The sign says it all — best pies in town. Ponsonby prices but totally worth it… my favourite is the Huffer pie.

Best pies in New Zealand. I like the chicken mushroom pesto and huffer special, which is a Mexican themed pie. Off the top of my head I think its filled with mince beef, cheese, onions, capsicum(bell peppers), hot sauce, and sour cream.

Love the pies from the Food Room. While working on Ponsonby Road for a year, this became our regular Thursday afternoon tea. The staff are friendly everytime you enter(maybe because we are back yet again for another selection of pies, or maybe its just because they are genuinely friendly people, who knows). After being overseas for years having not eaten a pie, this was my first stop for a pie when I got back into the country(perhaps a little sad, but well, when something is good, you go back for more). Yes it can be easily missed, and my friend was not too impressed by the location or décor, but well, you are going for good food, not for a fancy setting — if you want a fancy setting prego is down the road. Overall recommended and the tables have colouring in pencils and paper for the children, or adults, depending on your maturity level ;)

I was introduced to the The Food Room by a Ponsonby local, and probably would have zero knowledge of its existence otherwise. Its tucked away between Pumpkin Patch and Thai Me Up on Ponsonby Road, with a car park directly in front of it. The pies are probably the second best in Auckland I believe, although still a fair way behind Forbes. I am even a fan of the ‘Huffer’, which is a Mexican filling more or less. There is a great combo if dining in, a pie and a salad for around $ 10 — the crispy noodles in the salad are everyone’s favourite. I regularly bypass The Food Room unfortunately, as I usually get Bird On Wire or Fatima’s if I am on Ponsonby but am left kicking myself afterwards — for having forgotten about it, not because the other too are no good(quite the opposite). There is a car park right in front of The Food Room which you can squeeze into, eliminating the usual nightmare associated with Ponsonby, being parking.

Get a bloody pie. I mean, that’s why you’re visiting The Food Room. They’re not cheap but they are worth the average $ 7.50 price tag. The location isn’t too hot, it’s kind of back off the road and next to a dirty liquor store, but you’re not there for the ambiance. If you’re anti-pies, you can opt for a salad or a sandwich — both are very good and pretty much everything you can get can be taken away. Service is above average, I’d give it four stars but man that location just makes me feel bad about life.

With a reputation for having the ‘best pies in Auckland’, I had high expectations for the Foodroom and I wasn’t disappointed. I ordered a classic mince and cheese pie and it was perfect. Real mince, a good amount of cheese and thick(but not gluggy) pastry — it was exactly what I was after. The only turn off was the price. At over $ 7 a pie, The Foodroom isn’t a cheap option but the quality of the food is undeniable. As well as serving great pies, their salads are deliciously fresh. The Foodroom also make big, full sandwiches which the staff are happy to cut and wrap for you to takeaway. It is these little things that make The Foodroom stand out; the staff are very personable and genuine — they always ask about your day and are happy to accommodate your requirements, with gluten free and takeaway options being available. Tip: If you go towards the end of the day, the food is often cheaper as they can’t keep it until the next day. So put a smile on your face and you may just get your muffin free of charge!

The Food Room is pretty easy to pass by and not notice. Partially because it’s buried behind its own car park and the infinitely imposing walls of it’s two neighbors: on the left is the presumably evil, rich person establishment«Prego», and on the right is the phenomenally evil, child drapery«Pumpkin Patch». The Food Room is nestled in between, with its sister shop(the scummiest liquor store in the world). It’s too bad because the food at The Food Room is pretty sensational. Everybody raves about their pies. I’ve only tried the vegetarian ones, and they were pretty good, but aparently the meat ones are ‘out of this friggen world’. They certainly smell really great. Last time I went there I got a savoury scone and it was absolutely the best scone I’ve ever eaten. Had to take a star off because the customer service was pretty abhorrent when I went there last.
