I feel like all one needs to say is It’s Fat Franks!(microphone drop, peace out) Cuz lets face it practically everyone knows its the best when it comes to the dog business. I have tried many of the food truck vendors around the city and never had a bad experience. The vendor on 124 St one year even gave us all free drink coupons at my work. Basically you can’t go wrong.

I love Fat Franks. Their jumbo veggie dogs are phenomenal. And their abundant condiment bar means I never have the same dog twice, even though I always order the exact same thing: veggie dog on whole wheat. Last week, my dad was up from Texas for Folk Fest. At Friday noon, he came up to my work to have lunch with me. I gave him two options: Fat Franks, just outside on the corner(I told him they were excellent dogs), or the cafeteria in my building(bleh!). He said he wasn’t really hungry for a hot dog and instead chose the cafeteria. That night, at Folk Fest, he came back to the tarp, raving about having just had the best hot dog in his life over at the beer tent. I couldn’t help it; I responded with, «I told you so!» as if I were once again 14. Yes, Dad, they are the best hot dogs, hands down.

It’s true what everyone says about Fat Franks being everywhere — they’ve got a monopoly on street dogs in town. Over the last few weeks I’ve indulged at a festival in Little Italy, near the fountains by the Legislature and in front of the west end Canadian Tire. Not that I eat tons of hot dogs or anything, it’s just hard not to in the summertime. Veggie dogs are gigantic and cooked to order so you know you’re not getting a meal that’s been mummifying in the sun for a few hours. And there’s a sweet selection of condiments including a billion styles of mustard and old standbys like sauerkraut. Things seems to be kept generally clean and, a true sign of success, Fat Franks now even boasts its own brand of bottled water. .

Fat Franks kick ASS! By far the best hot dogs in the city! They’re very smart about locations, too. I’ve been to the stand on the corner by the General Hospital downtown, by the Law Courts, in St. Albert in front of Canadian Tire on the weekends, at Symphony Under the Sky… the list goes on. The people working there are very positive and upbeat, they love what they do. They offer veggie dogs, which I can’t have but my vegetarian friends appreciate. The prices are reasonable. Generally I don’t trust takeout hotdogs… you know, the skinny ones with the prongs through them that look like stretched raisins.

I never thought I’d say this, but it’s too big. Fat Franks is good, but the jumbo dogs are huge. I have a hard time finishing them, and by the end, I’m sick of meat all together. They taste good, because they are made over a fire. I really like my hot dog cooked a lot, and a few times I’ve gotten a dog that was slightly too undercooked for my liking. I like that they have fresh condiments like onions and pickles. Call me disgusting, but I was surprised myself, when I discovered that pickles actually taste good on a hot dog. I haven’t tried Frank’s smokies, but I think I may one day. But honestly, I can make a hot dog on the barbeque at home, and it tastes just as good.

Fat Franks has Edmonton’s best hot dog, hands down. I always look forward to the summer, not only because of the better weather, but because of the appearance of Fat Franks stands all over the city. Located particularly downtown(including a food court location in Scotia Place) and on the south side(where there is a main location on Whyte Avenue), the hot dogs are fresh and delicious. The classic hot dog comes in jumbo and junior sizes, and are made from beef and chicken, giving them a lighter taste and texture. I also enjoy a jumbo veggie dog, made from tofu. The honey ham smokies are also very popular. You can choose white or brown buns, which are grilled warm. A full selection of condiments are on the side of the cart, for you to customize your dog the way you like it. A jumbo regular or veggie dog will run you $ 3.50 and are huge.
