1516 Brewing Company

I’ve been living in Vienna for almost two years now, but I never really paid much attention to this place until recently. I’ve visited this place a couple of times in the past, but only for drinks with friends and colleagues, but just a few weeks ago while going out, I tried some of the BBQ spareribs, splitting the racks amongst us in the group. In the past, I was a bit wary of ordering food here since I still have that impression that pub food is usually mediocre at best. However, their ribs are delicious! After trying a couple of them, I was thinking to myself, «where have you been all this time?!». The ribs are moist, fall-​off-​the-​bone tender, and with just the right amount of sauce covering it. They don’t drown the ribs in sauce like other places, and they will also give you a little bit more barbecue sauce and garlic yogurt sauce on the side, to dip the ribs as well as your potato wedges in. Alright, to be absolutely fair, of course you cannot compare this to Kansas City barbecue (because obviously this place is not there), but then again, most rib joints in Vienna have been pretty good, in spite of the fact that I’m not usually a big fan of Austrian cuisine, which is generally quite bland to me. But if there’s one thing they know how to prepare well in this country, it’s pork ribs!
I’ve also tried their super hot and spicy habanero wings. I’m no novice when it comes to eating spicy food (hey, I’m a Buffalo Wild Wings Challenge veteran back in the states, when I did this in Kansas City after an old friend egged me on!). Indeed they were quite hot, but nothing that I couldn’t handle. And I was able to finish all the wings, no problem. The only thing I didn’t like was they drowned the wings in sauce, which is a big pet peeve of mine. I really find this unnecessary; it’s a waste of sauce, it’s messy, and you get the same effect with a light coat of sauce instead of using it excessively. This goes for spareribs as well; they got that right here but they should do the same for the their habanero chicken wings.
One more thing I really disliked at 1516 was the cole slaw that was served with the spareribs. Too much mayonnaise and the cabbage was soggy. Personally I’d substitute either regular sauerkraut or even a side salad instead of the slaw.
I really like the microbrew beers here. They’re flavorful and come in a good variety of sizes. Really good stuff.
Other than a couple of the above flaws I’ve mentioned, I highly recommend this place. The staff is friendly and helpful, the food is great, and the beers are cold and delicious. And they also show sports events on television here so the ambience is also great, whether you’re here to have dinner or to watch soccer or football, you are guaranteed to enjoy this place.

we didn’t eat here but stopped in for a drink and the hipster quotient was astounding. the place was packed but we got a table and the service was ok, we ended up leaving after one drink. I’m giving it a high rating for popularity on a weeknight, it must be great if that many hip people are digging it

Love everything about this bar from the food to the barkeepers ! There is always a good mood here! Always happy to be here and have one or two of the pitchers which are awesome!

What a nice pub in Wien! With many options of good and craft beer, the place is always full. The menu is also good, with vegetarian options as well. We went there twice and now we are fans.
It’s a pitty we don’t have a bar like this in Brasil.

Every time we’re in Vienna, we stop in nearly once a day, either for a beer or a full meal. Very hip crowd (probably too hip as I get older and they stay the same age). Since it’s winter, no outside searing for people watching, but the smoke free area upstairs is perfect.
The real reason for this updated review is their Christmas beer, the Biere de Noël. It’s amazing. The spicy flavor is truly something special. The closest I can compare to is a Dogfish Head «ancient» ale or 916’s Lebanese Pale Ale. Whatever. It’s a Christmas miracle. Go now. Before I drink it all.

I know it’s an American craft brewery through-​and-​through, but I don’t care because 1516 is just so damn AMAZING.
The burger. The burger people. I can’t believe how good it is; it’s good for a burger in the states. Best I’ve ever had in Europe outside London. Not to mention the genius and taste mastery of the pulled pork sandwich.
And we haven’t even gotten to the beers! They’ve got a couple of staples, but there’s also a handful of seasonal brews at any given time. I had a pint of the «Rusty N’Ale» which was a shocking offspring of ale and hefeweizen that somehow worked from first sip to last swig.

Best beer in town hands down. Home brewed IPAs and many more. Food is amazing. Have eaten here many times and it is well worth it. Ribs and pulled pork is a favorite of mine and is always consistent.

This spot is good for large groups who want to go out and get a drink. You can find better food at another spot. Maybe I didn’t have enough beer.

Place was quite empty. Looks like its quite nice tourist trap. Very expensive Beer and food, maybe only I am poor. We had here just few Beers, it was quite enough for becouse of the prices.

Das 1516 kann man am ehesten als amerikanischen oder britischen Pub beschreiben. Insgesamt ist die Atmosphäre recht stimmig, allerdings waren die Lichtverhältnisse im Inneren etwas schummrig.
Die verschiedenen Biere werden zu einem vernünftigen Preis angeboten. Entsprechend der angloamerikanischen Pubatmosphähre werden keine österreichischen Biere geboten sondern verschiedene «1516 Brews» oder auch «Indian Pale Ale». Letzteres habe ich probiert und es hat genauso geschmeckt wie ich IPAs aus den USA kenne. Zur Stärkung gibt es z.B. verschiedene Burger, Sandwiches oder auch Chicken Wings. Wir waren voll auf zufrieden und werden sicherlich wieder mal ins 1516 gehen.

Non smoking is upstairs and ok. But the awesome seating is on the street — and few there were smoking.
My only complaint is the beer is not ice cold. (Suggestion, put some mugs in the freezer. When someone with an American orders, use those.)

Also bin jetzt da, und ich kann euch sagen so schnell war ich nie fertig mit dem essen aber im positiven Sinne. Hab ma das Pulled Prok Sandwich genommen und war erstaunt. Meine Freundin wollte noch ein Foto machen aber bis sie das Handy ruasgeholt hat war das Sandwich schon weg, sorry Leute.
Ich würde es jedem empfehlen der aus BBQ steht authentisch wie in Amerika. Geht’s hin Leute

Awesome! The most memorable meal I’ve had yet in Europe. As a North Carolina boy, I’m very picky about my BBQ so believe me when I tell you that the huge rack of ribs they serve are fantastic. I somehow finished the entire rack along with about half of the potato wedges and a liter of beer. It is easily enough food for 2 people. They were tender and tasty and just perfect. They also had a great selection of good beers at reasonable prices. The service staff were friendly and attentive. They had a separate non-​smoking section upstairs which was very pleasant. Next time I got to Vienna I want to eat here every night.

Tolles Bier, wenn auch stark überteuert. In der letzten Zeit hat der Service wieder an Qualität zu genommen. Für einen Nichtraucher etwas grenzwertig, da unten in besserer Lage die Raucher residieren dürfen. Freue mich auf den Sommer — wirklich großer Gastgarten.

Gute Burger und eine tolle Bierauswahl, das könnte das komprimierte Fazit für das 1516 sein. Gerade am Wochenende ist es aber häufig für meinen Geschmack zu voll und zu laut. Wenn man im Sommer das Glück hat, einen Tisch im Gastgarten zu ergattern der ideale Ort für einen netten Abend mitten in der Stadt, auch wenn die Shisha-​Schwaden, die vom benachbarten Schesch Besch gelegentlich stören.
Die Speisenauswahl ist zuweilen überraschend. Pub-​spezifische Klassiker wie Burger, Ribs und Wings treffen auf der Karte auf Würstl und Gulasch. Diese Auswahl geht aber nicht wie so häufig zu Lasten der Qualität, Neben den Burgern sind z.B. die pikanten Paprika-​Bratwürstel sehr zu empfehlen. Die Currywust schmeckt zwar, hat aber mit dem Original aus dem Norden nur wenig gemein.
Zur Bierauswahl muss nicht viel gesagt werden. Die selbstgebrauten, hauseigenen Bierspezialitäten sind ein El Dorado für Biertrinker.
Den Abzug gibt es allein für die Atmosphäre im Innenbereich.

Atmosphere, food and beer selection make this a great go-​to for any evening. The slow cooked ribs (from the special’s menu) are currently the best and most consistent in the city. Much better than their regular ribs. much. much. The pulled pork sandwich is another winner here! The beer is quite nice, and ‘black and tan’ is my go-​to. In the summer, the patio is great! Skip the upstairs if it’s hot! It really is quite stuffy and the AC?! does nothing for the space.

Best ribs BUT you must look for them as low and slow smoked. NOT the usual ribs. Other than that, great pale ale’s, and awesome food, when you look at items like pulled pork sandwich or the special sausages from local farms. Nice patio in the summer, and don’t believe the A/​C advertisement, as the place is hot as hell inside.

War gestern zum 3. mal vor Ort und habe mir (wie so oft) einen weißen Spritzer genehmigt! ;-) Diesen konnte ich auch überhaupt nicht bemängeln.
Also ich mag das Lokal zwar ganz gerne und die Spritzer sind gut, aber das Essen finde ich nicht so überzeugend.
Habe vor kurzem Hot Chicken Wings mit Potato Wedges gegessen und bin leider nicht in Euphorie verfallen. Die Wedges waren eher eine «lasche» Geschichte und die Wings definitiv nicht «Hot» im Sinne von scharf. (Bin, aber auch kein Maßstab — Inderin haha)
Habe auch mal so ein riesen Sandwich Teil von einem Freund gekostet, ja ganz gut — aber auch nicht — woooooooooow!
Dann sollten die Preise halt auch dementsprechend angepasst sein, ich mein die Portionen sind zwar meist sehr groß, aber wie gesagt — mein Lieblingsrestaurant wird’s nicht.
Aber, wenn man mal was trinken gehen möchte in mehr oder weniger «amerikanischer» Umgebung (viele Kellner sprechen nur Englisch) dann ist es ganz nett! :)

I came here several times with friends. We were all big fans of 1516’s beers, which made for easy day drinking. In fact, no summer happy hour was complete without a 1516 Shandy and an order of thick potato wedges. If you’re staying for dinner, then you must try the 1516 Curry Wurst. There are also some Americanized options, which is good for that friend who won’t get out of his comfort zone.

I was visiting Vienna on business and a coworker recommended this place. I stopped by a few times, downstairs was smokey and I didn’t want to smell like an ashtray the rest of the night. So both times sat upstairs at the bar.
While discussing the various bars with coworkers, one commented that the owner hires waitresses based on the way the look, not necessarily any sort of waitressing skills. I could see this as some of the waitresses slight a bit out of it, though were easy on the eyes. We sat at the upstairs bar, so we had no problem ordering drinks, and the pretty bartender there was plenty friendly.

1516 gibt es jetzt schon 15 Jahre — stets gute Biere und preiswertes Essen. Derzeit ein tolles Witbier, sonst der stets verlässliche Hop Devil. Wäre gerne täglich da…

Lässiges Irish-​Pub im 1. Bezirk.
Durch die zentrale Lage war selbst an einem Montag Abend recht viel los, wir haben jedoch auf Anhieb einen Tisch bekommen und trotz der Menge an Gäste wird man relativ rasch bedient.
Das hausgebraute und namensgebenede 1516 Bier erfrischte sogar die Nicht-​Bier-​Trinker unserer Gruppe (vielleicht lag es auch nur an den recht warmen Wetter ;)
Der Preis für einen Krug (1,5l) geht mit 11,10 € für mich in Ordnung.

It took me one year and a half but I finally made it to 1516!
After passing through the smoking area downstairs up to the non-​smoking one upstairs, we spend quite a nice moment in this international beer local.
The food is very good there, especially if you feel hungry in the middle of the night! Lots of burgers (even a very tasty vegetarian one!), club sandwich, ribs and so on. They also have plenty of beers, so that any beer lover will feel very happy there!
But beware, on a Friday night, it is very busy and can be very, very loud!

Burger was a bust.
I went to 1516 for lunch in order to try the burger that was recommended to me. I am being nice and giving 3 stars regardless of the burger. The burger deserves a 2. The menu states it is cooked medium, and I also clarified with the waitress, who spoke english and german, and she said, yes, medium. It came out quite fast after ordering, and way over cooked. That tells me it was prepared long before I ordered it and was waiting in the kitchen to be served. No thank you. Plus, the bun was stale and broke apart while I ate it and made a nice mess on my plate. I could have also done without the «cocktail» sauce on the side.
The restaurant itself is cool and trendy with lots of non-​smoking seating and lots of diverse menu items. They serve Pepsi not Coke and give free glasses of water:) I will try it again with different food and revamp my review if necessary.

Touri-​Brauerei im Wiener Zentrum, die Bedienung kann Englisch, die Speisekarte auch.
Das Bier ist ganz gut. Die Speisen sind in Ordnung, aber die Auswahl ist ziemlich beliebig. Vermisst habe ich typisch österreichisches Essen oder Gemütlichkeit.
Wer Deutsch kann, ist anderswo in Wien erheblich besser aufgehoben.

If you’re tired of pints of Ottakringer, head to 1516 for some of the best beer in town. Their house beer is always fresh, tasty, and very drinkable. They’ve also got a seasonal beer menu with rotating specialties they bring in from around Europe. A lot of their beer are American-​style ales, which is just the thing for a homesick expat missing his beer.
They also have excellent pub food: wings, ribs, burgers, and lots more.
During the summer, try to get a table on the front patio. Year-​round, the upstairs section is non-​smoking. They can handle large groups, just call ahead for a reservation.
Conveniently located near Karlsplatz, heading to 1516 is never a bad idea!

Super Bier! Die Ripperl sahen klasse aus, aber wir waren leider schon etwas spät dran. Oben im Nichtraucherbereich sitzt man ziemlich eng beieinander, stört mich aber nicht. Der Besuch hat mich irgendwie an spanische kleine Pubs erinnert, es wurde keine Musik gespielt, war aber trotzdem sehr laut und die Leute extrem ausgelassen. Spitze! Der Service war jetzt nicht so der Brüller, aber man bekommt was man will.

Ein durchwachsenes Erlebnis. Das Bier scheint wirklich gut zu sein. So zumindest das Urteil meiner männlichen Begleiter. Beim Essen darf man aber keine großen Ansprüche stellen. Ich hatte den Chico Chicken Salad mit Avocado. Das Hähnchen war zu lange gebraten, also viel zu trocken. Es gab ganze vier Stückchen Avocado im Salat und die Soße war eigentlich nur Sour Cream ohne sonstige Gecshmackszutaten. Und leider viel zu viel davon. Von den Potatoe Wedges (oder der Aioli) bekam man Bauchschmerzen. Einzig der Chili-​Leberkäse war lecker. Aber hausgemacht war der bestimmt nicht ;)

Für jeden Liebhaber des Gerstensaftes ein Muss in Wien. Da kann man sich in Ruhe mal durch das ein oder andere Bierchen probieren. Mir schmecken nicht alle Sorten aber es gibt ja genug Alternativen. Zum Essen kann ich nicht viel sagen, aber niemals vergessen, drei Bier sind ein Essen.

Sorry to say that I was slightly underwhelmed by this bar.
Went into it imagining a mecca to beer but what I found was 2 or 3 beers on tap and 1 bottled (alcohol-​free) beer. ??? Have I missed something, did I get the wrong menu, am I in the right place?
Was told good things about this place and the reviews on Unilocal were positive but for me there was nothing too special about this place. Sure it has a cool pub atmosphere and décor, sure the wedges are pretty good, sure the waitress was very friendly and efficient, but so are a lot of places in Vienna.
It lacks a charm or selling point that a lot of other bars in the area have, so for me it was a pleasant experience but there is no real reason to return. (Unless as I say I have been mistaken…)

Super coole Bar im 1. so schön trashig, aber nicht zu heavy, freundlicher Service, Potato Wedges für 4 Euro, hammer lecker, hammer viel. Am besten teilen!

Oben ist der Nichtraucherbereich aber da setzen wir uns nie hin, komischerweise macht es mir nix aus, unten eingeräuchert zu werden um dann am Ende des Abends wie ein Aschenbecher zu stinken. Ist schon doof und eklig, aber so isses nunmal.
Einfach mal hingehen und selber schauen, wenn man es gerne down to earth mag, dann ist man hier richtig!

Ein Bierlokal mit internationalem Flair und entsprechenden Publium mitten im ersten Bezirk. Hat mich ehrlich gesagt nicht vom Hocker gerissen.

Im Rahmen der OARGE Unilocaltour haben wir dem 1516 einen Besuch abgestattet und ich kann festhalten, das ist ein Laden ganz nach meinem Geschmack. Unten ist es sehr voll, verraucht und eher ungemütlich, falls man nicht in Partylaune ist, oben das genaue Gegenteil, man sitzt auch Holztischen bei düsterem Licht und genießt sein Bierchen. Das wird selbst gebraut und schmeckt ziemlich lecker, auch wenn es in eigenartigen Mengeneinheiten verkauft wird (0,4l).
Essen muss noch getestet werden, wenn das auch gut ist dann rück ich noch einen fünften Stern raus.

Durch einen Zufall bin ich auf das 1516 gestoßen, als ich durch den ersten Bezirk gelaufen bin. Drinnen erwartet einen eine gute Pub-​Stimmung mit vielen Fernsehern, die verschiedenste Sportevents übertragen, einer langen Bar und natürlich großen Bierfässen. Die Hauseigene Biermarke hat sogar mir geschmeckt, obwohl ich normalerweise eher auf Radler ausweiche.
Am Wochenende kann es schon mal so voll werden, dass es schwer wird einen Platz zu suchen. Das Publikum ist bunt gemischt und die Kellner extrem nett und zweisprachig.
Für jeden, der ein Stück Australien in Wien erleben will, die richtige Adresse.

Serveur pas particulièrement aimable. J’ai pris des wedges au cheddar et à l’aioli, et elles étaient supra-​lourdes. En même temps, je l’avais cherché.

Der Name ist Programm. Also die Zahl. Denn 1516 ist das Ursprungsjahr, oder wie man sagt, vom deutschen Reinheitsgebot, das festschreibt, was alles ins Bier kommt. Hopfen, Wasser und Malz — Gott erhalt’s. Wie wahr, wie wahr!
Wieso dieses Lokal aber vom österreichischen Bierpapst als das beste Bierpub bezeichnet wird, verstehe ich nicht. So umwerfend ist das Bier auch nicht. Aber vielleicht hab’ ich auch nur das falsche genommen. Das Ambiente entspricht im Grunde genommen einem klassischen Pub. Die eine kleine Theke oben im ersten Stock finde ich recht herzig. Aber im Endeffekt? Naja.
Das Essen ist ganz gut. Die Wedges kommen in einer recht großen Portion. Nur bin ich halt kein Wedges Mensch. Vor allen Dingen, wenn ich knapp nach der Hälfte der Portion das Gefühl bekommen, diese Erdäpfelspalterln werden immer mehr in meinem Mund.
Aber es ist trotzdem meist g’steckt voll und man bekommt nur schwer einen Platz.

1516 — «Fifteen Sixteen» ist ein tolles Restaurant, amerikanischer Speisen. Wie Sie sich vorstellen können, bekommt man hier neben tollen Hamburger, auch geniale Salate, oder Chicken Wings, der besonderen Art. Nebenbei, wird hier auch hauseigenes Bier gebraut. In Österreich ist das keine große Kunst, doch auf jeden Fall ein Versuch wert.
In diesem zweistöckigen Lokal, kann man aber auch nur Bier trinken (mit kleinen Snacks), wo Sportevents ausgestrahlt werden. Habe auch schon anderes als Fußball gesehen. Generell eine Location, wo «Zwang» möglichst klein geschrieben wird
Prinzipiell, sind die Kellnerinnen (meist Damen/​Mädchen) Könner, mehrerer Sprachen und sehr nett (wohlbenommen). Habe eines von ihnen, schon arabisch sprechen hören! Und oft bekommt man das Essen schneller serviert, als man glauben möchte. Dieses ist übrigens sehr köstlich und probierenswert, aber nichts für Diätopfer des 20. Jahrhunderts (vielleicht deswegen der 1516?).
Wenn es einige Lokale mit tollen Burger in Wien gibt, dann ist dieses hier einer der Top-​Favoriten!
