It seems wise to book online. I wasn’t sure about the time so i didn’t make any reservations and went straightway. Luckily we had a table, far from the window. :( But the food, service and décor are fantastic! Honestly, I’m not familiar with Italian food and our waitress helped a lot! We ordered two starters and two steaks with ice cream for dessert. I’m definitely going back and I’ll make sure I book online first. :)

First off, this place serves the best tea I’ve had in a restaurant. Bonus points there. I had checked out the menu before we went so I had some idea of what to expect. We had booked online and when we arrived we were shown upstairs straightaway to our table. I really liked the stripped back wooden décor and the lighting levels; there’s a nice atmosphere in the restaurant and a great view over Monument square. The staff were really friendly and efficient even though the place was really busy. The food itself was really good and we all enjoyed our choices immensely. There’s a good choice for all tastes on the standard menu plus a nice specials board for variety. I had grilled mackerel on a panzanella salad and it was superb. My warm orange polenta cake for dessert was also delicious. They also have a local beer available which is a nice touch. The prices are OK I think. More expensive than your neighborhood Italian restaurant but in line with somewhere like Zizi. Only downside was the rather enthusiastic air conditioning which was a bit chilly.

The ground floor seems to be the bar and lounge area so make sure you walk in and up the stairs to the right for the restaurant. The view was pretty nice from atop. Our server was nice but got our order wrong, gave us the wrong beer and then my shrimp pasta dish had hair in it… Asked for another plate and got one pretty quick. The manager stopped by our table to apologise and took that off our bill which was nice. We ordered a pizza, and a Caprese salad too. Everything tasted fine but I don’t know if I would return.

I don’t feel qualified to be able to review Jamie’s fully so I will have to return and update my review after dining here. This review is based on their bar area which I have frequented a few times for the odd glass of wine. Really nice décor including an unusual and quirky light centrepiece and from some seats you get a decent view of Grey Street and Monument. Drinks prices are pretty steep so for example you will pay over £5 for a small glass of wine. The service has always been good when I’ve been there… the bar staff are quick to serve you and will help bring drinks over to your table. Service with a smile is always refreshing! I’ve not been in a rush to eat here yet as I sampled the food at Jamie’s chain in Leeds and it was fairly disappointing — overpriced for very simple food. That said… I will withhold my opinion of the Newcastle chain until I have tried and tested it. I’m not sure if it was perhaps a mistake to have the restaurant at the back of the building as although it will offer more tranquil dining it looks to lack the same charm as the bar area.

I had a lovely evening here with a large group of girls. We started in the bar having drinks, and were delighted by the cute little orange trees on the lounge tables. We accidentally plucked one when we were touching it, so figured we might as well eat it — yes they’re real! And sour! But they probably wouldn’t appreciate you following my lead and picking their baby oranges. It was an accident, I swear! After some wine, we went upstairs for a table. We didn’t have reservations on a Wednesday night but they managed to fit us in perfectly at a communal high top table. I love the feel of the restaurant — they have an open kitchen, you can see the fire going, smoked meats hanging from the ceiling(unless they’re just decorative…), wine barrels — it feels like a cozy Italian trattoria though perhaps it’s all just for show! But it really sets a nice mood. I had a rocket and parmesan salad with a small portion of crab spaghettini. Lovely that they have small portions of their pastas, as then you can try more food! It was the perfect size meal. The flavors were strong and lovely, with capers, red pepper, and anchovy in the sauce. The pastas are all homemade, and mine was cooked absolutely perfectly. Makes a big difference, when it’s done from scratch! Our server was very sweet and friendly, and let us split the check every which way — nice of her, since I had to leave early and that made it much easier. It doesn’t compare to recent meals I’ve had in Italy, but honestly for Newcastle I think it’s certainly close enough! It’s a fun, lively restaurant with well-made Italian food. I’d be happy to return anytime, I think it’s a great addition to the city centre.

What a debacle! I decided to celebrate my birthday here having ate at a previous Jamie’s which was fantastic. Well basically the name and the deco is where the similarities end. I should have sensed something was wrong when we first entered and the hostess advised our table was ready, but then we still had a 10 minute wait! Our waitress was possibly the worse I’ve had, in my whole life. The whole evening was comical! Firstly trying to decipher the specials, ‘errr a pizza a white pizza with an egg on’ they literally had no clue. Trying to order drinks, as a party of 7 you would expect the waitress to work her way down the table to take orders but no she stood at the top and we had to shout, same for ordering the food. We had to ask for side plates for our starters which we’re practically thrown at us. my father ordered some olives, apparently there were two types of olives on the menu, my dad pointed to the marinated ones on the wall however she delivered the iced ones and argued with him when he notified her that she had taken the order wrong, which was so cringe worthy. When our mains arrived they forgot to order two of the steaks so two of our party had an ‘8−10 minute wait’ which turned out to be closer to 15! By this point the meal had lost it’s momentum. To be fair the manager didn’t charge us for our food, but to be matter of fact there is no way we would have paid for it in any case. I’m not sure if the food was bad or if the whole evening just turned a bit sour due to the hideous service. Every time we ordered drinks(and being there as long as we were that was a few) first the waitress would take one drink order then try run away, and even when we got a full order there was at least two drinks missing. Unless there are major staff improvements here this place won’t last.
