J’adore !

One of the best meals I had in Paris. There was no need for reservations. However, I would recommend planning well when you go to Paris and getting a reservation at some of the classier and harder to get into bistros. However, my friend and I had a hard time with the language barrier and stuck to places that we could simply walk into. My cassoulet was the exact kind of homey French cooking that I was looking for that evening. Along with some cheap house wine, the dinner cost us about 20 Euro a person. The service thankfully was kind and helpful, unlike most of the places in Paris. Parisians willing to utilize English in a cordial manner can be rare at times.

Things I Learned at Le Bistrot Des Comperes. 1. The French do not eat burgers with their hands. That’s what I surmised from the knives and forks being used around me combined with the looks of disgust being thrown in my direction. Although, the latter could simply be a result of having to see my face stretch grotesquely in order to stuff that large, very decent burger in. 2. If you want to dine outside in Paris, be prepared to secondhand smoke at least a pack. 3. Much like in the States, appetizers often outshine the main plates. For instance… 4. The Jar of Sun(1) is a tiny mason jar of a layered, goat cheese and fresh tomato salsa-like concoction that(2) could warm the earth with its tastiness. That being said, it’s a testament to the kitchen at Le Bistrot that my goat-cheese-loving companion actually preferred… 5. Their homemade, half-cooked foie gras, which was admittedly absurdly delicious. Creamy and rich, it spread so easily over the toast provided, and paired perfectly with what I believe is a caramelized onion chutney that I would gladly put on everything I eat for the rest of my life. This includes feces, which I understand many people would like me to ingest in conjunction with my death.

We dined at Le Bistrot Des Comperes for lunch our first day in Paris. Our family of four was very hungry when we arrived, and we were not disappointed. My wife had a large salmon salad, one of my kids and I each had salmon risotto and my other son had a cheeseburger. All of them were very good(but the burger was cooked much rarer than we do in the US. A medium in Paris is like rare at home). I had an entrée called the Pot of Sunshine(I think). It had goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes and some other things and it was awesome. For dessert we shared profiteroles and warm chocolate cake. Both were excellent! The restaurant has interesting decorations with quotes painted on the walls and a giant dumbwaiter along one wall – we got to watch a waiter lower himself down to the basement. Very entertaining! Our lunch came to about 75 euros for the four of us with no drinks and only two desserts so it isn’t inexpensive, but we enjoyed our meal.
