Tiki Hut is the sort of joint that’s perfect for starting off that big night or coming for a quiet one after work. It’s a humble wee bar, very casual — it has the feel of being in a wooden shed, which I find endearing given it’s Viaduct surroundings which are a bit polished and a bit sterile by comparison. It’s unpretentious in a pretentious place. For that reason, Tiki Hut is where I feel most comfortable and most relaxed in the Viaduct. It’s also probably down to the view and the always chilled out beats from the DJs. If you manage to get yourself a table overlooking the water, there aren’t many more relaxed joints to enjoy good company over drinks than Tiki Bar. Strongly recommend if you’re as chilled out as me.

I love the Tiki Hut! It’s a fab spot for a number of reasons; 1. The supreme view. Overlooking the harbour and the busy thoroughfare below, it’s a perfect place to people watch. I wouldn’t advise rating gals as they walk by like the table of tipsy dudes next to us did though. They were promptly told off by some other patrons with«don’t rate people if you’re a 2⁄10 at best mate» ha, buuuurn. 2. The music. On Fridays George DJs spin the decks, which is a sweet way to kick off the weekend, especially if the sun is out! 3. The food. Tapas have to be my favourite and there are all sorts of treats you can order for the table and share(or not). The Tiki Hut a great place to head after work on a Friday and usually carries into the wee hours if you have the stamina

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Tiki Hut was an add-on bar to the Kermadec complex upstairs, because that’s pretty much exactly what it is. But don’t let the name fool you, there’s no cheesy tiki decorations or flaming torches to be seen. That being said, it occupies a primo slice of real estate on the Viaduct, right next to code, and definitely check out Quay Street Yacht Club on Saturday afternoons. You can find a great selection of live local DJ’s, and the odd international, spinning the decks to entertain the crowds while the ice cold drinks slide past you tonsils. I like the place, it’s much more chilled out and less pretentious than a lot of the other Viaduct bars, and the crowd is choice too. A great option to enjoy the Viaduct area, without some of the attitude that can come with it.

This is a very small bar on Auckland’s Viaduct, beneath Kermadec restaurant. It is a casual set up, with plastic seats. I had to read the cocktail descriptions from a handwritten A4… There was a DJ spinning some tunes and we were told a house night was going to be happening into the early hours. The bar staff were friendly and our cocktails were tasty. Overall the bar just wasn’t really my kind of scene. If you can get one of the tables looking out over the viaduct, however — what a view. The perfect spot to sit and watch as the yachts come in and people walk by.

I’ve been to the Tiki Hut twice in two days. I had walked past a number of times and thought very little of this small bar next to Soul, but noticed that it was consistently busy and there were a distinct lack of tikis on display. Having ventured in I found it to be one of the more relaxed, beachy bars on the viaduct with live music/DJs and good tunes playing both times I have been. Also of note the tapas are pretty good coming from the Kermadec kitchen above, and the balcony is an excellent spot for people watching.
