Blarg — This was so hit or miss that I feel compelled to give Casa Crespo a two because I’d never return nor would I recommend it to friends. As it’s known, Oaxaca has become one of the more popular Mexican tourist destinations for fans of food and drink. While Mexico overall has lots of tourism, Oaxaca is not near a beach and primarily benefits from tourism relating to their biggest exports: woven rugs, black pottery, and of course, MEZCAL! Given that tourism is majorly on the rise and people are coming in droves to eat, drink, and drink some more, there’s really no room for mediocre or less than average food. But that pretty much sums up Casa Crespo. Apart from the stunning views of the plaza and the cathedral right next door, the food, the drinks, and even the service are totally average. In fact, just to get to the roof deck you have to take this bizarre long walk through the main floor of the restaurant, through the actual kitchen(is that sanitary?) and then up a flight of stairs, across a little platform, and onto the roof. Then once you’re there you better hope you have your cellphone on your person because the ambient lighting is not bright enough to allow you to read your menu. They have a lackluster mezcal list, the cocktails are reminiscent of 90’s drinking culture(a la blue drinks and Malibu rum) and the food is hit or miss. I had underwhelming and over-mayo’d shrimp tostadas, my fiancé had a really bizarre turkey dish with 3 types of mole but one small serving of turkey, and my friends each had a bowl of stone soup. From the looks of it the stone soup was the only solid order. The«bicho» appetizer was a waste of money at a whopping $ 12US(most dishes are half that). The chapulines were actually ground into a powder for a salsa though the menu made it seem like they were fried and whole. The cheese had an ant sauce on it but we swore the cheese was actually a piece of chicken. Lots of mystery to the $ 12 dish and even more disappointment. Not worth going back.
