putney has a large seating area, including low stools, chairs, comfy chairs(near a fire) and tables. They serve good food both in the bar and in the restaurant. The pub is busy after work, catering to local workers(law firms, a medical centre and so forth). When I was there yesterday, one of the two real ales(Black Sheep) was off, leaving just London Pride(which is a fine pint, but I would have liked a selection). The ale was expensive, at over £3.00 a pint. They also serve a small selection of lagers, though a better selection of wine — demonstrating the demographic of the area, I suspect. The service is very slow if there are more than a couple of people waiting. This is because the bar is tiny, and they only seem to have one person working behind it. It really does look like they are sacrificing pub to the altar of restaurant. Ah well.
