The Prince of Wales

I went to the Prince of Wales for the clubbing part when we went to POW with some friends. Tickets online were £15 for last release because we decided to go last minute but it was free before 9pm for the first 200 persons to walk in and the first tickets releases are cheaper too.
As of the music we had a great night. As of the place, I really liked it. They have 3 floors: one inside, regular clubbing space, and 2 rooftops! I love rooftops especially when partying because I need the fresh air. These ones aren’t much of a view because of the way it’s orientated but it’s a pretty area, it’s covered in case of rain I guess, and it has several bars.
They had a few technical difficulties early on in the night which forced them to close the higher rooftop and there was no music on the other rooftop but it didn’t bother us too much. We just kept going from the first floor to the roof for oxygen.
Close to the end, the barmen put pitchers filled with water and plastic cups at the end of the bar which I found clever and nice.

I went to POW to see artful dodger last summer and relive my misspent youth! The roof top is lovely in the sun, crowded but great atmosphere. The bbq was nice (from what I remember). My main concern was when downstairs watching artful dodger the room was suffocatingly hot! And mean bouncer guy wouldn’t let anyone open a window! Otherwise great night all round!

Nice pub with great atmosphere. It becomes a discopub after 10pm. Music is okay and prices are average. It gets a bit busy during Saturday evening but there’s a nice terrace at the back if you need to get some fresh air or have a cigarette.

Als Club direkt neben der U-​Bahn Station super angebunden. Leckeres Essen mit mega Atmosphäre. Das Publikum ist durchmischt und bunt. Die Musik für Tanzen am Tag bestens geeignet. Wer also einen Ausflug mit Freunden macht ein absoluter place to be in London.

They have alcoholic slush puppies and a roof terrace. What more do you need. Really great venue for all day drinking!

Good fun, lively on a Friday night with good music-​close to the station. Would definitely go back

I’ve yet to eat here but it’s an essential place for a drink in Brixton, particularly if you want an easily reachable meeting point near the station. It gets very busy on an evening so don’t go pinning your hopes on a seat. It’s busy and loud in a non-​twattish way though, which is very important. During the day when it’s warm, they leave their big windows open so it’s great for people spotting all the mad individuals that wander around Brixton. Obviously you can see through the windows during the cold weather too, but there is something more charming about the fact that they could easily stick their arm through and swipe your handbag.

Today was the first Sunday that I have a roast here (yes, I’m obsessed with roasts). I went with my mum to do some shopping and we ended here, where they have pork belly in the Sunday menu (yay!).
It wasn’t too busy (most of the people where finishing their meals or just having a drink, I keep having lunch at Spanish times), but there were some problems with our order (mine, in particular), so it took me almost an hour to finally have my lovely pork in front of me. Anyway, I enjoyed a lot.
So, it is not a bad option for a Sunday meal in the area.
Also, they have live music, a very friendly staff an plenty of space.

This brightly lit venue is not my ideal place for a drink but it was rather nice with a good beer, Roasted Nuts by Rebellion
Used to be a much darker (lighting wise) venue called Prince of Wales.

I had my doubts about the Prince, but its charms quickly won me over.
At first glance it seems scruffy and for the first 10 – 15 minutes the music seems surprisingly loud, particularly on the Sunday evening my friend and I came by. But soon the attractions of this place put this all to one side.
The music, though loud, was pretty darn funky when I was there. Barry White if I remember correctly. The sofas are comfy, the ceilings high, the food okay and, unlike when Glen M paid a visit a year ago, there was a pretty decent real ale on tap — Rebellious Red. Good enough, in fact, to delay my friend and my visit to the Craft Beer Company afterwards. And the people watching here offered here is excellent: loads of colourful characters, most from the hipster/​Clapham crowd that’s been moving into Brixton of late.
Conveniently located by the station, I’m sure I’ll be returning soon.

This is actually not as bad a pub as it was in my head. It’s not really the sort of place that you would make you final destination, but good stop over, quick after work pint and generally an ok spot as locals go.
I popped in after work to do some more work after work, and as it close to the station, not out of my way and they have wifi, I thought I’s give it a go. So, I ordered my pint of the black stuff, and asked for the password. I was handed a piece of paper and was told that I should look for the pub name with guest beside it. Which I did… nothing.
To cut a painful story short, the bar staff had no idea that their security login page was 1) online and not a password to access the wifi itself 2) that the login page doesn’t work with Chrome. Needless to say I wasn’t impressed and would have left if it wasn’t for my pint. On the off chance I thought I’d try another browser and it worked.
I think I’m being pretty generous with my three stars, but that the kinda girl I am!

This place has always been iffy– I mean, it’s right on the corner of the Brixton Oval.
But it’s been done up. And it’s OK. Pretty nice for an on-​the-​main-​road and in-​sight-​of-​a-​Tube-​station pub.
But it’s not really a pub.
There’s a wide selection of lagers, Guinness extra-​cold (yech!), St Aspall’s Cider (yum!) and a wide range of bottles.
The music’s always a bit loud. There’s always a colourful selection of folk in here matching the rainbow flags. There are exactly 0 real ales on tap.
I can’t speak for the food– seems a bit spendy (£10.95 for Sunday roast), but how bad can roast be? It just has the feel of a place that’s been done up expecting the Brixton Oval to have Clapham/​Balham style gentrification, and it missed the mark.
That being said, getting a pint of cider on a sunny day and sitting outside on Coldharbour Lane watching people pass by… that’s worth a third star here.

The Prince is pretty nice, does pretty good food but would be vastly improved if: 1. The beer wasn’t flat 2. The staff were more helpful and 3. It wasn’t so damned expensive!

Not sure if all of the above comments from 2008 still apply in 2011. The Prince seemed to close for a bit and has now reopened and it’s looking great. It’s certainly replaced The Rest Is Noise shaped hole in my Brixton life. They’ve just got a new menu too which sounds rather nice and a step up from your typical burger, chips, panini in a pub option.
Their ‘beer garden’ is not great though. We’ll call it a ‘beer yard’ as it’s pretty much a picnic table through the back, a bit like The Dogstar. Smokers won’t mind them though, it’s primarily for them and gives them a change of scene from hovering outside the front doors.

They’re redoing the kitchen so hopefully it means better food. It vascillates from great to horrible depending on who the ever changing cook is downstairs. The 2 for 1 steak/​burger Tuesdays is a draw but be warned that you’ll never get your steak cooked right (anything you say — rare, medium rare — seems to translate as well done).
That said, it’s a great spot for drinks and the music on the weekends can be top notch. There’s always a friendly crowd and the waitstaff are great. Definitely worth checking out.

The Prince is one of those places that you end up in, and have no idea why. I can’t really slate it, as i used to go here alot and although its ok (really only ok, mediocre, middling) it seems to lack something.
The music is always super loud in here, which makes conversation difficult, and i’ve witnessed a fair few fights and rowdy tramps trying to blag a beer — not the nicest advertisment for a place!
But the booze is pretty cheap, and if you’re heading to the academy or Ritzy then this is a decent starting point. Don’t count on it for a wild night out though.

The Prince in Brixton (sitting right next to the big KFC) is one of those places that I always seem to end up and I’m never really sure why. The interior design is quite nice, and it’s furnished quite well, but I always find that it’s far too dimly lit to get comfortable.
The drinks are averagely priced (for London that is), and there is a good range of spirits to choose from (although the cocktail menu is somewhat moderate. However, you can always count on good service here, and occasional live music as well.
Having said this, the choice of music that they play through the stereo system can be quite variable; sometimes you’re treated with classic rock tracks, other times you may have to sit through laboriously boring jazz /​house fusion (being a jazzer I find this kind of music extremely boring).
The outside seating area is a lot to be desired, I when I’m sitting there I always get an uncomfortable feeling like I’ve shoved into the backside of the kitchen. Aside from this the Prince rates as being somewhat comfortable with few gripes to be had.

The Prince is owned by the same people at the Dex Club next door, a trendy members’ bar for people in the music industry. However, unlike its neighbour, it isn’t an exclusive place and somehow manages to be warm and inviting whilst retaining an element of «cool». It’s popular with Brixton’s young trendy locals but also attracts a lot of randoms, which helps it retain a local flavour.
One of its strong points is the menu, which has a great selection of bistro pub food including an exceptional vegetable-​stack burger that you can garnish with a selection of toppings including blue cheese and peppers.
The layout is good for anything from big groups, to casual dates, and intimate chats. On weekend nights it gets really busy, and the music gets louder and the bustle bigger, but it’s also a perfect Sunday pub, with great big wooden tables to spread your Sunday papers on. It’s one of my favourite London pubs.

The Prince is a decent pub not far from the tube station with some good food, good music and good lagers. The 241 burger /​steak nights on Tuesdays make it particularly appealing, though the food is good to have on other times also, with the steak and ale pie a particular favourite of mine.
You’ll often get good music playing here and it has a nice, relaxed atmosphere for late nights on weekends. Although it has a beer garden, it’s more just a concrete driveway with a few tables thrown on it which has very little natural light, but enough to please the smokers.
