Wow. At first I was unsure, but by the end, I was convinced — the quality of both coffee and baked goods here is top-notch. The pedigree is impressive. The owner of the café worked at Workshop, one of London’s top third wave café(mini) chains. And the Leeds Street Bakery certainly looks the part. The food I had — avocado on toast, cookie — was uniformly excellent. Decent bread makes such a difference to everything, and so it does here. Yummy, The coffee was fantastic too — a Mexican Aeropress and then a large flat white. If I was being picky, I would say that the mug of my filter should have been preheated, but it’s forgivable. And the staff and service deserve a shout-out too. The owner was really friendly, asking me what cafes I liked in London, and indulging my questions about the milk they use and the aprons they wear(I wondered if it was a Kiwi thing, as in London I’ve only seen that style at Kiwi-run café Iris & June). Likewise, the service. Again, they shunned the London approach of leaving everything to the customer, instead giving me some taste options including fruity and chocolatey to choose from, and then they picked the bean from that. Great stuff. The music played is fairly non-invasive. The main soundtrack for me came from the hipster at the next table denouncing the behaviour of his ex. Tack on the free wifi and cool interior, and Red Rabbit Coffee Co is well worth a visit.

Beautiful space tucked away in the winding side-streets of Wellington. This is probably described as a third-wave specialty coffee shop, focused on quality of bean and excellence in preparation. While my aeropress coffee was lovely, the service was disinterested and dismissive, even when I asked about origins and flavour profile of the coffees on offer. I don’t want to second-guess the reasons for this approach, only to say that friendly, open and welcoming service often means much more than the quality of the final product — for me anyhow.

Like the equipment, very interesting to see people roasting in the shop. I enjoy their coffee, I wish it didn’t feel as stiff.

Toast up! was the first sound I heard when entering the Red Rabbit bakery, followed by the strong aroma of coffee roasting on site. Located in an alleyway at the back of Leed St, the fit out is simple and unpresumptuous. The friendly baristas bring a wealth of knowledge and creativity to the art of making a good cup, by disregards the traditional espresso methods. Therefore, expect some good as gold coffee. The menu is itty bitty, all complimented with toast, but sometimes carbs is all you crave for brunch. I opted for the ham and swiss cheese and pickle on toast which came out on a slab of warm homemade bread and generous fillings. It was enough for two people to share, but what the heck! It reminded me of something my mum would make, mix that with a farm like setting and you get the picture — no frilly gourmet stuff and deliciously filling. The RR is perfect for coffee enthusiasts or someone who needs a strong brew to get them through the day.

Great coffee. Local roasted beans. Small snacks. They also do all the cold slow drip coffee options. Bakery next door. Hidden location. Very hip.
