I don’t know how many times I have walked down Berwick Street and never noticed this plaice. Met up with Steve B with the intention of having a pie lunch in recognition of National Pie week. We don’t take into account though, the fact it was Friday, we were in Soho, and everywhere was packed. Our choice of pie eatery had a long line, with the waiting area full. Neither of us wanted to wait, so decided on an alternative. Steve suggested The Dining Plaice; I’m pleased he did. There was a long queue of people waiting for take-out fish and chips. We were lucking that there were a few tables available at the rear of the shop. I loved the feel of this place. It was like taking a step back in time. The layout reminded me of the old Wimpy Bars(It was the burger chain of chioce, before McDonalds invaded our shores). The tables had formica covering and static seating, and a laminated single sheet menu. I ordered Cod, chips, mushy peas and a mug of tea. The service was brisk and efficient. In no time we were served a huge piece of fish with chips. As they took up the whole plate, the muchy peas were served on the side. Tea was served in true café side, with the bag still in the mug. This meant I could have a good stong builders tea, just as I like it. The cod was excellent! The fish itself was light and moist, with a batter covering that was crisp and non greasy. The chips tasted good, and again they were non greasy and had a nice, slighty crisp texture. The mushy peas were as good as I’ve had, and the portion was huge. All in all, this was as good asit gets when it comes to fish and chips! For under £10, the value was great! I would urge any tourist coming to London, who go to a pub chain and think they have got the real deal, when it comes to fish and chips, to come here instead. They would experience great fish and chips at a fraction of the price. Thanks to Unilocal and fellow Unilocaler Steve B, I discovered a gem of a place in the heart of my city, that I never know existed. It experiences like this that make me pleased to be part of the Unilocal community! I’ll be back.

Ausgezeichnet!

Not bad fish and chips. Excellent location among the hustle and bustle of the shopping area. I enjoyed a large fish and chips and a can of Lilt and was able to put my bags a down and sit. There is counter service or table service depending on which you prefer. My only complaint which may have just been a one off, was that my chips were still quite white when served and not a golden yellow color. They were cooked, but not quite there. DT

The fried fish was pretty good here, crispy thin shell, fish so soft it broke apart at mere touch of my fork, close to melting in my mouth. not greasy at all. The chips were a bit luke warm and not anything special. Mushy peas tasted like those Calbee snapea crisps. the place is a total dive, with old plastic chairs and tables that have seen better days. I do wish that there malt vinegar was not as watery, but hey, at these prices and the portion size. it’s pretty good already.

My friend said this was his favorite fish and chips in London, so we went. The cod was fantastic, lightly crispy and fresh. I figured out pretty quick that these fries were considered amazing to brits, but weren’t to my personal taste(wet soggy sad fries!) The molded seating is awkward if you have 6 people, too. Despite that, it’s a nice little spot for a quick lunch.

Ehrlicher Laden in Soho.
