There’s a café on the Western Road too with a few seats outside to catch the sun(when it shines). No WiFi per se but you can tap into the eircom hotspot if you’ve an account.

Three stars because I think they over price, it’s up there with the Gloria jeans type of coffee shop… So if that’s your thing!

I really miss Café Depeche! The tiny North Main Street branch(next to the Gate Cinema) was only 5 minutes from where I lived and had just the perfect coffee boosts. I was dragged through many a day studying for exams by large take away Americanos. Their lattes and cappucinos are gorgeous and there is an array of tasty treats if you need a sugar boost with your caffeine. The coffee shops are cozy(although the Lancaster Quay one is a little larger) with slightly unpredictable opening hours. One of life’s great pleasures was bringing a nice steaming coffee from Café Depeche into the Gate cinema to really feel snug watching a film. But the most bizarre thing of all is the staff. They are REALLY lovely! I have never encountered anyone who wasn’t friendly and smiling with a great knowledge of the coffees and an apparent genuine pride and interest in their job. Almost as refreshing as the caffeinated beverages!

Initial concerns about how the delicate name of Café Depeche might suffer under the ungainly pronunciation of the Cork accent seem not to have affected what has become known as the home of hot chocolate in Cork city. Situated conveniently close to the Gate cinema, and on a main walking route of the city centre, Café Depeche boasts a massive range of nearly fifty flavours of gourmet Swiss hot chocolate in one place. Everything from mint, to cinnamon, to lemon and lime is used to make this thick and creamy taste of heaven that little bit different to what you might have had before, at prices so reasonable that they really don’t reflect the quality of the beverages. There’re a few seats available in the somewhat small interior, but they’re not the comfiest, so most people will stop off on their way to somewhere to get their fix to take away. Alternatively, you can pick up a tin of their fabulous hot chocolate to take home and make yourself; or if you’re looking for an interesting present for a hot-chocolate loving friend, you could do a lot worse than pick up one of their gift sets.
