Like Vanessa says, if you’re a vegetarian, this may not be the best place to go, as most stalls are meat centric(Go to Maoz instead for a great veggie box!) Get there early and the queues are quiet but get there 1pm and be prepared to wait. The best stands will have queues and the quiet one… well there might be a reasons for that… I tend to shy away from the pulled pork, wraps and burgers and try to go for something interesting. Hot Mess Poutine is there, although a tad expensive was what is essentially chips, cheese and gravy, but I do love my poutine. The duck confit wrap is probably my choice, with a wrap clearly stuffed with duck, you feel you get value for money, watch that last bite though, it can be wet! A handy place for lunch on a Friday, although it’s also there on a Thursdays and Saturdays. I just need to convince my coworkers to go further afield than Pret…

Street Food Union is an organised group of street vendors hawking their freshly cooked wares on lower Berwick Street. Overall I think the meat eaters have the upper hand for choice. The few vegetarian options I’ve tried were pretty bland, not plentiful and so not worth £6. Too much wrap, too little filling… lots of rice, not lots of vegetables… undercooked aubergine… A lot of mediocre stuff on the pricey side. Yawn. Blah. I haven’t yet tried the Malaysian stand and am hoping that will provide some salvation. Again, I think if you are going for the pulled pork or other freshly grilled meats you are more likely to find culinary happiness. I’m giving it 3 stars instead of 2 to reflect the views of my carnivorous colleagues, and as the vendors themselves have always been cheery. A nice hello can go a long way in the midst of a crap day, and supporting a small business is better than feeding any corporate chain otherwise taking over the neighbourhood.
