Oh Umi Sushi, it was a sad day indeed when I no longer worked just a few mins away from you. Your $ 1 sushi, being made in front of me as I lined up, your array of sauces; your cute signs; your spinach and cheese balls which I really cannot believe are Japanese but are still very very delicious; your tempura and my favourite, the little foil parcels of teriyaki salmon for the princely sum of $ 2.50; all of this adds up to being one of the best lunchtime experiences you can have in the central city. They are also one of the few places that caters for the late luncher; you can rock up here at 2.30 and still take your pick from everything.

The thing I love about a sushi place like Umi Sushi is that you can pick and mix all of your favourite sushi fillings and flavours into one lunch-sized serving. In saying that, when all of the deliciousness is on display I often get sucked into ordering way more than I need. From experience, the fried options, which look so tempting on display, are often a little disappointing and greasy, and the sushi and sashimi is usually the best bet. And you can still get a little freaky with your sushi fillings too, fear not. The queues can get long around lunch time so try and go early to avoid the rush(and nab the freshest sushi at the same time!)

This is a sushi place like no other. You never really know what kind of weird, wonderful and delicious creations they’ll have to offer. There’s a long bench filled with all kinds of sushi. My favourite is their skewers. They deep fry battered chicken and then drizzle it in the most amazing sauces. Probably not the healthiest kind of sushi, but YOLO! It’s good. You definitely need to go in with an open mind but they also have the stock standard sushi if you’re not up for the craziness. They also do Asian style donuts that are so yum, but again not really all that healthy. Every time I go here there’s always a huge line it’s always really fast moving which is great for if you were supposed to be back at the office five minutes ago.

While I’m a fan of Umiya Sushi on the corner of Lorne and Wellesley(which is the newest branch), the one time I tried Umi it was horrible. I was so disappointed! I think perhaps I just had bad luck, because it was recommended to me, but then part of serving great food is doing it consistently, right? I had the ‘sandwich’ style sushi and the rice was overly dry, even stale tasting. On top of that, the fillings were mushy and sad. I don’t think I’ll be trying Umi again in a hurry, and with Umiya so nearby, I can stick with my favourite.

What’s not to love about a long bench full of sushi, tempura and other Japanese delicacies? Umi sushi has to be one of the best places to go for lunch. Its sushi is super cheap at around $ 1 a piece and there is just so much variety! My favourites are the deep fried rice balls, the seaweed salad sushi and the angry chicken! I like to go a bit earlier, around 11.45 to beat the lunch rush and sometimes go even earlier to get the sushi when it’s the freshest. Although it’s easy just to stick with the sushi you know and love, there are some more adventurous options as well that I like to try. The smoked eel is quite nice and so is the fish egg.
