North Shore Unilocalers hand out 4 an 5 stars to very average establishments willy nilly and I wonder if it’s because they’ve never eaten anywhere decent? If you’re looking for pizza like Al Volo’s or Prego’s Italian style or New York style pizza from Epolito’s in Grey Lynn(formerly Onehunga) then you’re going to be disappointed. Service at Blitza was friendly and speedy. We ordered a small Hawaiian, small quattro stagioni and a garlic bread takeout and it was ready in 15 mins. Generally Blitza love to pile on all their tomato base and pizza toppings and are equally liberal with lashings of parsley garnish which they put on everything. Hawaiian is kind of hard to mess up, the ham was ok quality, but somehow the tomato base and inch thick toppings didn’t add up to good pizza. The quattro stagioni ‘four seasons’ is named for having four ingredients–(not inc. the cheese), it varies from place to place but here the menu said«ham, mushroom salami and shrimp». Somehow sliced tomato made it on there. Call me a stickler but I really don’t want ingredients popping up on my food that weren’t listed on the menu? Especially when you’ve got a catchy name like«four seasons»… I guess my whole feeling about Blitza is «yeah you could eat here… but what separates it from dominos or pizza hut?» Try those other places I mentioned where the pizza is a revelation and then holla back about Blitza’s pizza…

I went pass Blitza some time ago and this place was full on a weekday. So I thought, boy I gotta try this place next time. Me and my dining companion was in North Shore desperately wanting a nice pizza and pasta and I magically remembered this place. The interior and restaurant itself is not a fancy-ass place compared to other new eateries but the place was definitely neat and cozy. We ordered a Mexican pizza($ 23.5) and a Chicken fettuccine($ 25.5) which I thought were a bit expensive. We waited and waited for them to come out but no news. Finally when our cokes were fully diluted with ice, they came. I didn’t understand why it was so slow as the place wasn’t full that day. However, the frustration soon disappeared with first bite of the pasta. Fettuccine was cooked to the perfect al dente with huge strips of chicken and mushrooms in creamy neapolitan sauce. It was the most amazing pasta that I have ever tried. Pizza was slightly disappointing as it was rather a Meatlover than Mexican — ham, salami, pepperoni, bacon, chilli and tomato. I felt there was way too much meat and not enough Mexican feature to it. The restaurant was quickly filled with people so we felt great about booking our table. I asked the waitress about another nice pasta and she said that they do an excellent cannelloni — I will soon return for this!

Food delicious … Waitresses appears and says«I’m here but only for a short time what would you like to order?». It was a Sunday night and they were ¾ full. Meal took 45 minutes to come but when it did it tasted great.

For me Blitza is a bit of a local. Have been there many times over the years. The pizza is always great and don’t get me started on the pizza bread appetiser! I recently experienced the pasta for the first time(it always looks so good but sometimes you just can’t go past a gourmet pizza!) and I was not disappointed! The pasta menu has two vegetarian options and the cannelloni was to die for, Absolutely perfect. The owner always seems to be there making sure everything is running smoothly which is always nice to see. He is friendly and accommodating. My only complaint is that the pasta seems a little over priced. We paid $ 79 for a pizza bread starter, two pasta mains and two glasses of wine. Pretty pricey. A great little restaurant in the heart of Birkenhead.

I was on the mission to find something tempting for dinner. I headed off towards Birkenhead, destination unknown, thanks to Unilocal and it’s amazing network of reviews available at a click of the finger, I was pointed in the direction of Blitza Pizza. A fantastic find; as a local I had always wanted to try this fabulous restaurant. Arriving before 6 pm that evening meant that my partner, my 19 month old and I were swiftly seated within seconds of walking in. Although three other tables around us were also occupied, we received our menu and had our drinks after a few minutes. Whilst looking at the menu, quite a few people arrived and left with takeaways that had been pre ordered. I loved the choice on the menu, very Italian themed, however also had a few Greek options too. The steak dishes sound amazing, and from what I saw ordered by another guest, very well presented. I was very sure that my pasta pick of Chicken Fettuccine would be perfect, and it was really tasty, and had lots of meat and flavour from the sauce. I was very impressed, and finished my bowl gladly. My partner decided on the amazing gourmet prawn pizza which also included scallops, I had a little tester of this and have to say this is one of the best ever seafood pizzas I have ever eaten! The chocolate coloured walls really relaxed me on this quick early dinner date for three. If I had been able to keep eating, I would have loved to try the traditional Tiramisu on the dessert menu, I guess the next visit it shall await me.

I have been ordering Blitza Pizza since it was a tiny takeaway shop in Milford near to the hospital. Back then the Blitza Special was the order of the day, and it’s still on the menu now they’ve moved themselves to swankier digs in Birkenhead. I actually think overall this is the best restaurant in Birkenhead. The interior is nice enough to distract from the street outside and they’ve got lovely big picture windows out the back with views out to the city. The menu actually has quite a wide range of Italian inspired choices, so there’s something for everyone. I do think the meals here are quite calorific though, case in point, the Blitza Pizza. Tasty as it is one of these bad boys has at least 1 cm thick ingredients on top and I’m guessing half a block of cheese. Not for those on a strict diet!

I’ve been here twice now. The first time I ordered a pasta dish — I can’t remember which one now because their names are always so similar and confusing. It was delicious — I do remember that. My boyfriend ordered the steak and, although I was thoroughly enjoying my own meal, I had some mad food envy. The steak just looked like perfection and it sat on these awesome vegetables and was smothered in a good-looking sauce. Never mind — I let my food envy go and it was a good night. Then… I came back to Blitza just last week. I did the same old«what the hell should I get» and indecisively stressed when the waiter came round. I ordered the chicken carbanara. It was so creamy and cheesy I really enjoyed it. But… someone else ordered the steak. And again I was tormented by how good it looked! So next time I’m ordering the steak and letting my food envy get the better of me!
