Hit n miss with both food and service. Last and final visit resulted in both greasy chips and an even greasier piece of fish!

Off the main drag in St Heliers, it is worth going for the walk around the block of shops to find this place. As somewhat a fish and chip connoisseur(I’ve definitely reviewed a few of them), I can say they do seriously good fish and chips. I’m pretty sure I visited it twice in a week once. So they are right when they say«One visit and you’ll be hooked». There is so much more than fish and chips here too, with delicious looking salads, fish cakes, gourmet burgers, even ready made meals like seafood chowder are available. I remember there were some really recent magazines available to look at while waiting for your order too. Once you’ve got your order, why not eat it down at the beach? It’d be rude not to!

In a somewhat spoilt area for fish n chips, The Fishmonger is probably the pick of the bunch. There is a range of seafood on offer, with The Fishmonger in St Heliers diversifying from the traditional options of fish, chips and burgers, to almost doubling as a ‘fish’ shop itself. It provides a range of seafood from scallops and fish, to the occasional offerings of fresh paua. Additionally, pre-made seafood dishes are available in the refrigerated display cabinet, such as my favourite, the raw fish, also known as kokomo. Be sure to get it when it is fresh though, you will see as it will be a full dish of fish. Even the traditional fish n chip options such as the burgers and fish are slightly more glamourous, with the fish seeming fresher and more flavoursome, and the burgers larger, with simple yet defining ingredients, such as swiss cheese and red onion — which are not the usual corner fish shop burger fillings. However, the price is indicative of these extra elements!

Known as the more ‘expensive’ fish and chip store in St Heliers Bay, The Fish Monger certainly doesn’t disappoint if you are willing to spend just that little extra on take-away fish and chips. The standard fish and chip fare is available at The Fish Monger, however with a slightly upper-class twist — for example, you can choose to get your fries beer-battered, or you could get a homemade Thai fish cake to go with your meal. Sauces such as sweet chili and aioli are also available. The fish burgers are a notably great choice, however do keep in mind they are rather huge — luckily I managed to give my uneaten second half to a friend later so I didn’t feel too bad about wasting such a deliciously crafted burger. The Fish Monger also caters to nights where you might prefer to make your own meal, as they offer fish in a cabinet to take home and cook yourself. Fresh salads are also available, so if you want a bit of green on the side of your fish and chips, then you have come to the right place.

I used to frequent this place when they had it in Parnell, and although the St Heliers shop is slightly out of the way I still sometimes make the trip, delicious fish and chips that are worth the high price. I love eating fish and chips, but the problem is saturated fats kill you. A meal at the Fishmonger is no exception, every delicious bite loaded with potential heart attacks. For reasons which I have not thought through properly, I believe that the more expensive the meal of fish and chips is the less unhealthy it is for you. Now, if you know the first thing about anything you will realize what an absolute piece of nonsense logic this statement is. But when you have delicious fatty fish and chips in your mouth, logic goes out the window my friend.
