Everything looked and smelled delicious at Whenuapai Bakery. However having heard about their 2012 Gold in the Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards I headed for the pie counter. Category winner, Steak and Cheese, is the pie I ordered, at $ 4.00 it is a little beauty. The pastry is delicately flakey and perfectly crisp, the filling is perfectly flavoured and balanced. Well deserving of its Gold accolade. There is a whole range of other pie flavours like bacon and egg, potato top, chicken, mince etc and you can bet they would also taste delicious. You can order main meals from the blackboard menu if you prefer non counter fare. Their range of sweet cakes and treats looked fabulous, in all a great place to grab a bite. If you are not on the run, then relax in the restaurant as they have plenty of seating and it is clean and modern.

In my opinion it takes a lot to stand out as a bakery. Bread, sandwiches, pies and the odd muffin. They are usually much of a muchness. So when I first chowed into a bun from the Whenuapai Bakehouse I was very pleasantly surprised. The food is so stuffed with goodness and very well prepared you never know what each bites going to hit you with… lettuce, tomato, egg, creamy mayo, chicken, avocado it’s all in there! And don’t even get me started on the pies. This bakery has won a gold award for pies for the last two years and its obvious why. They are delicious. My favourite from this little gem is the vegetarian bagel. That is when I’m trying to be healthy and not launching for a pie as soon as I walk in.
