Is it possible to overhype a Museum of Miniatures? Let me be clear — the achievement here is no small feat.* I cannot even begin to fathom how much patience and talent it must take to put horseshoes on a flea, draw Jesus on a poppy seed, or publish the Guinness Book of Records-recognized smallest book in the world at 0.9×0.9 mm. Literally. These are the types of things on display, under microscopes, at the The Museum of Miniatures. They are unique, very detailed, and beyond tedious. But is it exciting? Eh. For 100 czk, I was able to tour this entire, unsurprisingly small museum in about ten minutes. And that was stretching it so I didn’t look like a dick. The time it takes to make each piece is unfairly, exponentially longer than the time it takes to view them. I feel for the artist, in that respect. That said, my favorites were probably the caravan of camels passing through the eye of a needle(a nice double meaning piece) and the sailboats on the wing of a mosquito(because that one is just kind of insane-looking). It’s also pretty out of the way — past Prague Castle, past Loreta. And after seeing those landmarks, well, The Museum of Miniatures is frankly inferior. Given its size and niche audience, it will never be a tourist destination like its bigger, brasher brethren down the road. But it is certainly different, and like no place I’ve been before. I had randomly put it on my sight-seeing list for Prague, likely subconsciously(and wrongly) expecting something grander. I’m glad I made it here, but once is enough. If you’re in the area, give it a go if you think it’s your thing. If not, seriously, don’t sweat the small stuff. Ba-dum-bump. *Sorry. Had to. It was right there!
