thanks fellow Unilocalers for directing me to this place… totally awesome fish & chips! Light, delicate cod(you can choose haddock, too) beautifully coated in a crispy batter that definitely was NOT fried in old oil so the fish shined elegantly with the acidity of the malt vinegar(or with the light creamy tartar sauce that did not overpower) I’m now in a post meal coma, chillin’ after another exhausting tourist trek through London… mahalo to all the Unilocalsters in the UK!

Sorry not sorry, but this rating is entirely based upon service. We walked into this cute little place expecting to enjoy a British beer and some classic British food, but ended up entirely ignored. We sat for almost 30 full minutes before being totally fed up with no one coming to the table(table tent explicitly stated to pick a seat and they’d come to us). One waitress, who may have been off the clock, was standing at the bar drinking coffee and talking on her phone. Another waitress passed my table more than 5 times, cleaned the table next to mine, but never approached our table. I tried to flag down the busboy but he looked downright frightened and still no service. I appreciate that European service is more relaxed than American, but after 35 minutes we had had enough and left. Truly disappointing given prior reviews.

I stumbled in here looking for a quick bite before an evening appointment. I had, the night prior, been to The Golden Hind, which was rumored to be the best fish and chips in London. I was a little disappointed, but still had the craving, so ordered the same here. I was simply blown away. The fish was clean, flaky, and not overcooked – a rare find. The chips were slightly battered, and thus were crispy on the outside, but dense and soft on the inside. It was a perfect pairing, lightly dusted with salt flakes. I paired with the black pudding fritters, and was delighted. Really an outstanding meal, an unassuming location, and a lovely vibe.

Fabulous! The fish is light and crispy outside and juicy and tender inside. Best non-fancy-restaurant fish and chips we’ve had in London. Great location as well.

Best fish and chips my wife and I have had. Hands down. Look at the picture. Enough said.

We stumbled onto this wonderful gem during a business trip. I’m not a huge fan of Shepard’s Pie — but this place completely changed my perspective on the dish… The dish was phenomenal tasting and the service was great too. My colleague had lots of great things to say about her fish & chips too… Small place, but great food and great service — highly recommended…

They have great British food, but I got a cod loin(or some other sort of white fish) and it was miniscule. Really. I paid the most of anyone at my table but was still starving afterward. My friend visiting from Paris had the fish and chips and another had shepherd’s pie, both of which were quite filing(they said) and hearty. Neither finished theirs, which was great, because I could have eaten three more of my own dish. Needing handouts aside, they have a great house red and make incredibly tasty food. The service is good, the ambience is nice — but darn it, make more generous portions of fish, please.

Wonderful meal! Traditional British fare prepared beautifully our party had Sausages and Mash, as well as the Lamb Rump. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. The service was prompt and a little abrupt in presentation. The music was played loudly, however, given we were the only guests there at the time, the staff obliged in turning it down right when asked. I would return to this restaurant to enjoy more English dishes.

Try to go earlier in the evening for the«Early Bird Special.» Two courses for £15. Bleu Cheese and pear salad was great and the Shepard’s pie was very good also. Good service, good beer selection, good food.

You make a big claim when you have the word«Great» in the title of your restaurant. And yet, they nail it for sure. A classic, quaint, delicious spot for a meal. This is a medium sized restaurant that keeps going back with more tables. There are pictures of famous British people on the walls but beyond that, the decoration is simple — wooden furniture, big main windows, soft lighting, nice. We came for Sunday Roast and I enjoyed it. It was two courses for about £15 or three for about £20. We did the two. I got the crab salad for a starter(which was nicely presented but small with a few pieces of lettuce and a few pieces of crab. Not a salad so much as a crab lettuce taster) and my friend got the chilled tomato soup, which was excellent. It came in a tea pot that they poured into a bowl with crusty bread and it was the right level of sweet. The only issue I had is they serve it with a fork instead of a spoon(since it’s chunky soup), which makes it very difficult to eat. After asking if it was a mistake that they didn’t bring a spoon, and told that it was not, we brokedown and asked for a spoon anyway. Much easier to eat then. I then got the beef roast and it was damn near perfect. Lots of veggies, great meat, potatoes, flaky Yorkshire pudding, a TON of gravy(I hate when they don’t give enough gravy) and horseradish sauce when I asked for it. My friend got the veggie tart which was a sweet and flaky quiche-like dish. Also tasty(but she was a little sad they didn’t have a good veggie roast being a vegetarian and it was what she was hoping for.) Still, both mains were top-notch. The only issue I had here was service, which was a bit hit or miss. Sometimes they brought us what we asked for right away. But other times it took a lot time to even get bread brought to the table, or the group of six who were sat long after us were served first because they ordered the same roast that we did. We ended up waiting another 10 minutes as they ate, which just seemed wrong. But beyond that, a charming place that I’d recommend in a heartbeat.
