The Globe

The Globe Tavern nestled in London Borough market is a grand little boozer. Although it has gone through a little refurb, it still retains an authentic gothic feel to it. A lively pub with mostly after work drinkers, it is a good space to enjoy a pint or glass of wine and watch folk. My tipple of the night was wine and they have a good selection, reasonably priced.

A decent pub right in smack middle of the market. Currently going through a refurb, can’t wait to see what kinds of improvements they make.
Normal beer selection, prosecco avail for a decent price. Only ever ordered chips which were good (hard to screw that up) but they have the usual pub food suspects too — fish and chips, Sunday roast, pie, burgers, etc.
Oh and I finally watched Bridget Jones for the first time recently, and her flat in the film is directly across from this pub. Fun fact for you :)

It will take you a very long time to get served at the bar unless you are a friend of the bar staff. On reaching the front of the queue for the bar I waited a further 45 minutes and was not acknowledged or served, so I left. In the time that I was waiting some friends of the barman, who were drinking the end of the bar, shouted their order to him and had it immediately fulfilled; this happened twice — the same people — in the 45 minutes I was waiting. I work nearby so unfortunately have had to come to this pub for leaving drinks and the suchlike a few times and this experience was not a one-​off.

At midday there was plenty of seating, pleasant music and a friendly barkeep. The beer selection was great for pairing with food from the Borough Market and the price was perfect.
There is a sign out front advertising lunch, but there is no food to be purchased inside. I was told I could bring anything in as long as I bought a drink.

Good pub with a good selection of beers. The only thing that lets it down is the lack of seating.

The Globe is a good traditional type pub with nice bare basics wooden paneling and floors but is a bit rough around the edges. They had all the standards on tap but nothing too exciting — and no craft beer. It’s fine but nothing special, and I was told to avoid the loos if possible.

I’m not really a big fan of giving this rating but I think it suits this place.
A very small, traditional pub in the heart of borough market. Internally, the pub has the traditional wooden bar and stools around the place which is quite refreshing to see in the world of glitz and glam gastro pubs!
The prices were also quite good which was even more refreshing!
The staff were attentive and helpful and very quick at the bar which is always a good thing!
A nice local after work pub to grab a few drinks in.

I like this place. «so why the two stars?» you may ask… well, the building is fascinating, originally part of the railway — you can see the line of old brick arches holding up the new bridge. It’s steeped in history — which is the bit that I like. It’s also an odd shaped building with nooks and crannies that are really interesting.
However, the actual function as a pub falls below the mark for me — we went in there during lunchtime, so it may be a lot better in the evening. It wasn’t comfortable, in fact it was pretty dead and quite cold, a little tatty and not a place that I would really want to stay in for any length of time. The bar staff were super friendly and nice, but the diet coke on tap was watery and flat. The rest of the clientele were a bit strange.

Visited a few pubs in London Bridge area on saturday and was very disappointed with this pub, there was a smell coming from the street as we approached it from borough market and we realised after a visit to the toilets where it was coming from, the toilets we the most disgusting I have ever been in.
The beer was not much better and very pricey. I had an ale which tasted horrible and even my friend who had a pint of fosters said the fosters did not taste right, we all ended up leaving before even finishing our drinks. My guess is they do not look after their pumps, buy I guess that goes with the décor in big need of a paint!

This is a great ‘before’ or ‘after’ pub if you’re visiting Borough Market as the entrance to the market is just across the street. It’s also a great pub all on its own. Friendly bartender, good selection, seating options at tables or couches and good (IMHO) music playing at a level that it can be enjoyed and still allow you to hear a conversation.
The exterior has that old pub look that makes you want to check out the interior. So many pubs have been remodeled and ruined, but this one carries some of its original charm with a nice bar, intricate woodwork, tiles, funky art collection of globes and map-​related objects.
They offer an R&B/Soul/Blues DJ night. Sorry I didn’t write down the day of the week but you could call if you’re in town and I’m sure they’d be happy to tell you.
I went here with a friend from the States and after she left saw it in the ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’ movie! Supposedly she lived above it. I saw the size of her flat and, considering the location, ask the same question movie critic Roger Ebert always does…‘How do they afford that place on their salary?‘
But I digress… Globe Pub! Great place! Stop in for a pint and enjoy!

Great pub. Predictably full of history. Right near Borough Market, so good for a sip before and after. Old wood bar and interior — this is one of the pubs that hasn’t been ruined by turning it into a chain.
Brits love American R&B and this place is no exception. First Friday of the month, come here for «Burnt Toast» — soul, jazz and R&B. The decks were right out in the bar when we were there, slightly incongruous seeing modern-​ish equipment with an 18^th century backdrop.
Right near Bridget Jones’ house too!

Average stars of 3 so I thought I’d pop inn. Unpretencious little community boozer, friendly, barmaid eager to let you sample the beer before choosing. It might be average but I was pleased to have called in for a lunchtime pint. having settled for the Bombardier at just over £3 a pint not bad for the iconic real beer loaded with distinct English brilliance. It’s the epitome of impeccable taste and great character. The rich, full-​bodied nectar is a lingering reward English, ever reliable and damned tasty! (Wells and Youngs)

Considering this pub is smack bang in the middle of tourist happiness, it should be miles better than it is. But honestly, it’s kind of rubbish. This is what you can expect from this pub:

If you’re lucky, somewhere to sit, to continue your average experience even further, or you can stand and have an average pint at the bar. Sometimes you can stand outside in the sun, but then the whole area is so busy that that’s not very fun at all. It’s mostly average.
You’d have to be running very short of options to continue drinking in here. We were, and we still only stayed for one.

Small, traditional and friendly pub with a personal touch to it, where the barmaid still sometimes calls you my darling.
Good enough choice of everything.
It’s almost unchanged from the 70ies when I used it first.
Nicely relaxing, especially when most of the pubs around are brimful with people.

The Globe Bar
Warm lights, comfy sofas, majestic wooden bar… oh the delights of a comfy pub.
I went to the Globe Bar on a weeknight at about 7:30. There was a large after work crowd socializing about the pub. It was crowded, but after a few minutes, we managed to find a seat on one of those heretofore mentioned comfy sofas. Sinking into the oblivion of the upholstery with a glass of wine, I was contented a camper as could be.
The crowd seemed ‘chummy’ and easy going. There were quite a number of beers on tap. For what I saw of the Globe, it’s good and toasty as thick hot-​chocolate. Some might consider if your average pub, but I like it just fine.

If you look close enough you will see this pub in the Bridget Jones film as it is located right beside her house!
It is a cosy little pub which is nice for going to after work for a drink. The architecture is beautiful and the interior is very ‘oldy worldy’ looking with high ceilings and quirky bits and pieces dotted around.
It isn’t the liveliest of places but does tend to get quite busy — I wouldn’t suggest it is a place for a night out if you aren’t meeting people close to the area but it is certainly a good place to go if you fancy something low key or for an early afternoon drink after visiting Borough Market on a weekend. The Globe serves a good selection of real ales and a lovely house red wine!

A nice place to hang out after work. I’d by no means set aside an evening and travel over to The Globe from the other side of England BUT this is one of those places where you can really find a bit of comfort and end up staying for a good few hours. It’s situated in the heart and soul of London and literally a stones flick (not even a throw) from Borough Market. Only downside is that the bar gets a bit busy and can at times be up to 2 or 3 people deep.

Not my sort of thing but I read the book in a moment of bordom .on a train. and sadly enjoyed the movie.

Bridget’s London home was in Holland Park, and her locals included The Pharmacy (now gone); Coffee Republic on Portobello Road (outside which Hugh Grant bumps into Julia Roberts in Notting Hill); 192; and Café Rouge.
For the movie, however, she’s been relocated south of the River Thames to Borough, an area seen in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Howards End and Entrapment. Bridget’s (Renee Zellweger) flat is above The Globe, Bedale Street at Green Dragon Court (a location for The French Lieutenant’s Woman).
Across Bedale Street you can see the shops which were transformed into the cab office, the newsagent and, of course, the fictitious Greek restaurant where caddish Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) and D’Arcyish Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) slug it out during a birthday party. The très smart flat of Daniel Cleaver is Clink Wharf Apartments, Clink Street, one of the smart warehouse redevelopments only a minute or two away from Bridget’s place.

Call me crazy but I like old man pubs. I like ‘em dark, a bit dirty, sticky to the touch. I like ‘em when they’ve stuck to doing what they do, without becoming a gastro-​this or a design that.
So with some time to kill between a great lunch and a train from London Bridge Station, I thought there could be nothing nicer than hanging out at The Globe in Borough Market with my mac and GPRS dongle (no wifi here I imagine).
On the inside The Globe is tatty and grim with the obligatory loners sitting at their tables-​for-​one with a cheap pint, staring off into space as if contemplating where it all went wrong.
Where it all went wrong for me apparently was the moment I plugged my gadget into their precious wall without asking for permission. Half an hour in I was approached by the bizarre, old, lady-​creature behind the bar, she said:
I see you’re using our electricity — no flies on her then.
Uhhhh, yes, is that a problem? I asked.
This is not an internet café she pointed out, not even slightly joking.
A few sentences later and I was packing my stuff and leaving. I called a couple of people to check that it was indeed the year 2008. They assured me it was. I looked around for a hidden camera in case I was being filmed for a TV show and there were none.
Unbelievable. There were only three people in the pub, including me. The other two were doing the staring thing.
Would it do any harm to allow me to use their electricity? I think not.
Never again Globe hole. Never again.

Where are all the actors? Ohnot that Globe in Southwarkthe pub oneSituated near Borough market & Southwark Cathedral — the Globe is less touristy than you might suspect. Half crouching under the railway bridge, the globe looks pretty tired from the outside, and that’s repeated inside — where it’s a very traditional English pub and there are a collection of random antiques (including numerous globes of course) up in the open wooden rafters.
The service is pretty speedy and the prices are good value for London, especially in the area. For smokers — its got plenty of outside space which is under the cover of the railway bridge, although if its really raining you’re going to get dripped on.
