Recently I’d had a long day and didn’t feel like cooking, and neither did I feel like paying a bit for a full on restaurant meal. I thought I’d try out my local kebab shop, and I’m glad I did: far from bring the usual mystery meat dodgy joint, this one has a good range of Turkish/“Middle Eastern” food, including pizza, iskenders, and salads. I had a vegetarian moussaka and I was super pleased to see that it had a number of recognisable vegetables in it, and tasted like someone had cooked it recently, and it wasn’t just taken from the freezer and reheated in the microwave. I also got a decently sized and equally fresh salad with it too. I shall return!

I think this is one of those kebab places that don’t really get the recognition they probably deserve. I like my kebabs, so I venture to new places all the time, to check out what’s on offer. And this place really offers a lot! Not only do they do kebabs but they also do a type of pizza which was interesting. I hadn’t really come across that before. On top of that they are flexible with your orders, and are also very accommodating to vegetarians which is always nice. The flavours are really there too, which makes me think they use quality ingredients and probably as fresh as possible. They do table service and are prompt with cleaning up which is nice too.

Today I needed to grab some lunch out in New Lynn, I wanted to find something quieter than the mall food court as I had a job interview straight after lunch and I wanted to quietly prepare myself without so much distraction. I remembered this place, Ali Baba, as I had been past many times as I head on into Countdown situated nearby from the mall car park. It was the perfect place, quiet, outdoor or indoor seating available and a few customers but no bustle. I ordered a lamb kebab, no tomato and I got to have two sauces for no extra charge. Ideally I would have picked the garlic yoghurt sauce but just before a job interview? Probably not the best idea I figured! Total cost with a juice — $ 13.50. It was super delicious! Freshly made and wrapped ready for easy consumption! The guys here do seem to have a slight obsessive compulsive disorder in regards to hygiene, solution for customers at the till, cover over the till, cover over all the crockery on top of the espresso machine, and when I thought I was doing them a favour handing over my plate they were adamant I leave it exactly were I was, at least we can feel safe with their safe food practices. P. S. They sell Halal pizza too:)
