This is a pleasant real ale pub in downtown Nottingham, and it’s indeed a «cave pub» like Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, but nicer. More atmospheric, more laid-back, less tourist-y. The selection of real ales isn’t huge, but they’re there, and the atmosphere is very appealing indeed, no doubt because it being a cave. I’d prefer it to Ye Olde Trip. The fact that the caves are spread over several rooms only makes it more intimate. Recommended.

Hand and Heart is where those in the know go to drink in a cave, instead of the over-hyped tourist trap that is Ye Olde Trip. Here you’ll find a much larger cave, with much more intimate setting and a better selection of Real Ales. You can really soak up the atmosphere in this place. The beers are in great condition too. Don’t forget to show your CAMRA card for a discount on beer!

Isn’t it interesting how you can tell when some reviews are not genuine & often self promotion. I visited this pub with a bunch of people that I’d met for the 1st time in Nottingham. My 1st impression was very good. It ‘looks’ nice & they seem to have a fair few real ales. After requesting a small taste of one, I didn’t want to delay other people being served. So I opted for a pint of kronenberg lager– it’s a taste I’m familiar with & quite refreshing. Now I travel all over England & Ireland, spending a few days each week in central London(just to let you know that I’m used to varying prices) £4.20! Yes you read it right! £4.20! Naturally I was quite shocked & asked the barmaid(who was 20 something) if this was normal for Nottingham. She told me that she didn’t think it was especially expensive! Either she doesn’t venture beyond this place of work & doesn’t spend money. Or perhaps it’s a family business. Logically(as an employee) she’d be on minimum wage. ish & the fact she is working would suggest she needs the money(if not a family business) & so would know that this is way over the odds. I am aware that their are some beers marketed as ‘speciality’ beers. kronenberg is not one of these, it is generic & most London pubs charge less than £4. A few actually charge £3& one is in ‘fashionable’ Shoreditch. No beer mats & no warmth, but nice décor! This is why it’s not busy. AVOID!

Really cosy pub serving real ales, and often with free nibbles on the bar. An excellent place for a relaxing drink after work, after dinner or as a starting point on your way into town. Only issue for me is the toilets, which are incredibly small!

The big plus point for this venue is that is has a fantastic wine list, which is quite well priced. Food is generally good although the menu doesn’t change frequently enough for me and the service can be slow. A recent visit at 8pm on a Wednesday was met with no food orders being taken as they had enough customers… I saw 10 people!

Derby Road is lucky enough to host some fantastic pubs, that are the envy of many of my visiting friends. The H&H as it was refered to earlier is the best of the lot. Amazing setting in the caves, great beer/ale selection and the food isn’t half bad either… although probably the weakest suit you shouldn’t be put off as the bar is pretty high! Keep your eye out for the wine list it’s really good and the real winner is the champagne menu… thats right a menu which includes more than Moet! This wouldn’t be my first choice for a special occasion but for dinner with friends without the pretentiousness there are few better places in Nottingham and if Pete the Feet is tickling the ivories then you are in for a real treat!

Great pub on Derby Road, has a lovely atmosphere and decorated exceptionally. It serves great homecooked food all day in the week, and 12 – 3 on a Sunday. They also have a live jazz band playing a couple of days a week, and the gallery upstairs hosts some interesting exhibitons.

The Hand and Heart is one of Nottingham’s most famous pubs and has been around for nearly 200 years. If you’ve not yet discovered the Hand and Heart, you should set sail immediately to explore it. The pub is built into sandstone caves, is back in business after a three year hiatus. In a world of ubiquitous bars trying desperately to be trendy and characterless chain-pubs, The H&H flies the flag for individuality. The back of the pub is set into a cave, and the candles and darkness strike just the right balance between cosy and spooky. In contrast, the gallery space upstairs, which features exhibitions, live music and workshops, is light and airy with big cuddly sofas and huge windows looking out over Derby Road.
