I debated long and hard between 3 and 4 stars, and really wish there was the option for 3& a half! The Roebuck is tucked away on a residential street minutes from the Oval. It’s location is probably the reason I’ve never seen it full! It’s a cute little pub, with a nice garden. But the lack of people really does take away some of the fun of being in a pub. The food is tasty, but is not consistent. Three of our party all had the same dish, and all 3 were very different. Having sampled my friend’s pulled beef poutine, I decided to have it myself. It was still tasty, but the cheese hadn’t been melted and the meat was not as tender. My friend who also ordered one got chunks of fatty meat, no pulling of meat there! When she complained she was told that you can’t pull beef, and they’d run out of pork that had been on the previous servings… We won’t got into the religious ramifications of serving pork when it’s advertised as beef, but I take real exception to not serving what is advertised. To be fair they gave a refund to my friend, but grudgingly. So good food but it might not be quite what you’re expecting…

The Roebuck is a bowler’s arm’s distance from the Oval cricket ground and historically a fin pre and post match meeting place to discuss all things cricket. For the rest of the year the Roebuck is simply a lovely homely place with a country pub air about it. Often quiet in the evenings the Roebuck is a friendly place to drink added to that there is the feeling ofdrinking in someone’s living room. It could be considered a touch eccentric for some, almost English tea room or Torquay B&B. There is nothing to write home about concerning the ale or even the standard pub grub, it is all as expected; no thrills, not expensive but still thoroughly pleasent. In many ways the Roebuck just feels like your local on your first visit. There is a garden and a pub cat for added quaintness, brightly lit and easy to find the Roebuck simply must be visited should you be in the area for the cricket or if you’re just plain lost; you’ll be looked after here.
