I was in Auckland for business so was dining alone, which is always a little awkward. The friendly staff at Tony’s made me feel very welcome however and were happy to chat with me. The food was good, the steak being excellent and the vegetables a bit average which seems to be the case with a lot of steakhouses. Overall experience was great — I would recommend Tony’s and will visit again the next time I’m in Auckland.

Three choices for steaks does not a steak house make. Paper napkins, paper table covering, and what appeared to be metal folding tables created a distinctly non-steak house experience. My steak was okay and the service got the job done but definitely not what I’m used to at upscale U.S. steak houses.

Literally one of the best experiences we’ve had to date! A genuine steak house with prices to match their food and service. Great place to have a great feed and catch up. Entrees for us(mother and I) consisted of ½ dozen oysters, and seafood chowder: good. Followed by medium rare Scotch and Venison: Absolutely perfectly cooked. Finished with their special Plum crumble: perfect! Did we mention the service? Super friendly and not naggy at all. An absolutely stellar night. Will be back.

It’s a bit confusing having two steak houses in the city both called Tony’s, and both heavy on the brown interiors, and brown on the plate, and brown in the glass, but never fear: both give you a pretty authentic ye olde ‘70s steakhouse experience.(There is/was some relation between the two but I’m not sure what it is I’m afraid). I like to go to this one for a $ 15 lunch and pretend I’m some sort of ‘80s ad exec who is going out for big lavish lunches and cutting deals half cut: there’s something about the heavy warm interior and big meals that encourages this. This is totally one of the places that there’s no surprises at: you know what you’re getting, and that’s usually a good thing.

Tonys is one of the old and established spots in the Auckland CBD for businesses lunches and after work meals. But also a good spot for birthdays, dates, etc. Tonys is about good old-fashioned steak in cosy surroundings. The décor is straight from the 70’s and that is probably because the place has been around since then(actually 1968). But the Tony’s restaurants do steak better than anyone, so let’s stick to that for now. Choose the type, size, and how you would like your steak done and prepare to be impressed. There is range of sauces available(for example pepper or blue cheese), fries or potatoes, salad or veggies on the side. The service at Tonys on Lorne Street is fantastic, you will be promptly seated, be quickly offered a drink, and waitresses will be on hand to make sure you do not run dry. I’ve been going on about steak, but they also do a fish of the day, and various chicken meals. Lamb Shanks are on the menu and there is a delicious(huge) cheese burger. The restaurant is open for lunch then closes for a few hours then they open again for dinner. If you went here regularly you would very soon be recognised and welcomed. The 15 dollar lunch menu is well worth a try if you are wanting something a bit more substantial than sushi!

When I was a kid it was a tradition in our family to go to Tony’s for birthday dinners, including mine. I’m not sure why, as a small child my tastes were not refined, and I would have been just as happy at Pizza Hut or Valentine’s as I was at this classy establishment. Going back as an older person(I’m not quite willing to say grown-up) I can see why we went all those years — it was entirely for my parents’ sake, not mine. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it as a child, but as someone old enough to appreciate good steak and the beer that goes with it I enjoy it even more. I don’t know that much has changed over the years, but that’s part of the appeal.
