Outstanding location and ambiance… well enjoyed the food and vibe of this place… a lot of meat options and traditional Czech options along with great beer… go for the ambiance of the old monastery… stay for the candlelight food and drink!

Gorgeous atmosphere… and the food is amazing(!) but it is also is very very heavy(probably because of its authenticity). An amazing experience.

When we reached the place, I couldn’t believe this was a restaurant, but I was in the Czech Republic, so I let my sense of adventure take over. The name of the restaurant was Peklo, which we later learned means«Hell.» The small door led to a descending staircase and red lights flickered in a kitschy attempt to play up the theme. We were led inside an underground grotto which had been transformed into a dark Czech eatery. next we knew, we were sampling wines and eating pork knee, pronounced with the K by our now friendly server. The k-née comes on its own serving platter, with its own serving utensils instead of a regular fork and k-nife. A little pickle, mustard and horseradish are the garnishes of choice. Now, I never thought I’d be eating a pig’s knee in the former Czechoslovakia, but this thing was roasted to a perfect tenderness the likes of which I may never have again. Suffice it to say, our first dinner in Prague left us wondering what else was in store. READMOREAT:

I’m all over the board with Peklo. I ended up at Peklo with my husband after we were not permitted entry into the monastery because they were closed for a private function. It was a cold day with the temperatures hovering around freezing and we didn’t want to sit outside(though there were small heat lamps), so we walked across the cobblestone car park, up the stairs, and then down the stairs and into the cave restaurant that is Pelko. The key selling point for Peklo is the atmosphere, which I agree is unique. It’s located inside a cave and has huge dramatic stone ceilings and walls which would have been totally awesome if the place hadn’t smelt musty and moldy and had the décor been updated any more recently than when it opened back in the 12th century and was visited by King Charles IV. The entire interior, including the red carpet, water fountain, and upholstery need to go. The toilets smell like a backed up sewer. I just could not get over the smell but… …apparently I got over the smell at some point to allow me to stay for the length of three blueberry beers(70CZK/beer which is expensive for Prague)! The best beer I drank in Prague. So delicious. The bartender was super duper friendly and thanked me when I gushed about how much I loved the blueberry beer. If you were to stumble upon Peklo or even if you are reading this review and planning a visit, then my recommendation is to pop in for a beer or two or three or even more if your ability to smell is terrible or is broken or you don’t mind sitting in a musty cave. If you have a sensitive nose as I do, then I recommend visiting Pelko after you’ve already got a couple of pints under your belt and your tolerance to really poor smelling venues has become less sensitive. Side note: Average age of the patrons while we were of the age to be enjoying a Viking River Cruise. We were the youngest patrons by 2+ decades.

Awesome Atmosphere! We are so glad that the concierge recommended this spot. What a truly amazing dining space. It is underground in a cave. They serve beer made at the monastery– the day we went they were serving a great blueberry beer. Just order beers and the giant meat, cheese and bread board and sit back and take in the atmosphere. So memorable!

Not only was this my best and favorite meal in Prague, it was my favorite in my whole trip through several countries and one of my favorite meals I can remember recently anywhere. Four prague, it is pricey. But, extremely reasonable for anywhere else. I had a Mushroom risotto and a duck entrée. Both were great, special and worth every Koruna. To top it off, service was very good and the setting is truly unique. Pretty much the entire restaurant is essentially inside a 700-year-old cave, which served as a wine cellar. I definitely recommend this as a must for your visit to Prague.

Nämlich das, was zwei Männer aus unserer Runde bestellten: The Hungry Man’s Plate. Herrlich :)
