My cousin and I stopped by the Black Sheep on a Friday night around 730. It wasn’t super busy, mostly people up at the bar and a few scattered tables. We found a spot, sat down and moved to another because the first one was dirty. Our second table was dirty as well. Decided to just suck it up because we wanted to order. Took our jackets off got settled in and waited. And waited and waited. We watched the floor and noticed one server working her section another punching in an order, one in a deep conversation with the bartender and two chatting amongst each other. We continued to watch and wait. Nothing, so we put our jackets on left. Im just going to throw it in, it was –24 with 30km/hr wind. And we went back outside and faced the elements to leave. Im giving them a 2 because I have been there in the past and had received some service it was far from the best service but still service at the very least

I just want to add a follow up to my original review on Jan 24⁄12. The menu has changed… the BBC& Mushroom Swiss burgers are no longer on the menus. The portion sizes have changed as well. The burgers are still great but due to the Management change(or so I’m told) things have changed slightly @ BSP. I don’t go there as often as I used to now. Just a heads up to those who have read my previous review.

I came here for an after work drink with friends. I wasn’t expecting it to be very busy but there were a number of primarily men, enjoying a beer. We seated ourselves at a booth but didn’t know if we were to go to the bar to get a drink, as I didn’t see a bartender, and no waitress. A few minutes later the bartender spotted us, and told a waitress as she came to take our order. Although we didn’t order any food, the menu looked decent in prices and pub food. My drink was watered down, too much ice and couldn’t taste much booze. Can get noisy in here with the tvs, golf game, and chatter but it wasn’t too bad. Washroom was dark and one of the stalls didn’t have any toilet paper. Of course it’s the one I chose and didn’t realize it until after. Unfortunately no one could spare me a square. Not sure I would come back here for another drink, the atmosphere didn’t quite work for me.

Been here a couple of times. I really like the food. I had one of there burgers which was delicious! Ive also tried there wings and they were pretty good as well. It can be a little bit expensive for a pub, but I would pay extra for delicious food. Service was pretty good. Didnt have to wait too long for my drink to get a refill. Servers were quite nice too. It is a little loud though so conversation can be a bit difficult. Overall, a very good pub to try out in downtown Edmonton

I wish I could give this place no stars. The food itself is decent, but the service is consistently and horrifically bad. Our first trip was our server’s first night. Can’t fault her for that, but it was a Friday night – what kind of place does that to a new employee? Our second trip, our server openly accused us of shorting her on the bill(and for no reason), and wasn’t even apologetic after she counted the cash ATOURTABLE. The third trip was the final straw. We arrived early on a Sunday evening. Our server spent most of our visit flirting with the bartender, which caused us to wait a half hour for each of our first two rounds. We thought ordering buckets of beer would solve our problems, but it took her fifteen minutes to put in our order, at which point she returned to tell us they were out of whatever it was we had ordered in bottles. As we got ready to leave, we noticed a patron at the bar attempting to toss loonies down her top, which she encouraged by pulling it away from her chest. Don’t waste your time or your money.

We went Thursday after work. Pints were $ 4. They are the big pints too. Ordered the wrap with chicken and the side of mashed potatoes and the garden salad. The meal was excellent. Similar to Original Joes. Service always spotty. Haven’t tried anything else there though. Waitress recommended the wrap. Layout is central bar with booths and tables all around. Not the best for groups with more than 6. Has flat screens.

I went in the middle of the afternoon for a late lunch. It was ok Service and not bad food. It was nice and sunny for a downtown pub. Parking is a bit of a problem but probably better at night.

The Black Sheep pub is OK. Service is OK and food is OK. It’s in a pretty great location near the downtown core, and the interior is nicely decorated. I’ve been to the pub twice, and while I haven’t been overly impressed, I’ve always had OK experiences, even when the place is very busy, our servers have always been able to keep up. If you’re in the neighbourhood, stop in for a pint or some decent pub food. Just don’t expect to be completely blown away. You’ll have a solid dining or drinking experience.

My wife and I were looking for a new post-work watering hole and we noticed the old Stonehouse building had new tenants. The first few weeks we went were absolutely awesome. Great staff, food, and drinks. Throughout the last few months, the friendliness of the wait staff is hit or miss(more hit). When they are on their game, they make you feel important. I’ve only had the wings and the fish & chips(at the time, the fish pieces were WAY too big). The drink specials are one of the reasons we kept coming back. We’ve never been there with the party crowd. Pros: Drink prices, sweet potato fries, wings, wait staff Cons: Don’t go there for lunch if you have a tight schedule.

In my lifetime, the spot on the corner of Jasper Ave and 111 Street has been three places: First it was Stonehouse, then Prohibition, and now Black Sheep Pub. There isn’t much difference between the three of them, other than what is on the walls, the menu, the staff, and the wicked bocce ball courts that Prohibition had(I’m still mourning that loss). The interior is essentially the same as it has always been. The space is quite large, with lots of tables and a few booths along the edges. Where there once was a booce ball court, there are now a couple of pool tables. There are two bars and two sets of bathrooms, with a small dance floor way at the back. They seem to play the standard(generic) dance tunes that most pub-turned-club places play on the weekends. Not even the good stuff, but the techno-y(i don’t know what they call it these days!) repetitive crap. They could at least throw a little Madonna or MJ or, hell, even Britney in there for those of us that are over 18 or 19 to jam to. I was there last Saturday and they played some classic hip hop tunes way later in the night, but still pretty typical choices. I used to go to Prohibition quite a bit on the weekends, and I think I liked it a little better than BSP weekends. I’ll still go here whenever, but weeknights are much more mellow and chill. They have great specials every day, my personal favourites being Pint Night Wednesday($ 4 for ALL pints! Yes, all of them) and 4×4 Thursdays($ 4 domestic pints and $ 4 hiballs). As far as food goes, I’ve had bites of the calamari($ 9.50) and crispy pickles($ 8) and thought they were both quite tasty. I’ve had a lamb burger($ 11.25) here as well. It was alright, but I’ve definitely had better elsewhere. I am a fan of the prices here. Lots of TVs around, so a decent place to catch a game. I came here for the Canada vs. Russia World Juniors final, and some people at our table had to kind of crane their necks to get a good look. Great location as well. Regular street parking but I always manage to find a spot nearby.

I’ve been back to the Black Sheep a few times since I wrote my original review. For the most part, I find the service to be excellent and have also discovered several drink specials that are very economical(like $ 3 highballs on Mondays and pints of domestic draft for $ 4 on Wednesdays). I have also tried a few items from the reasonably-priced menu. The fish and chips in particular are incredible. The two huge pieces of haddock are breaded in batter that is made fresh at the pub every day. Served with a huge helping of fries and creamy coleslaw, the portion is enough for two. And indeed, I shared the dish with a friend for lunch, and we were both satisfied. I’ve had the soup of the day on two more occasions, and also tried the yam fries. The yam fries are available as a side with sandwiches and entrees, but since they are so sweet I prefer them just as a snack. They are thickly cut, crisp, and delicious. The smoky, peppery chipotle mayo dip is excellent. It is also a generous portion suitable for sharing. Although I have not yet tried them, I witnessed someone eating wings, and they looked plump and delicious. As someone who has never really liked going to bars, the Black Sheep Pub is really growing on me.

Rated 1 star from my first and only experience and definitely the last. Formerly the prohibition pub, the only changes we all seemed to notice are darker walls and a few pictures of England put up on the walls. The service was so awful. Our server was rude including the rest of the staff. First off, I arrived after my friends did and it took about 10 minutes for another girl to walk by, for my friends(who had empty drinks already the entire time btw) to ask if she could send over our server. 5 minutes later she finally comes by and with attitude. Then, to wait 1 and a half hrs for 2 burgers? Really? And left empty on drinks for 20 minutes at a time when it was completely dead? Completely unacceptable when I’ve been in the service industry for 7 years and know exactly what should be expected at even the most simple level of service. There were no apologies from our server, she would just make up excuses like ‘I was waiting on the bartender’ when we clearly saw our drinks sitting up and not being run, or ‘she was dealing with some issues’ when we saw her chit chatting at the bar. To top it off, she demanded we pay up because ‘she was done for the night’. There definitely is the appropriate way of asking and this wasn’t it. Sure, it would be semi-fine when they wanted to concentrate on being mainly a night time bar, but not when it tries to be a day time pub, and especially after the awful service. I will not be returning that’s for sure. There are a lot of things they need to improve on, including hiring girls with any type of experience. How can 3 different girls not know that they didn’t even carry regular mayo in house and it take 10 mins of scrambling and more excuses to get a replacement of any sort. All I can say is we all thought it was a complete joke and all left shaking our heads. I wouldn’t recommend this ‘pub’ to anyone. The foods subpar and service atrocious.

Dude, like, what’s with all of the framed photos of Irish ewes and rams on the walls at The Black Sheep? I mean, I get it. Irish pub. The anti-flock. Blended cotton is bad. But, really. It’s rather disturbing! I still like it here … mostly because I thought the bar’s pre-precursor — the Stonehouse — was pretty cool. Never went to Prohibition. The former club façade didn’t appeal to me. But Irish pubs, on the other hand, are on my homing radar. I like a good neighbourhood watering hole. Black Sheep has the laid-back atmosphere of a corner pub but it’s massive inside, so it can accommodate the weekend party crowd. The bar’s got the requisite green walls, dark wood and sports vibe of an Irish swill stop, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. No matter. New England pubs on this side of the Atlantic are a pretty safe bet. Drinking a pint in a pub makes one feel debonair. Debonair is cool and E-towners like their ale, so it’s really a winning combination. The Black Sheep’s menu is better than average. My fiancé and I shared a chicken breast and chorizo club on a toasted baguette, served with two sides.(Twinkle.) The beer was cold and the service fast(twinkle, twinkle.) and the place was rockin’ at 9 o’clock Saturday night.(twinkle, twinkle, twinkle) I give it three stars — for all of this AND the big vestibule at the front door which will be great for winter overflow line-ups.(If you’re young and crazy enough to do those minus-forty torture stints to get inside). If you’re looking for a good ba’(forgive the irresistible pun!) to add to your Jasper pint crawl, the Black Sheep is down the lane from Red Star and The Bank betwixt the Pint and The Druid.
