From the outside, Slip Inn kind of looks like a converted warehouse, with a nice little deck tacked on at each end. Inside the décor is simple but it’s a big open space, with plenty of seating, cheap drinks and alright music. This seems to be the only proper pub for a few miles so there’s an established crowd off regulars that come here, every time I got past I see a bunch of people sitting on the deck, who look vaguely like the same people who were sitting there the previous time I went past. The pub quiz sounds really fun, keen to check that out. Otherwise not really my scene but a good local pub nonetheless.

The Slipp Inn is perfect for a few quiet drinks out on a Sunday night, its one of those little local pubs that every community needs in its repertoire. I regularly see an interesting mix of people down here, all the good old boys propping up the bar, families in for a meal and assorted groups of younger people. I once left my handbag behind on an evening out with my partner and a couple of ladies kindly looked after it for me, so the clientele here are usually pretty nice. The drink prices are reasonable for a bar and the staff are friendly and personable. I haven’t tried the food, as I’m usually in here to partake in the drinking but I’ve seen some of the meals going out and they look pretty nice for standard pub grub. It has some nice outdoor seating as well, so you can take your drink outside and check out the happenings on busy Birkenhead road whilst enjoying your beverage.

I have heard about Slip Inn quite a bit over my lifetime. It seems it’s a bit of an establishment in Birkenhead, every time I drive past there are people sitting outside, no matter what the time of day. I recently went here for it’s very well-known Wednesday night pub quiz. It was a really great quiz with a fantastic and charismatic quiz master who seemed well-loved by all the locals. We turned up at 7, for the 7.30 start and lucky we did, the place fills up and by the time the quiz starts you’re hard pressed to find a seat. The quiz runs for about 2 hours and is always different. A really cool way to spend the night. Slip Inn is actually far bigger than I thought it was — there is plenty of seating indoors, and also a great area out front where you can kick back and relax with a pub meal and a beer in the sun. With a gaming room, fireplace and separate heated area for smokers, it’s a real crowd pleaser all year round. There is an extensive and rather tasty menu, and a large range of beer and wine. There are weekly events and specials so be sure to look it up to see if there’s something on the night you go.

On a mission to have a hearty traditionally kiwi meal on a cold winters night, the Slipp Inn Pub with the hearty delicious menu and fireplace proved to be calling out to our troop. This cosy pub was bustling on a week day night when I arrived, and luckily we were able to secure the table next to the fire place without to much fuss or wait. The menu consists of typical local pub fare such as bangers and mash, fish and chips, and Lamb shanks. I enjoyed my delish Lamb Burger, fresh tasty patties with just enough salad, dressing and the classic kiwi matches of beetroot and egg. Was not too large to eat, as sometimes burgers in Pubs can be, and accompanied by crispy wedge like chips made up a fine meal. There is quite a busy pokie machine room at the pub– which I believe they can do without in our community. Service is fast and flowing. I enjoyed the taxidermy decorating the wall of the pub where I was seated, which is the only highlight of there pub décor. As I have been there a few times now, I would recommend parking in the Slipp Inn customer carpark which is under the pub, entrance on Birkenhead Avenue.
