A place for coffee, tea and cakes which are the main attraction. There is a food menu, but the food is more style than substance. The cakes are made fresh on the premises every day and there is a good selection. It is fairly pricey but worth a treat.

The reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is only because I think the décor wasnt 100% perfect but apart from that, this place is worth a visit. The chocolate cake… oh my the chocolate cake! Best ever!

A lovely contemporary café in a central location. My regular order is a vanilla latte and a slice of their famous and exquisite Victoria sponge which is without doubt the best on offer in Newcastle! The cakes and pastries on display are all very appealing and don’t disappoint. The main menu however does tend to lack in variety and can be quite pricey. I’ve had the steak recently which was cooked perfectly to my request so no complaints there but it was rather dry and lacking in the complimentary sauce. You do have to order and pay at the counter so be aware if you are dining alone you will need to put an item of clothing on your seat as otherwise someone may well be sitting there on your return! The staff are very friendly and accommodating where able but it does get busy as it is a popular venue so there can be a wait for your order. There is outdoor seating available if the weather permits which is great for people watching and soaking in the city centre atmosphere. A definite must for coffee and cake!

Simple and stylish little café in the shopping district of Newcastle. I did enjoy it and wish I could bestow a slightly more favorable 3.5. However, my chicken sandwich was bland and hardly ‘grilled’ as was advertised. It’d be fine if they had not put ‘grilled’ as the major adjective, but they did so that’s kind of what I was expecting. The fries accompanying it were actually thin and delicious but not enough to make up for the sandwich I eagerly awaited as it took some time for the food to come out, despite it not being super busy. The fish cakes were reported to be good but lacking some kind of kick or perhaps some citrus to cut through the creamy bed on which it floats. The prices are a bit high and the menu isn’t very creative though it is well-thought out with lots of variety and several Asian-inspired dishes. Points for seasonal ingredients meaning that the menu changes often.(Which is handy as I had a glance at it right now and it looks better than last month). I wouldn’t be opposed to giving it a second visit. Perhaps next time with my parents as it gives you that clean-cut ‘bring your parents here’ feel. If I come again I will give the scrumptious looking pastries a go!

I am a coffee fiend and can hands down say that Café Royal has the best in Newcastle! My weekly guilty treat is a cappuccino and a slice of victoria sponge. Apart from the above, the pastries and cakes are pretty lacking. They look glorious and I’ve been caught out by my sweet toothed temptation many times and tried nearly everything. and nearly always been disappointed. Lack of flavour, dry, hard pastry and generally just bland. Pretty to look at but save your cash for something else! It’s usually very busy around lunchtime and you may have to wait to be seated. The savoury food looks delicious but I have yet to try it as it’s pretty expensive and I usually just come in for the coffee :) Staff are usually quite pleasant and it’s a nice location for a sit down between shopping

Visited about 4 times in the past few months and overall I’m no too impressed. Pricey for a café and slow service. I have had the quiche with french fries twice and both times they came seperately with a annoyingly long wait inbetween. The first time I visited they have a huge sign at the door saying ‘Please wait to be seated’ yet after standing there for a few minutes trying to make eye contact with staff I realised you just stand and queue then find a seat. Everytime I’ve been back the sign is still there no big deal but if you are not a regular I find you are standing there wondering why the staff are ignoring you. I have also had parsnip risotto which I felt was a bit of a rip off at £8.50 as it was what I would class as a ‘posh portion’ and still left hungry unfortunately! I probably will return for the delicious spicy crab quiche but not for the slow service or staff that look like they would rather be somewhere else.

We used to have breakfast here regularly on a Saturday but the problem is it’s become too popular! Still, what can you expect with the delicious food that they serve. Nice selection of cakes and pastries — the Northumbrian fruit loaf toasted is delicious. Also nice fresh juices. The coffee is good and there are newspapers to read while you sip it either at an inside table or, if you can brave the elements, outside.

Gorgeous food with a home-baked feel. Gets quite busy as it is so popular but it is worth waiting for. Great choice of cakes and sweet biscuits and the scones are lush! Award winning, too.
