Ah-Hua

Tintenfisch gebraten mit Knoblauch war eine perfekte Wahl für mich. Tintenfisch schön weich und nicht zäh. Bedienung ein wenig chaotisch aber nie unfreundlich. Ein bisschen eng ist es schon, man darf also keine Platzangst haben. Aber eine tolle Atmosphäre.

I probably never ate such bad food in Zürich. The fried shrimp as starter were horribly tasteless, they had the consistency of truck tires more than anything else.
The main dish was just a little better than that. I had a red curry with coconut soup and pork. The meat tasted too old.
And in the end I was even astonished how high the bill was. I really don’t recommend this place and I can’t figure out why it’s always so packed!!!

We were extremely happy that our friend brought us her some great Thai Asian food. We’ve lived in Zurich for almost two years and unfortunate have not been able to get our fix of good Thai Asian food at a fair price.

The prices and portion size are fair here and make for a tasty night out. We had an appetizer of spring rolls and fish cakes, followed by green curry soup with meat, pad Thai with beef and bok choy and the glass noodle salad with shrimp, lemongrass and cashews for me. All dishes exceeded our expectations for flavor and we left deeply satisfied. Cant wait for our next meal here.
Thinking of going? Make a reservation, as the place is popular and does stay busy. But service was still fast and friendly.

Zur die Chefin muss ich einfach sagen sie ist nicht anderst als ein Geizhals. Die Chefin macht wirklich nicht anderst als nur die fleissige Mitarbeiter/​innen was sie auch schätzen sollte «motzen» & «beschimpfen» also ich als Gäst findet diese Situation jedes mal sehr unangenehm.
Die hat wirklich Glück das sie so gute Mitarbeiter/​innen bei sich hatte was es heutzutage nicht mehr selbstverständlich ist.
Ich bin so zusagen Stammgast und weil ich mal den Rechnung mal genauer anschauen möchte. Muss man sofort Gefühl haben das man ihr beschissen möchte. Also ich bin mir nicht mehr sicher ob ich diese Asoziale Restaurant nochmals betreten werde.

I went to the other one. This time I went on midday with some colleagues, without reservation and we ended up in a table far in the former. For some reason the waiter moved us into a different place because they judged the first one dangerous, the table was wobbly… The service is not amazingly fast, but the food is decently good and the prices are fine. One thing I do not like with the menu is that I cannot understand how the menu works and it is a pain to browse through it, I don’t know, it may be me, but it didn’t really make sense the way things are ordered (it’s not like in your typical Asian restaurant with categories, it’s just a string of number). It made it quite difficult for me to find something vegetarian that way, though I prevailed in the end.
Close to the counter there is a box with the old candy I used to get when I was a kid, so I stole a few when I left, it is always good to bring back some nostalgia.

Mann-​o-​mann hier muss man definitiv reservieren, bevor man hingeht. Selbst um 21:00 ist das Restaurant rappelvoll! Für meinen Geschmack zu eng gestuhlt und der Lärmpegel strapaziert nicht nur das Gehör, sondern auch die Stimmbänder. Hat man dann einmal Platz gefunden, ist man leicht überfordert mit der riesigen Auswahl auf der Speisekarte.
Das essen ist fantastisch und die Bedienung freundlich, wenn auch nicht gerade schnell (kein Wunder bei so vielen Gästen!)

I’ve been to this place many times and we always ate very well. (+) Good variety, lots of flavors, reasonable prices. (-) relatively busy lunch & dinner, you sit very close to other people, moderately slow service. All in all I recommend it, and go there often for the food not the ambiance — dont get me wrong, the staff is nice though.
As far as what we ordered, my wife got — Tom yam, a lemon grass shrimp bouillon with chicken (& to stay on the soup we already had the cang dang, a green/​red curry soup also pretty good) and I got a chicken dish with chile paste & cashew nuts (gai pad med ma muang) — a fav of mine. I would also recommend the excellent pad pattaya gai, which we did not have tonight but certainly soon again!

My favorite casual Thai restaurant in Zürich. The food is simple but good — in my opinion, comparable to something you would find at a casual restaurant in Thailand. I haven’t had a bad dish here, so I recommend ordering what looks good (the menu has lots of photos ;-). You can get a delicious dish for about 20 CHF, which is as affordable as you’ll find good food in Zürich. You also don’t need reservations, which is a breath of fresh air.

Gleich in der Nähe der Helvetiaplatzes gelegen, finde ich es für den Kreis 4 sehr zentral. Die Inneneinrichtung hat mich nicht gerade vom Hocker gehauen, dafür das Essen um so mehr! YUMMI!
Was für eine riesige Portion für diesen Preis! :) Ich hatte das PANÄNG GAI (Nr.56), welches eine sehr gute Schärfe hatte. Wuah, ich liebe Curry! Hier ein rotes Curry und Rindfleisch gewählt. Man wird nämlich gefragt. Irgendwie passt das meiner Meinung nach sehr gut zusammen. Dazu noch eine Portion Reis.
Ich war satt und hatte auch noch ein Abendessen, welches mir freundlicherweise empfohlen wurde. Der Service war allgemein schnell und freundlich! Und hey ich war mit einem absoluten Thai-​Liebhaber hier und der war begeistert. Ein sehr gutes Zeichen! :)
Am Mittag ist es sehr voll und laut, es ist für mich kein Ort für ein Date, doch perfekt für ein warmes Mittagessen — entweder zum Mitnehmen oder gleich vor Ort essen. Doch Achtung: Ihr werdet danach nach dem Essen riechen (spielt ja keine Rolle, solange man zuckersüss ist, oder?!:D).

Zürich hat kulinarisch generell ein hohes Level und auch für Fans der asiatischen Küche wird einiges geboten — das Ah-​Hua toppt aber definitiv alles was ich bisher in Zürich hatte aus der Richtung und ist definitiv unter den Top 3 Thais in Europa von dem was ich bisher probiert habe. Die Qualität des Essens ist fantastisch und es schmeckt wirklich fast wie in Thailand, also keine runtereuropäisierte Version ohne Gewürze sondern genauso vielfältig wie es sein soll. Die Preise sind (für Zürich Verhältnisse) für die Qualität sensationell günstig. Das Lokal selbst hat mehr Kantinenatmosphäre und zu Mittag herrscht Massenabfertigung — aber bei der Essensqulität ist mir das dann auch egal. Absolut top!

Pad Thai, sum tom salad, spring rolls, 2 beers and a coke came to 63 CHF. This place was packed on a Sunday evening, a good sign. The atmosphere was lively.

Best Thai food I’ve had in Zurich. Cheap prices. Good sized portions for sharing. Friendly service. Very authentic feeling (your clothes will smell like a Thai kitchen the day after). Often crowded, and rightfully so.

Leider ist es aber ziemlich laut im Restaurant und eignet sich deshalb nicht wirklich für ein gemütliches Dinner.
Das Essen ist aber meeegaaa fein und ich würde die red thai gäng däng currysuppe mit Reis bestimmt wieder bestellen. Beim nächsten Mal vielleicht eher Take Away ;-)

Asiatisch vom feinsten. Und damit meine ich wirklich asiatisch, nicht die ewig gleichen 3 Thai-​Curries, die man in der Schweiz kriegt. Rot, Grün und Pänang.
Entsprechend kommen auch viele gemischte Paare und sonst etliche Asiaten her.
Unbedingt reservieren, oder sich auf lange Wartezeiten einrichten.

If you like fried fish with curry sauce then this is the best place in town. Always full, friendly and fast.

Since Chinese food is quite difficult to find in Zurich, Ah-​Hua definitely makes my Top 3 list, although there is plenty of space for improvement left open.
The interior decoration and menu design are a bit hard to stomach, but the actual food has been pretty consistently good. Be prepared to share your table with many other people though as they cram too many people on the quite small tables in my opinion. Service can be a bit chaotic too but not surprisingly as they are usually dealing with so many people at once.

This place is really popular. Which means that they have you share tiny tables with whomever and don’t give you an option. According to my new tablemates, this is their MO.
The food is slightly above average. The green curry was a bit flat in flavor.

I cannot believe what just happened. Three of us were in a table of four (with prior reservation) and had already ordered. While waiting, the owner allowed a new customer to sit down on our table without asking us. We told the owner very nicely that we did not appreciate the fact that the owner did not ask us in advance. To our surprise she told us that it was to be expected at her restaurant and if I wanted such service I should go to other restaurants in Thai. We could not believe what we heard was right and asked to confirm our understanding. When we did ask, the owner started screaminh and shouting at us in Thai to the point that other customers in the restaurant started staring at her. What I have experienced is absolutely ABSURD and I am extremely furious at how the owner treated us. I highly recommend anyone to refrain from visiting this restaurant.

This place positively surprised me because the prices were great, and the portions were equally great.
I made a reservation because apparently this place can get super packed (which it did) but they seemed to get a bit confused. They managed to seat us without a problem though. I hate it when I feel rushed, but I kind of did, just because people were waiting and wanted to sit, and we were still talking/​finishing our drinks. BUT to be fair, they said the reservation was good till 8:30, so it’s ok that we had to leave.
Anyway, on to the food.
I ordered the glass noodles with brown soy sauce and shrimp. The portion was big, the shrimp were huge, plentiful, and delicious, and the noodles were fine but the sauce was a little lacking.
My friends Red Curry chicken was out of this world. SHOOT! It was good. It was creamy and had a really big red curry taste without it being too spicy.
My boyfriends cashews with chicken in a tangy sauce was pretty good! It had a nice flavor.
The first go was a little rough. I was too scared to order anything that was even remotely spicy because of previous reviews (thanks Jamie!), and it’s good that I played it safe the first time. The poor couple next to us was dying with their green curry. It was actually a little entertaining watching them try to choke it down. They would take a deep breath before each bite, and then sweat, drink a bunch of water, and move on to the next one. I probably watched them for way too long… but really, they couldn’t handle it.
I think it’s just a matter of learning what you like here, but it takes a go or two. Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to come back, but I wanted to. The prices were really great and the food came out quickly. For me, it’s kind of rare to find such a good restaurant with so many options (and pictures), all for such a good price in Zurich. Their seafood dishes were even pretty low. Almost all of the dishes were between 18−20CHF.

Simple Interior but by far the best Thai Food I’ve ever had outside of Thailand
The ambience inside the restaurant is pretty average and it tends to get extremely crowded which is why we used to order at Ah-​Hua for take away quite a lot.

Their menu is large and everything we’ve tried was super fresh and delicious, the portions are usually big enough to eat the leftovers at a later time.
They’re also quite quick and very reliable I must say.
Highly recommended, all around great kitchen.

The place is quite small, and our group was large enough,
that lingering longer would have been tough.
It was cheap, tasty, and packed on a Thursday night–
I think this place must be doing some things right. ;-)

Gleich vorweg: Das Essen hier ist sicher 5-​Sterne-​würdig. Und die Leute kommen hier auch nur deswegen her. Gemütlich ist es nämlich nicht. Und der Service ist auch eher naja.
Von vorne. Wir hatten mit einer Gruppe von 10 Personen reserviert. Es war aber nur ein Tisch für 8 Personen bereit, die andern haben wir reingequetscht. Das Menu, in Form einer gebundenen Bilderbuches lag schon auf den Plätzen verteilt. Echt praktisch, so kann man sich nämlich auch die Bilder anschauen. Im Ah Hua gibts nämlich nicht nur die Standard-​Currys, sondern auch jegliche andere, spezielle Gerichte.
Die Preise sind schwer in Ordnung. Ca. 19 Franken für ein Poulet-​Gericht, dazu 3 Franken für den Reis. Ein Bier kostet 4.50. Echt günstig!
Das Ambiente ist aber eher schlecht. Es herrscht ein grosser Andrang, die Leute stehen Schlange um hierhin zu kommen. Eine Reservation lohnt sich also immer! An der Wand hängt ein Fernseher, es läuft irgend einen Scheiss. Egal.
Irgendwann kann man dann auch mal bestellen. Die Getränke kommen fix — das Essen braucht etwas länger. Und vor allem kamen keine zwei Gerichte gleichzeitig — bei 10 Personen sind das 10 Mal! Schon ein bisschen Mühsam, es muss also echt möglich sein Essen gleichzeitig zu servieren, Leute!
Auf dem Tisch standen zwei Kleenex-​Boxen. Ich scherzte anfangs noch, dass sei weil das Essen hier so scharf sei. Ha! Das Essen hier ist nämlich noch schärfer ;-) Man kann zwischen Stufe 1, 2 und 3 wählen, wobei Stufe 2 echt schon verdammt scharf ist! Die Kleenex-​Schachtel erwies sich als äussert nützlich.
Meine Nr 39, Gai Pad King Oon (Ingwer, Zwiebeln und Frühlingszwiebel gebraten mit Poulet) schmeckte einfach absolut hervorragend. Und auch rund um mich herum waren alle absolut glücklich, mit dem was sie assen.
Essen und Preise Top, Ambiente und Service eher Flop. Trotzdem 4 Sterne von mir, ich komme bald wieder! Das Ah-​Hua darf sich sehr wohl als eines der besten Zürcher Thai-​Restaurants schmücken.

Someone told me that you should never eat at restaurant that has pictures of its food on their menus. Here is the exception to the rule. If you are looking for a romantic setting to woo a love interest, this is not your place. If you wish to be pampered on by waiting staff and silver service, walk straight this place. However, if you want the best damm Thai food in town, come right in. This place sets out to do one thing, and one thing damm well. And its food. And they do it damm well. I have visited this place already twice in the last week and am going back tomorrow. That’s how good it is. Every dish, and I mean every dish, so far has been outstanding. And they taste as good as they look on their menus ;) You won’t be disappointed. The place is simple, rustic and needless to say popular. Easy to come without a reservation as the style is bums on seats, i.e. fit as many people on a table as possible, so you shouldn’t have a problem sharing your table with anyone. In terms of price, this place is fantastic value considering its located in one the most expensive cities in the world to eat out in.

Ich kann nicht sagen, dass ich immer da zum Abendessen bin, aber wenn ich mal da bin, dann immer satt und glücklich. Für Zürich kann das lokal quasi günstig bezeichnet werden. Dekoration oder Beleuchtung steht nicht im Vordergrund, aber die Leute stehen auch nicht daher vor dem A Hua an, sondern wegen dem leckeren Essen.

Ah Hua is my new Shangri-​la! The lines out the door at 8 or 9 o’clock for dinner tell me people are on to it. To further demonstrate their status, they have two locations that are only 200 meters from each other and you still have to wait for a table. Once you sit down though, you’re going to receive a return on your investment of time. The food at Ah Hua is Thai. The reason it tops my list for Asian is Zürich (so far) is its authenticity: the food, the atmosphere, the employees.
The food: A huge menu of Thai specialties with all of the usual characters and a couple new ones. There’s nothing missing! Their salad selection is camouflaged among the other dishes and randomly scattered throughout the menu. The Thais make incredible salads. Sometimes with cold beef or shrimp, nuts, some with fruit in delicious sour sweet dressings. It’s all good! The menu must have 100 items! It offers the extent of most Thai places and then some. Try the ground beef with shrimp and crunchy green sator beans in chili sauce. Rice is not included with most dishes and costs a few francs extra. One of my favorites is crispy whole fried fish. They offer about 5 different versions, all in different sauces and styles. Also love the chitlins and greens, for lack of a better description.
It’s one of the few Asian or Thai places in Zürich that offers the carousel of heat — dry and wet chilis to turn up the thermostat. Most Thai food, which should normally be one of the ferociously spicy cuisines in the world is nothing of the sort in Switzerland. I once had to assure a Thai food shop owner that I wasn’t Swiss before she let me buy one of the fresh curry pastes hidden toward the back of the shelf. Apparently it was the real deal… fire in the hole type of thing. It wasn’t that bad… Nonetheless, I’m happy to add my own heat. I especially fancy the fresh chilies in fish sauce.
The prices are a little high for Asian but I may simply still not be used to Swiss prices. I’m happy to pay though!
Service can be slow and unsociable during busy times, but it’s always busy times at Ah Hua. Bottom line: come enjoy the incredible food and you’ll leave like a happy Buddha. ! (kr hâi jà-​rern aa-​han!)

Dieses thailändische Lokal wird von einer Grossfamilie seit Jahren aus dem Nichts zum Erfolg geführt.
Die zweite Ausgabe de Ah-​Hua 1 ist seit 2006 etwa zweihundert Meter von der ersten Version entfernt.
Hier sind die Menus noch erschwinglich und halten sich unbeugsam an die Thai-​Küche.
Es ist auch nach wie vor ein Lokal für jedermann und jeder frau. Die Preise sind nach wie vor die gleichen, wie bei der Eröffnung des ersten Lokales 1998 und die Gerichte sind von neunzehn auf neunundsiebzig gestiegen!
Hut ab! Bei der Wirtschaftslage!

Das Ah-​Hua II bietet feinste thailändische Küche. Ich esse da also thailändisch und sitze praktisch im Schaufenster und lasse mir zusehen, wie ich thailändisch esse, damit alle sehen, wie offen ich doch bin und wie gut es mir schmeckt. Und es schmeckt mir tatsächlich.
Wenn auch meiner Meinung nach etwas kostspielig und leider eng, dennoch ein lohnenswertes Restaurant. Als ich eine Zeit lang dort gewohnt habe und ich durch die Enge meines Zimmer gezwungen wurde, die Aussenwelt zu erkunden, bin ich dort immer wieder gerne eingekehrt. Man sitzt dann mit einigen Leuten an einem eigentlich zu engen Tisch und wartet Ewigkeiten auf sein Essen, doch wird man dann belohnt. Da blättert man die fünfundzwanzig Franken für das Essen doch gerne hin.
Die Bedienung ist leider immer im Stress und manchmal etwas unfreundlich, aber auch darüber lässt sich angesichts des feinen Essens hin, hinwegsehen. Im Sommer schwitzt man wie ein Hund, weil die Küche sich gleich beim Essraum befindet und die einzige Öffnung nach draussen die Eingangstür ist. Könnte man draussen sitzen, würde ich das Ah-​Hua mit 5 Sternen belohnen, somit verdient es sich leider doch nur 4.

Wenn mann einen Restaurant mit satten und zufriedenen Magen verlaesst und sich das Portmonai nicht zu leicht anfuhlt dann hat mann gerade im Ah-​Hua gegessen.
Das groessere der zwei Ah-Hua’s liegt am Helvetiaplatz zentral und eignet sich perfekt fur einen Lunch oder Dinner in der Stadt. Da es aber so beliebt ist, ist eine Reservation ein Must fuer die, die nicht eine Stunde lang warten wollen.
Als mann am Tisch sitzt bekommt mann das groesste Menu die mann je gesehen hat. Sicher 300 Gerichte und ich wette drauf, alle sind genial.
Ich nimm immer das «number six with beef,» Und warum Englisch? Weil das nette Personal nur Englisch versteht, naturlich!
Der Rest vom Menu habe ich noch gar nicht angeschaut, ich wurde warscheinlich mein ganzer Lunch verbringen das Menu zu lesen anstatt zu essen. Darum bleib ich immer treu zu meinem Liebling: Pad Siyui mit Rindfleisch. Fein und gunstig, besser gehts nicht!

Wie gut, dass es diesen Thailänder gibt. Einer der letzten Bastionen, die jeglichem Trend an hippen Interieur und Asia– Lifestylefood trotz. Die Einrichtung ist solide und praktisch, gekocht wird in der Küche original thailändisch und ohne allzu großer Anpassung an den europäischen Gaumen und das Essen schmeckt einfach phantastisch.
Die Bedienung ist zwar auf Grund des meist starken Besuches gestresst, aber trotzdem freundlich. Meist sitzt man auf relativ kleinem Raum mit unbekannten Tischnachbarn zusammen, wobei sich dadurch manchmal nette Gespräche ergeben können. In der Karte sind eigentlich alle Gerichte noch einmal mit einem Photo versehen, so dass man trotz der meist unbekannten Namen eine für sich passende Auswahl treffen kann. Das Essen kommt dann auch recht schnell und ist ebenfalls zum Take Away erhältlich. Das Preis– Leistungsverhältnis ist für Zürich sehr gut und zu dem ist das Restaurant durch seinen Standort am Helvetiaplatz sehr zentral gelegen.
«Khoop khun khrap.»

Ich bin ein grosser Fan der asiatischen Küche und weiss eigentlich immer noch nicht, weshalb ich noch nie eine Reise in den asiatischen Raum an-​getreten habe. Das Essen alleine wäre schon einen Grund dafür.
Als ich dann von diesem Hotspot «Ah-​Hua» nur in hohen Tönen gehört habe, wollte ich diesen Ort unbedingt ausprobieren.
Für die Innendekorationen erhält das Ah-​Hua schon mal nicht die höchste Punktzahl, einfache Bestuhlung und das Ambiente wirkte karg.
Die Bedienung ist thailändisch sowie die Speisekarte. Im Voraus wurde mir das gebratene Hühnerfleisch mit Cashewnüssen empfohlen, somit wagte ich einen Versuch. Dazu gab es ein beliebiges Thai-​Bier und ein Glas Hahnenwasser. Das Essen schmeckte vorzüglich und die Portion war sehr grosszügig, ausserdem war der Service schnell und freundlich. Auch bei den Preisen gibt es überhaupt nichts zu meckern, leider wurde uns aber das Hahnenwasser verrechnet. Normalerweise wird man im voraus informiert. Der (zu Beginn) freundliche Kellner wollte sich aber deswegen tatsächlich noch auf eine Diskussion einlassen, so dass wir so schnell wie möglich an die frische Luft wollten.
Ich würde aber trotzdem nochmals hingehen, das Preis– und Leistungsverhältnis ist spitze!

Alle schwärmten immer von diesem super Thailänder gleich beim Helvetiaplatz. So musste ich es natürlich auch versuchen, selbst wenn ich ein bisschen heikel bin mit asiatischer Küche. Diese ist oft scharf und das mag ich nun mal überhaupt nicht. Nun denn, da sass ich mit einem Freund in diesem Lokal. Die Atmosphäre entsprach so gar nicht meinem Stil was auswärts Essen anbelangt. Das Interieur orientiert sich mehr an einfacher Bedienung als an stilistischer Einrichtung. So impliziert es eher einen schnellen als einen gemütlichen Restaurantbesuch. Schnell wählen, schnell bestellen, schnell essen und schnell wieder gehen um schnell dem nächsten Kunden Platz zu machen. Das mit dem Schnellen ist jedoch eine Sache. Die Karte ist sehr gross und bietet so viele verschiedene Menus, dass ich so was von überfordert war, geschweige denn schnell im Bestellen. Erst einmal bestellt, geht es dann doch ein Weilchen. Kein Wunder bei dem immer sehr gut besuchten Lokal.
Ich hole mir wenn dann etwas als Take Away, das passt mir persönlich besser ins Bild von thailändischer Küche.
Die Preise sind inzwischen ziemlich stolz geworden, dafür ist es täglich geöffnet.

In my opinion, Ah-​Hua II is the best Thai restaurant in Zurich. It is not a cosy place, but clean and authentic — with Thai television on the flatscreen. Instead of napkins, there are clean-​ex-​boxes on the tables –no frills. The food is always delicious. During our latest visit, we had the fried mixed vegetables with shrimps on an oyster sauce (CHF 19) and the Gung Pad Nam Pig Pau (Chicken with baby corn on a curry sauce, CHF 19), with rice (CHF 3). Everything was perfect. The dishes are served rapidly, the staff is always friendly and efficient.

Bin hier manchmal über Mittag. Die Protionen sind ausreichend und der verlangte Preis angemessen.
Ich ess hier meistens eine Udon, die sind echt empfehlenswert.

Was einem beim Betreten des Ah-​Hua sofort ins Auge sticht, ist die typische relativ lieblose (und doch sehr authentische) Einrichtung von asiatischen Kleinrestaurants. Also nicht geeigent für Liebhaber von stundenlangem Dinieren bei Kerzenlicht. Voll ist das Restaurant aber doch immer, denn das Essen ist sehr gut und relativ preiswert. Die Bedienung ist asiatisch freundlich und flink und das Essen kommt sehr schnell. Allenfalls könnte bemängelt werden, dass die Stange Bier ein bisschen zu wenig kühl war.
Die Gerichte können auf Wunsch scharf oder mild bestellt werden. Aber Vorsicht, wenn man mild bestellt, muss das nicht zwingend heissen, dass das Gericht nicht scharf ist.
Alles in allem relativ authentische Thai-​Gerichte zu vernünftigen Preisen (auch wenn wir bei der Grösse der Karte zuerst ein bisschen überfordert waren).
