Being a Midlands girl I couldn’t wait to try this place as everyone in Newcastle raves about it! Big disappointment if your used to real nicely cooked good curries I would recommend this, it’s over hyped and the décor is better than the food! The nans breads are the highlight. The curries tasted like the jar curries you get from a supermarket so if your not a curry lover and experainced diner of curry houses you will probably settle for what they offer. Good places for big groups and party’s but avoid if your looking for a good nice curry

Stylish restaurant and a good chain restaurant. Good for groups as the restaurant is large. Menu is extensive and has the largest naan bread ever seen. As large as your face. Service is fairly good but best come when just opened up for dinner.

Akbar’s is a chain Indian restaurant with maybe a dozen locations in northern cities. Looks like a great place to go for big groups and families, we saw several such parties there at dinnertime last Monday. They have a very nice atmosphere, with classy but not stuffy décor. I’ve seen it get very busy here! Service was quick, and after they delivered our G+T and beer, respectively, we ordered chicken tikka + spinach balti, roshan lal(lamb with onions, tomatoes, and peppers in a thick sauce), a pilau rice, and a garlic naan. We’d seen the massive naans when we passed by the windows, assumed that those were the«family naans» described on the menu, so just ordered the normal size. Well… the normal size is MASSIVE. I can’t even imagine what the family size one is! They come basically on a hook that is placed on your table, and you just rip bits off while the rest of it continues to hang there. It’s actually a cool contraption that doesn’t take up as much space on your table so that’s good! And the garlic naan was delicious as well, though 2 people will never finish it(don’t even think of ordering more than one naan for two people! One would feed three I think). The lamb dish was the favorite, although I enjoyed the chicken tikka too — my fiancé didn’t, but turns out he doesn’t like chicken tikka much as it is. Still, we’d definitely recommend the roshan lal. Wonderful sauce that was great soaked up with pieces of naan, very tender lamb. We needed to leave quickly to make the pub quiz a few blocks away and they were fast with the bill when we needed them to be. Good, solid Indian food, not the best or most inspired around, but definitely worth a try, especially if you are a naan fanatic.

Akbars sells giant naan breads. That hang form a hook. They look fantastic. In the hands of drunk people at a work do, endless fun. The food is pretty tasty, and caters well for large parties — we had a continual supply of drinks ordered and the waiters were all lovely and pleasant. Definitely decent food in when in Newcastle.

ive never eaten in any other of the branches of this chain but after eating here i definitely would like to. my favorite thing — we didnt get one — is the family naans that they have hanging up! really cool but way too much naan for two people so we didnt get one. have to say the food and the décor was really nice, the place was packed out but we got a table and while it was really noisy inside it was still a good atmosphere. great location too.

I recently visited Akbar’s with a group colleagues. As a party of 12 we were not seated until everyone showed up. Strict rule at Akbar’s. After everyone was seated, it took the server 20 minutes to finally greet the table and take drink orders. The service was slooooooooow, however the food was good and it was enough for two people to share a dish. The restaurant is nicely decorated with a mix of modern and traditional style. I would visit Akbar’s again only as a back up place to go for decent indian food.

This place was incredible and I cannot believe no one has posted on Unilocal! The vibe was totally chill and the deco reminded me of my travels to India and Morocco. The family naan comes on its own stand and each dish comes out of the kitchen in its wrought iron bowl. Huge menu for all the old school and new school thought in Indian food and beyond. I was with all Indians and Pakistanis and they were all very pleased with their meals. Make this a destination and GO.

We have eaten at both Leeds & Middlesbrough Akbar’s before and enjoyed it both times. So when we found out they were opening in Newcastle to say we were excited is an understatement! We have been back 4 times since it opened. The service is always warm and friendly, the food is full of flavour and you can smell the fresh spices. I am not to keen on the rice but that is personal preference. I can’t stay away from the place! We plan to go back for my mothers birthday next month! The price is fantastic too. They have the full menu on the website. I haven’t been able to try the Duck Tikka yet, hope they start doing that soon!
