Went to Chris Madrids for lunch yesterday. Have not been there in a long, long time and just figured it was time for one of those wonderfully 50’s style burgers. The food was good, my meat patty was a little dry and the bun was a little closer to over grilled than I like, but other than that, the same, nostalgic place we use to frequent way more often. Fun place to enjoy, we just had the burgers and beer so can not comment on the sides, but enjoyed.

Cheese cheese and cheese… they do not skimp on these! Burger was huge! One of the best nacho ‘pizza like’ bean and cheese I had and the mango margaritas at $ 6.50! You can’t beat that! Make sure you take your peptide or Alka seltzer as all this oily food will definitely give you the burn or heart attack lol!!!

This is one of those places that when it opened had a system and as the years went by the place expanded but the system stayed the same. So with the above in mind, let’s talk about the line. We got there around 1:00 on a Saturday and the line was out into the middle of the main dining room. As I waited and waited I drew closer to what I thought was the front of the line. Oh… not so fast, I entered a smaller room that I suspect might have been the original part of the restaurant. Once in this room I noted this part of the line wrapped around the room until you got to a very narrow area where there were two registers. So after about 15 minutes of waiting I ordered. I ordered the bean and cheese nachos and two burgers with cheddar cheese. The nachos came out and they were really good. The thing about the nachos, and you need to know this if you don’t already don’t know, is that the nachos here are not what passes for nachos everywhere else. Nevertheless they we very good and really just enough. The salsa bar had pico and a salsa… both were good. After a while the burgers came out and they were outstanding. Really one of the best I’ve had in recent times. I’m not sure how much cheese was actually on the burger, but I can tell you it was a whole lot. We ordered two sodas. They apparently only have one size and if you want a refill you have to go back to where you got it from. I would be nice if they had a refill area somewhere in the restaurant. But again back to the comment of this place had a system on opening day and they haven’t changed.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said; this place is freaking delicious! A small variety of burgers and toppings and two sizes: regular at ¼ lb or the macho at ½ lb. My favorite is the cheddar cheezy because it comes dripping with cheese but the tostado is also my favorite(minus the onions) because they have the best damn refried beans to put on this burger! The buns are grilled y’all! GRILLED so the buttery goodness just enhances the burger flavor and yes, despite cheese or beans and cheese — you can always taste the flavorful meat. Go. Enjoy. You can thank me later.

Amazing hamburgers! I had the porkey with jalapeños, absolutely delicious. My friends had the classics and were equally impressed. Will return.

No offense to the Chris Madrid fans, but this is not the best burger in SA let alone ever. For starters, the meat to bun to toppings ratio is way off. However, the bean and cheese nachos were top notch.

I LOVE Chris Madrid’s! If you’re a cheese person you will too! Seriously! When you arrive the parking is usually pretty good M-W but if you decide to go on a Thursday-Saturday expect it to be kinda busy. They are closed on Sunday’s. They have a big menu board and have created regular menu’s so people can take a closer look at all the amazingness they offer. You have two choices you can order their regular sized hamburger which is pretty big OR if you dare… THEMACHO. A very large burger which I usually end up splitting with someone else lol. My favorite is the Cheddar Cheesy with cheese fries as you can tell I love cheese! haha My family gravitates more to the tostadas, tostada burger or nachos which are all equally amazing! There is an area where you can grab your own plastic silverware, the place is pretty spacious like I said when it’s not busy. There is indoor and outdoor seating as well as a bar area towards the back. They also have a lot of cool Chris Madrid’s shirts and other souvenirs in case you want to purchase a shirt for the memory of an amazing burger! just sayin’ Overall, I really do enjoy these burgers but I only try to eat them every once in a while because they are pretty large and when i do go it’s usually on the days I have saved up an appetite! Whenever i’m asked for my favorite burger Chris Madrid’s is definitely on the list!

I’ve had great burgers. Plenty of great hamburgers. These are not great by any means what-so-ever. This must be some bizarre San Antonio phenomenon. It wasn’t bad but it isn’t the best by a considerably wide margin. And the strange fleshy colored anthropomorphic hamburger hanging on the wall is quite creepy.

I’ve been wanting to come here for a long time, because I know it is a San Antonio land mark. I didn’t realize it was in the sketchy part of town, but that’s ok I guess. I had the cheesy burger and fries. Both were very good. I loved all the cheese. I took a star off because the dining area is loud and chaotic and also they use all disposal Styrofoam plates and cups even for dining in. That’s wasteful. I might come back but now that I’ve had it, I’m good. Worth a try once.

Delicious food in a casual atmosphere! I will say the the staff here are beyond great! I witnessed a customer be totally out of line with the checkout girls. This customer dropped the f-bomb and acted like a child all over sugar on a margarita. No one should have to take the vile disgusting attitude this grown woman spewed at staff. The cashier was gracious and went above and beyond to accommodate with a smile. Please know this positive attitude did not go unnoticed. My only ask, next time throw that bitch out and tell her to get her sugar somewhere else.

The burgers are very large here especially if you get the macho size version of it. The burger I tried was the parky burger that included bacon with it and extra cheddr cheese and what can I say it’s a handfull. The patty is flat and they do this to make the burger seem larger than it it and with all that extra cheese addednon top it just adds to that large visual in size. They provide plenty of bacon on it and not just small thin strands that you see in other burger joints so I was happy about that. The fries are delicious as well but not as crispy as I would like them but they pass the test for me. Depending on the time you decide to go parking will be limited and waiting for your order can easily be over 20 minutes. My wife and I went on Tuesday evening after leaving the river walk so it was not too busy but the restaurant was nearly to the brim inside. I just hope that the new owner updates the interior chairs, tables, restrooms, and over all décor to bring a more lively experience. Some music playing in the background would be great as well with some better lighting too. Overall the food was great, service was quick, but the place needs some work.

People who think Chris Madrids is a great burger place either: 1. Live near it and have a neighborhood bias. 2. Have never actually eaten a great hamburger. 3. Or, have never traveled more than a few miles from where they were born. These are the only conclusions I can come up with as to why anyone would think Chris Madrid’s burgers are great. They’re not. Not even close.

lunch food: cheddar cheezy. most places equate quantity as good food. this is not the case. it is bigger than most burgers around but does not sacrifice in quality. that cheesiness really comes through. i was expecting something crispy, but it was gooey all the way. they dont skim on the toppings either. i had to put my face down to the tray to eat up the leftovers. ***4/5 service: its a big place. i thought it was going to be a small restaurant from the outside, but theres outside seating too. the order comes out fast. ***4/5 value: expensive for a typical burger, especially with no fries, but not the worst i paid for a burger. ***3/5

If you are a burger and cheese lover you are guaranteed to love Chris Madrids! I hadn’t been in years but recently met friends for dinner at Chris Madrids! The burgers are delicious and overloaded with cheese. The food is priced just right. We will definitely be back for more! Free chips are during happy hour. The only suggestion we have is to offer chili to add to burgers or fries.

I haven’t ate here for a couple of years and I decided to take my friends here to try their burgers. It’s not as good as I remember but the overall experience was good. It’s a great place for large families or large groups of friends to hangout and eat at an affordable price. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Alright y’all I’m going to just lay it out on the table and provide a very valid theory… If there is ever a shortage of Cheddar Cheese or an increase in price for that ooey gooey liquid gold(sorry Velveeta), you can blame it on Chris Madrid’s. The word modesty doesn’t exist here at Chris Madrid’s and I’m not complaining! This local gem is a staple amongst San Antonians and you will easily find yourself waiting in line to grab a bite to eat and a table. You won’t find a a frivolous menu with a huge array of menu offerings. Nope just classic items like burgers, nachos, and fries. Their menu items are stacked with cheese when you order it and their Cheddar Cheezy is insane! You’ll find more cheese than you need but it’s perfect to put on your fries. The fries are large enough to share with a friend btw. Their Macho and Cheddar Cheezy burgers are solid staples here and I love them. To truly enjoy the burger you might not want to eat a few hours before so you can have the appetite to finish them!

About 10 years ago, the USA Today published their list of the top 10 hamburgers in the country. They listed the All American Drive-In located on Long Island as their #1 burger, and Chris Madrid’s in San Antonio as #2. Chris Madrid’s is very good, no doubt, and certainly one of the best burgers(if not THE best) in San Antonio, and I love it — but the 2nd best burger in the country? I’m not sure about that. Don’t get me wrong about this restaurant, I don’t have any significant complaints, I visit often and have deep affection for their wonderful food. Chris Madrid’s is one of the few non-Mexican food icons in San Antonio. Their Tostada Burger with the chips and refried beans built into the hamburger is classic San Antonio. You’ll love the quirkiness of the restaurant layout and décor. The outdoor patio isn’t anything fancy, and it’s not covered, but it’s homey and comfortable and a fun informal place to meet friends for lunch. Several years ago they expanded the parking on the South side of the restaurant so now you don’t have to walk from blocks away. Chris Madrid’s probably has the most consistent tasting food I’ve ever found. It never varies from one visit to the next. Even after their founder Chris Madrid past away in 2012, nothing has changed. The fries are always fresh cut, the burgers include cheese that blankets the meat and melts down all the way to your plate, and the macho nachos are something late night dreams are made of. If you visit at lunch time, come early, particularly toward the end of the week when they are always very busy. During pleasant weather when customers can comfortably sit outside, the wait can be long but seating doesn’t become a problem. However, when everyone is forced to sit inside due to rain or cold, be prepared to fight for a table. But believe me, the fight is worth it.

It was ok. I think the burgers are overrated. I actually enjoy burger-fi and Freddie’s more. The fried weren’t that good, soggy. The mango margarita I paid for was way over price for 5.49. It was barely 11 ounces of liquid. The atmosphere was friendly and I enjoyed that more than the food.

Over rated– Madrids been in San Antonio since 1977. It’s 2015 and they still live in 1977. When san antonio quits living on the premise of «My family has been going forever» to is there a value proposition to where I’m spending my money you will find there are 20 other places who work harder for your money than Madrids. Lame place who hopes their history keeps them rich. FYI spend some of that burger cash and make the place better and dust every once in awhile.

We made sure we got there right before the lunch rush and right after they open there doors at 11 am. As soon as you walk in the atmosphere of the place greets you and let’s you know that you are welcomed. It wasn’t as soon as we got there and by the time we placed our order the crowd begins to make there way to this burger haven. It wasn’t the best burger I have had but it definitely ranks up there with the best, every place has its vibes or there very own unique way of why they succeed but this place it’s got to be the pile of melted cheese on your burger. There signature on there crown jewel, the burger is nice and juicy and a bit on the greasy side but come on isn’t that what a burgers got to be…

As I approached the joint, I was thrown off by the outside of the building. From the outside it looks really crappy, but once I stepped inside I felt like I walked into an entirely different place. The inside is big, fun, and well put together. They also have an outside seating area with benches and shade umbrellas. That being said, I was excited to eat here because of all the positive reviews, but it really is just an ehhh burger. I tried both the flaming jalapeño cheddar burger and the cheddar cheezy burger. Before I get into the taste of the burgers in more detail, let me just say that the burgers are MASSIVE. If you don’t have a huge appetite, stick with the smaller sized burger. Now, the cheddar cheezy burger was better than the jalapeño cheddar burger because the jalapenos dominated in taste. I really couldn’t taste much else on the jalapeño burger. On the cheddar cheezy burger, you could taste the meat more, but it was still average. The meat is super thin, sticks way outside of the bun(which is really annoying), and is pretty bland. It is nothing special.

Greasy Fries… they tend to cook too many fries in advance. They get a bit soggy with grease. I like my food hot and cooked when I order. Long wait Thursday & Friday’s at lunch. Probably dinner too. I haven’t been on weekends, so I don’t know how busy it gets… I do like the Tostada burger which has referred beans and cheddar cheese. Recently they raised prices 20%. That’s a pretty big jump. We won’t be going as often! They should spend some of their profits remodeling. The order process is ridiculous. You have to squeeze past other patrons at the cashier, often times bumping into them, because theirs no room to pass.

FOOD: delicious. unhealthy. but you know what you are getting into when you come here. b/c its probably not health that brought you in the door we had: 1) the tostada burger. of course you order this. it’s what they are known for, no crees? I really wanted to order the bacon cheeseburger but honestly you can make that at home or eat anywhere else. try this. period. its great. if you don’t like it, there’s either something wrong with you or someone else at the table will. trust me. even picky people will like it 2) cheesy jalapeño. My husband loves the spicy. the hotter the better.(menos the 4 horsemen) but even he agreed he wished he had ordered the tostada after this battle. I clearly won. the fries are good but not once they lose heat(temp). the layout: it’s odd. you have to follow the snake line, order and then wait for your food to be called out later. and pick it up. pray for a seat to be open or just have your party hold seats for you. indoor and outdoor seating limited parking small sized cups for beverages definitely bring those who have never been to try it out. maybe run there. and run home. Even then can you handle 1600 calorie burger for dinner or lunch? make room in that day’s diet. You will need it!

Came here on a weekday around 11am, before the crowd came in. The burger came out hot, cheesy, and greasy. For some people, this image is a scary thought. This restaurant is not for the light-hearted, healthy earth burger type foodie. If you want a greasy, juicy, huge burger ladened with cheese, this is the place to go. The burger is fairly big and will keep any hungry person satisfied for hours. The fries are coarsely cut with peel on and chewy/crispy. Why both? Well, there’s variety to what you get. I can’t say it’s my favorite burger place, but it’s definitely a good solid greasy hamburger for those days you want that 80⁄20 meat with all the drippings. Come early, or suffer the fate of waiting in line. The photos really say all.
