Oh Occam, you’ve seen some things that a café just ain’t supposed to see. A stalwart of Grey Lynn, Occam reflects a simpler time when all a café had to do to impress was serve a chicken and cranberry panini and a giant blueberry muffin. Despite its dated appearance, it’s a great café and the location in the heart of Grey Lynn’s dingy shops is hard to beat for people watching. The service is always super friendly and Jude the barista is fabulous.

This is a good Grey Lynn café that’s been around since before I can remember. It’s a solid performer. The coffee is good(improved recently that’s for sure). I usually get a big breakfast which is above average as far as they go — the sausages are pretty cheap and nasty otherwise everything else is good. Come here if you want a good coffee and a nice breakfast. Service is so-so.

We have been a loyal patron for 2 years now. But over the last months the service has got steadily worse. The new owner needs to spend money to maintain the premises the condition of the interior has fallen below an acceptable standard. the only saving grace is the coffee and the parking. Sometimes the staff need to move on. Hopefully the new year will bring some changes

Occam always is consistently good. Many other places come and go but we can rely on Occam when bringing friends in from the west. good coffee, friendly service and wholesome foods.

Good ol’ Occam. Even though fad cafes come and go, this café still stands strong after all these years. Not sure why as the décor definitely needs a spruce up but I always find myself going back there. It’s a great place to know that you’re always going to get a seat(as it’s huge) and get good service. Their coffees are a win too with the ever-reliable Allpress beans. Every day of the week it’s packed with Grey Lynn families, yuppies and students which means it always has a great vibe about it. And it’s perfect for people watching if you’re nosy like me. They also are open late and have a few drinks to help you enjoy the afternoon. And it’s a great place if the other café across the road is packed with too many people. Occam will always have a special place in my heart and I hope it will stay like that for many more years.

Occam recently nearly left us — apparently the management wasn’t particularly focused on the business and the doors to Occam briefly shut. It was gutting to see this Grey Lynn institution closed up, but luckily(miraculously?) the place opened up again and has been going strong since. If you’re a nut(like me) who prefers to sit outside a café, even in winter, Occam is a literal shelter from the storm. With braziers burning and clear plastic wind-breaker walls from floor to ceiling, Occam is great in the colder months. In summer, you can enjoy a warm breeze and early sun by sitting on the Selbourne Street side of the café. Lovely! If you’re into a bit of brunch, Occam’s servings are really super generous. So bring a healthy appetite and a pair of stretchy pants. If you’re into having a coffee, Occam’s is — and has always been — pretty damn good.

Occam’s been around for as long as I can remember and is always a great place for a pit stop — whether it’s breakfast, brunch, lunch, coffee or «I’m having trouble coping with the kids, oh look we can get a glass of wine at Occam» Saturday afternoon occasion. The kids like it here; they can be slightly subdued with a hot chocolate and a snack, and no one seems bothered by their presence which is always a good thing when you have children. It has a laidback vibe and is a good people-watching spot without the posi-ness of Ponsonby. The food is great, the wine does the trick and everybody’s happy.

Occam used to be one of my regular haunts when a former flatmate worked as their barista and the coffee was excellent and(ahem)… often free. Once he moved on to pastures green I kinda stopped going to Occam. Which is not to say that it isn’t any good. The food has always been enjoyable and reasonably priced for what you get. They do delicious salads and if you’re going for brunch, the eggs benny is always a good option. But nowadays when I find myself in the area, I’m more drawn towards Kokako. Sorry Occam, it’s nothing personal!
