I’ve always had a thing for Urban Jungle since the first time I came here, when I ordered the big breakfast after a hard night on the spirits, and I needed something filling and simple to get my head to stop throbbing. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when the promise of a big breakfast turned out to be just that: BIG! It’s hard to find a place that gives you good value for a nineteen dollar breakfast, but these guys do it every time. Add to that a bucket of coffee and I was hooked. I don’t live out west anymore, but I still like to pop in every now and again, and while it’s still pretty good for value in Grey Lynn, I couldn’t help but notice that the place has changed hands and has downsized slightly, which is unfortunate. Still, I will continue to give them the benefit of the doubt until they prove me wrong, which they haven’t yet!

I found myself in Grey Lynn last week and in dire need of a coffee. Kokako looked pretty busy and I just wanted somewhere to chill out so I stopped in here. It’s quite a pleasant café inside and there was plenty of seating outside. It struck me that it would be a good place for a business meeting as it was quiet and you could hear yourself think. The woman behind the counter didn’t exactly kill me with kindness but the coffee when it came out more than made up for it. It was one of the best coffees I’ve had in Auckland in quite a while. Rich and creamy but not too milky. They had really nice brown sugar in big granules — this enhanced the flavour and was a cut above the run of the mill white sugar you get everywhere else. A pleasant little café with very good coffee.

I first saw this café when I was living a few roads away on Rose Road, and the Grey Lynn shops was the walk to the supermarket and coffee stores I liked to do, as a change to the rush and hustle/bustle of Ponsonby Road. Also because the name Urban Jungle reminded me of a bar/café back in Fiji I used to see growing up, so I was fascinated whether perhaps they were linked. haha wishful thinking. This café has a great amount of seating outdoors as well as in, and the food comes across as Turkish/Greek food, the owners also seem possibly Turkish. They have really good coffee, and delicious slices of cakes, I tried the day I visited a banana chocolate iced cake and some carrot cake which were both sensational. If you more interested in having a beer and a meal here, you can as the café is fully licensed as well. Great service, and a nice place to catch up with friends.

Urban Jungle may sound like a place where local animals come to sit and squawk away to their hearts content, but the atmosphere of this community café is much more relaxed. I have been invited to work meetings there on a very regular basis and it’s easy to see why — there is a plethora of tables, an enormous menu and delicious coffee. What more could you ask for? Every time I’ve been there I’ve also been able to get a park directly outside — being able to park out front puts this place above the others in the area for a duck-in, duck-out experience. While the food is pretty standard café fare, I do appreciate the speed they deliver great coffee to the table; speed and taste don’t often go hand-in-hand in Grey Lynn’s cafes.
