Came here for a bite and a drink when everything else in the area seemed unbelievably busy. I got my Guinness nice a cold and fish and chips which was tasty. I know, I know touristy. But I’m originally from New York and felt like getting something traditional at a pub. Made friends with the people that say next to me and drank for a bit longer. Overall it was a great experience.

This pub was famous for years as The BBC Pub. Its alleged the poet George Barker once bit off a rival’s ear lobe in here! You could certainly see Reginald Bosanquet in here between newscasts in the 70’s Lovely interior with cut glass windows

They have couldrons of mulled wine and mulled ale on the bar. Now that really is the best kind of warm welcome that a pub could give you. The George is open from pretty early, which is how we happened to fall into its festive insides. 11.45am is not too early to meet friends in a pub! The decorations are festive, the drinks are plentyful, the seats are comfy and it was a lovely quiet pub away from the mentalness of Oxford Street and its crazed sale shoppers. And the bar man was pretty cute too, bonus points for that. So it was the perfect place to meet up with friends and while away the hours chatting. Mulled wine and juice were followed up with sharer platters of bbq chicken nachos and a posh meat and ploughmans spread. Really good food. Decent prices too. The food the diners around us ordered all looked super good, so I would definatly come back and eat. We followed up with three of the puddings too(well, it would be rude not to), all decent enough, but the cheesecake won hands down. Not sure that I’d love this place so much if it was packed out with office workers and commuters after work, but it was great on the holiday lunchtime that I was there.

So. Was heading for The Cock(and old fav work booze haunt behind Topshite) and it being only eleven thrity am it was shut. Tsk. Remembered The George a few streets down… so glad I did. Much better than the twatish Cock. First in the pub, we ordered some mulled wines and monster munch(ace pub snack) and sat in a fairy lit filled den. I am a massive fairy lights fan so this stoked my fire. Plus the barman was smoking hot. It was light and airy with an east end boozer feel(minus the piano sadly). Cheesy tunage filled the room making it down to earth and less ‘try hard’ than other publettes. We ordered this posh ploughmans and nachos, came quickly and was yummy. The puddings however had room for improvement, especially the blackberry crumble… bit muller corner. We even got a friendly goodbye wave from the hot oz behind the bar. Defo coming back here. The Cock is o.v.e.r…

Likeable Victorian pub. Small open bar with limited seating. The food is upmarket pub grub and priced accordingly. Beer prices a little eye– watering but if you are used to London prices the staff are friendly, my food was good. You can do a lot worse around that area.

The George is a very popular name for a pub in London so one must take extra care in describing to one’s friends where one wishes to meet for a pint. On not one but two occasions a friend has attempted to meet me at the George in Soho when I was in fact attending them at another George altogether. How embarrassing! I preferred the George I was at, and so did he, but the Soho George is nothing to raise one’s nose at, a perfectly respectable pub, well-situated and lacking much of the pretentious nonsense that mars most Soho haunts. It is, however, one of many places where there’s little point trying to get a pint on a Sunday owing to the popularity of football, a sport I only dimly comprehend.

The George is an old pub. Not just because it was establisted over 100 years ago, but because it is small. It smells like beer. You get workers in there from all hours of the day, singing songs and shouting banter at one another. There is little seating, the bar is very open into the middle of the room, and the bartenders look stressed and haggled. Everyone knows each other, being an outsider instantly gets you moderately scrutinised(but hey, this is the process here). If you think these are reasons not to go, you are dead wrong. This is a PUB! In the cosmopolitan world London is growing into, you won’t find a ‘local’ to go to like this. Take all of your mates, strike up a sporting argument and drink beer. Do it.
