I was recommended Wheat by a colleague who announced that their yellow curry was infinitely better than the staple green curry from Papaya, the little takeaway Thai place just 30 seconds away on St Annes Court. It’s an additional 50p but I was assured that this extra expense was well worth it for the divine coconut flavour which drenched the rice. I’m a sucker for a recommendation but sadly, I was to be disappointed. Whereas the nice people at Papaya shovel loads of curry over a decent portion of rice, leaving it wonderfully juicy and topped with plenty of chicken, Wheat are considerably less generous. The pots are smaller and extremely rice-heavy. Another colleague tried it before me and warned that I should request extra sauce, which I did, but it came at a price; the server only gave me a measly single spoon of chicken, and even having made that sacrifice, it was still comparatively dry. Although the promised coconutty flavour was good(at least what I could tentatively discern through the wads of dry rice), it wasn’t nearly good enough to warrant the extra cash. All in all, a pale imitation of its deservedly far more popular neighbour. If you’re too scared to ventue down a Soho sidestreet, visit Wheat. But as a local, I’ll be sticking with Papaya.
