What a waste of $ 8.00! My warning should have started with the inattentive service from the man behind the counter. Once I ordered my blueberry muffin he hurriedly bagged it, crumpled the top of that bag and said $ 4.00. After which I replied with a smile, thank you, I would also like a long black please. The coffee was stale, the muffin was not fully baked and tasted like cornbread. They were both so dreadful I threw them in the garbage. Bad, bad, bad!

Muffin Break is a reasonably ok chain of cafes serving coffee, muffins and some cabinet food. I did a stint working at Greenlane hospital so I used to always pop in here for a coffee in the morning. The coffee served was pretty good and I often used to chat to the Maori guy who ran the place about music etc. If I was very peckish I would have a rasberry muffin — moist muffin with a blob of icing on top. I would try not to have one every day as they are heavily marked up and you could spend a fortune on them. I would sometimes come for lunch here too as the grub in the staff canteen often didn’t look the best. You could get a small piece of lasanga — overpriced at $ 9. Overall, a basic no frills café experience but I thought some of their muffins and food were a bit on the pricey side.

The name suggests this might be an obvious choice if you are on a break and fancy a muffin. The reality is that it’s a little mediocre. Average coffee and nothing special in the food cabinets but the smiling and happy staff and some well placed comfortable seating add a ray of sunshine to an otherwise ordinary café. Nothing offends at Muffin Break but it also isn’t a stand out choice. On 2 occasions when ‘dining in’ I seem to have been forgotten, although when I have reminded the ever friendly staff they have been very apologetic and have rushed to catch me up. My muffin tasted less than fresh on one visit, but dipping it in my coffee ‘French Style’ got me through it, even if it did mean I was on the receiving end of some funny looks — I don’t think dipping pastries in ones drink has caught on here yet!
