Terrific fondue restaurant in the heart of old Fribourg. We arrived around 745 for dinner thru the winding narrow streets. Located on just the other side of river, the fog had already set in and gave the town an eerie appearance. With the old architecture and stone bridge the only thing missing were some heads on spikes at the bridge(I’m kidding). It really was a beautiful evening. Our large group was led upstairs to the second floor which had been reserved. We were provided some white wine upon entry along with some good bread. The appetizer were plates of smoked meat, along with some gerkins and pickled pearl onions(very good). But the star was the fondue… wow. Some different bread was brought out along with some small cooked white potatoes and a red wine. Then the steaming cauldrons of cheese. My Swiss hosts informed me the fondue was half Gruyère and half Vacherin cheese(a very local cheese) mixed with a bit of white wine. Absolutely outstanding and unlike anything I have had before. After the fondue was a delicious dessert which was a hardened meringue topped with fruit. I am not sophisticated enough to know what the name was but it was very good. Tasted almost like buttered popcorn. Our French speaking Swiss hostesses were exceptionally polite and accommodating and kept wine glasses and bread baskets full. A terrific experience and if I ever make it back to Fribourg I would love to come back here. Additionally I wish I had more time here to explore the old town.
