This place was brought to my attention by a Groupon offer for 4 cocktails and a 12″ pizza. The atmosphere was pretty strange. Maybe it was because of the time(around 6pm on a Monday evening). The place was quite empty aside from some families(with loud kids, which to my mind kind of contradicts the fact they list themselves as not family-friendly, but I wasn’t complaining), the music was awkwardly a little too loud(maybe to fill the silence between the sparsely occupied tables), and the brightness on the TVs was quite distracting considering the otherwise low-lighting of the bar. Happily though, despite being instructed to order at the bar by our menus, we received table service, and our server was a very friendly and accommodating young guy. For drinks, we ordered a strawberry mojito and a raspberry mojito. Unfortunately the bar had run out of these two flavoured syrups, so we were offered passion fruit mojitos instead. They were okay — pretty sugary(I opted to downgrade to a regular mojito for my next drink to avoid the inevitable headache) but well-balanced, with just enough crushed ice(which the bartender spent ages hand-crushing, unnecessarily in my opinion, but it’s the thought that counts). However they were served in glasses that were just too long for the straws, which is something that always puzzles me — why do cocktails have to be served in unnecessarily unusual glassware? Sex and the City has SO much to answer for. Our pizza was okay… It was clearly assembled on a pre-prepared base so it didn’t differ too much from your standard supermarket thin crust affair. All in all I was a little bemused by the whole experience. The one thing that kept coming up in my mind was«Why is this place called Bread + Butter? It’s a bar, that serves your typical American bar food… but it sounds like it’s a bakery? Weird.» I was ready to reserve judgement, until we saw a group of boys no older than 16 attempting to get served at the bar. That was our queue to leave.

Amigo Carolyn E. and I were looking for a place to get a drink before our reservation at Topalambamba. We didn’t want to go too far, and we wanted to go to a place we hadn’t been before. I actually later realised that I have been to this place before — ages ago, and we sat in that conservatory place. I have also been to the Chippy upstairs(are they connected?) for fish, chips and tea(weirdest combination ever. Honestly. Love all of the things but I don’t think I want to combine them again, ever). We walked in, it was semi busy, but we managed to grab a table. To our delight, they have WooWoo on their cocktail menu(we were NOT willing to pay £5.25 for a bottle of Recorderlig), which is our Three Amigo signature cocktail. For that we paid £5, but Mmmm they are delicious. The bar staff is alright, the music went from being really catchy to really odd — but by the time it turned weird, it was time for us to head out again. The clientele in here is rather mixed — from little-clothing-wearing girls to post-work suits to leaving nights, a little bit of everything. What I will say, however, the potato wedges look really good. I also saw a poster for all you can eat pizza? All in all, it’s a decent enough place to grab a drink when you’re near here, the WooWoo was good, inconsistent, but good. It is very loud though.

To be honest, I’ve walked passed the alley that has signs on it for Bread + Butter and Chippy Doon the Lane but have never ventured down in to either. Well, this has all changed. My boyfriend and two of our friends enjoyed a day at a sneaker(yes, it was called a sneaker festival, not a trainer festival) in Finneston when we decided to venture in to the city for some drinks. Well, they drank, I had water, as I’m currently off the booze for health reasons. Anyway, we were looking for anyplace really that had seating and after trying a few of our normal haunts, we decided to check to see if we could get a seat here. Voila! We could! The catch was that the massive table we were able to score had to be back in a few hours time, which was fine by us. What an interesting concept this place. It’s part cafeteria, part bar, part sports pub, part party hall. It really is a massive place with not a single style to call it’s own, rather a few mixed in. Loads of family sized wooden tables and benches to sit at, as well as cozy chairs, stool and mini tables. A mixed crowd of kids(yes, kids), families, groups of women and men, and of course us. Three dudes and me. Ha! The lot of us really don’t understand why pubs/bars are starting to cater to having kids in among all the drinking and the booze but I digress… The guys decided they were going to partake in the cocktails they had on their list. Mai-thai, and a DeNiro. The Mai-thai, they said was pretty boozy but good and the DeNiro was really sweet. The DeNiro was Jack Daniels, vanilla essence, coke and a piece of orange. They all agreed, instead of an orange, it would have been better with a cherry. I enjoyed my water just fine(boo!!) — but the waiter didn’t seemed pleased about serving it. He basically threw it on the table, not even asking who may have ordered it. On top of that, even though I asked for a lemon, it came barely with any ice and no lemon. Oh well. Anyway, I think this could be a place to bring the girls back for a night out. The guys I was with weren’t too keen on the music being like in a club and it just wasn’t their style. The drinks are a bit pricey, but for one or two, it’s ok.

£6 for a meal and a beer isn’t bad. Quick and in the middle of city centre makes it even better. Plenty of seating and the staff are nice enough. This place is sort of a hidden gem if you’re in a real hurry but want some decent food that isn’t entirely fried.

Really nice pizzas at 2 for £11.50. Just the thing you need to sop up many, many(many) cocktails. Was in here for a ‘girly’ afternoon/night out with family(cousins, Mum, Aunt). They all love their fancy cocktails and B+B delivers — I noticed some styled & named after favourite childhood sweeties including a drumstick lolly cocktail, and a skittlebomb shot. Even on a Saturday there was special offers(some spirit & mixer combos for £3). We passed quite a few hours in here and the bar staff managed to keep a cheery and friendly attitude, even in the face of my drunken relatives, who are more than a little embarrassingly rowdy. Very good — would drag Mum here again!

1st thing you notice, is that their chef looks like Alfredo Linguini from the movie ratatouille. And when I told the bar woman this she giggled and said everyone says that:) I’ve been here during a quiz night before, and they give you free pizza on the night. It’s a very stylish looking bar restaurant. Little pricey as far as I remember for certain drinks. But today, I’m having a coffee. They have a huge projector hanging from the roof. I’m not sure what gets shown, maybe football(soccer). The inside is very open plan looking, it’s warm. It has music playing, but I. An hear myself think. I really do think this would be a fun place to come for a night out. It’s just off from buchanan street in one of the small side streets. Oh and the quiz is on tonight that I never knew:)

Great Value, Quick and Easy Canteen Lunch
It was 11:50 on a dank and dreary Thursday and already we were thinking about lunch! So we thought a wee bit of Bread and Butter might hit the spot. A gaggle of O.A.P’s were already gathering for the 12 o’clock opening, which bodes well because one thing the older generation can sniff out is a bargain.
It’s canteen service here, which is good if you’re in need of an express lunch and soon my wife and I(and our new-found senior citizen friends) were joined by business people, tourists and students alike. So without delay we joined the queue for our £5 lunch and drink deal(£6 of you want a bottle of beer). On offer? Well, a choice of curry, burger, chilli baked potato, fish, pasta, salad, steak pie, chicken etc… and they certainly pile it high. In fact I was filled to the gunnels, so that was me until breakfast reared it’s lovely head :)
Have to say that everyone else’s plate looked far superior to my cheese burger and next time I’ll plump for the steak pie, mushy peas with chip shop chips. Not to worry though as my burger reminded me of a Malaga € 2 non-descript meat burger and pint deal that somehow always tastes better on holiday. Ahhh — good times!

Great for 2−4−1 pizza and £8.50 bottles of house wine during the week. Weekends also offer a pizza+pitcher/bottle deal for £12. The pizzas are a bit cheese heavy,(and that’s coming from a cheese lover) and topping light, but for a tenner for 2 I won’t complain. The base is thin and crispy, and always perfectly cooked. Service was fairly quick, and there’s plenty of space and seating. I wouldn’t choose it for a meal or evening out, but for an after work drink and munch it does the job.

When turned down the alley that hides Bread & Butter, I was surprised by how decent the food was for the price. I also enjoyed the comfortable, spacious but still casual seating area. The lunch special was a steal — £5 for fish & chips, salad, baked beans/vegetables, AND a beer. Plus, the staff was very friendly, a welcome change from some of the bigger city chains. Tip: If you’re a student, speak up; we were offered a discount!

I ended up being left to entertain a friends elderly mother and chose this place as it was cheap and cheerful a lot of the items on the menu where 241. We ended having two pizza’s with coffee the food was ok but nothing special. It’s a place that has no real character and feel’s more like a student pub, not a place l would like to go to again in a hurry.

This is a great little spot for lunch, the £6 beer and food meal goes down a treat and theres no inevitable — ‘oh no its half past and my food isn’t here’ panic that comes with some lunch choices. Came one evening for 2 for 1 pizzas and were pretty good — and had a lovely cocktail — louisiana jam which was served in a jam jar, which I thought was a nice touch. Not sure I would want to go when Karbon was open as it may attract a more raucous clientele, but for a quick lunch or a mid week post work £1.50 tiger its just the ticket

In theory, Bread + Butter ought to be cool, but after popping my head in here for a potential meal… I quickly turned around and went elsewhere. For some reason it just didn’t appeal to me. However, I can see how others may be tempted with their £5 hot meal + soft drink, or £6 hot meal + Tiger. The setup is just a sleek modern canteen, with large wooden tables, and smaller tables spread throughout. They have a back patio for smokers(mmm… nicotine and a hot meal!). To the side is a bar, which serves up drinks well into the night when Karbon is open. Although I’m not tempted to try the food, it’s an overall fine place to grab drinks and to escape the downstairs chaos in Karbon, and prevent further hearing damage…

Been here a few times when I’m down that way, and it’s alright. They have decent meal deals and 2 for 1 pizzas Sunday — Thursdays. It looks great inside and they have a decent wee outdoors section that can get really cold. The bar is enticing, and it was only £1 or £1.50 a drink last time I was in here which was a cheap round for me after going other pricier places at the expense of my mates. A nice enough place, but if it’s food I am after I would rather go to The Chippy Doon the Lane next door.

The main draw to this place? £5 for a meal and a soft drink? not hard to figure out is it? In all honesty this place is a glorified canteen, same grub, same ordering, same feel despite all attempts to make it into a bar. Now this kind of thing may put people off a bit, however it is what it is, if that’s in anyway an explanation. I like the fact that you can just wander in and, if you can find a seat, go up and get your nosh and start eating within minutes. Now most pubs with all the best intentions in the world will see you waiting a good 1015 for your grub. Its cheap, decent enough in quality, or rather its what you would expect for a fiver and the setting is non offensive if a little uninspiring. Hey ho, its a decent place to grab some good old fashioned Scottish comfort food, perfect for a belly filler on a bitter cold Scottish day.

Bread + Butter is your average school dinner style canteen, masquerading as an upmarket eatery. They offer up pre cooked hot lunches that are dished up from a big hotplate of metal containers which aren’t very appealing. The food is pretty average, with classics like macaroni cheese to fill you up, served with a drink for just a fiver. This place is pretty stylish inside and they serve good coffee, which brings my rating up to three stars. An average lunch munch for a fiver.

I liked the idea of this place — hot meal(such as lasagne, macaroni, baked potatoes, pies) and a drink for £5 and in a rather fashionable and smart setting. I was lured in here with a friend by this very offer. However, I was a little disappointed. It was extremely busy and we struggled to find a table. When we did we were sharing it with a large group and our conversation was thus a little stilted — not ideal when we were meeting for a catch up. I also found the whole ordering thing rather confusing — I guess it’s what you would expect from a canteen but I wasn’t 100% sure how to order, what was included in the deal etc and it wasn’t made too clear in typical school canteen style. And the food wasn’t that great. It was ok but not much more and given that there are so many deals in the same price range elsewhere it wouldn’t be my first choice. I wouldn’t be averse to going back though for a quick, ordinary lunch.

As mentioned below, this place straddles a bizarre boundary between style bar and school-dinner canteen. It looks suitably slick, but just doesn’t feel quite right. I was in here on a Saturday evening not that long ago it wasn’t too busy and the atmosphere definitely edged more towards school canteen than young urbane hangout. It’s at it’s busiest when Karbon is open as they both share a smoking section, and quite a lot of the clubbers from downstairs come up here to escape the Sean Paul tunes on loop. At quieter times though, it’s okay but feels a bit directionless.

Pretty much a posh canteen. Or a canteen and bar in rather swanky settings. The settings themselves are nice enough — aimed quite directly at young professionals, with Wi-Fi throughout and an indoor outdoor smoking area — you know what I mean, one of those structures some establishments have set up in order not to alienate their smoking customers. The food, however, is quite disappointing. While the deal is good — lunch and any drink from tap for £5, the choice isn’t that wide, with pies and baked potatoes — standard canteen fare — and they don’t benefit much from sitting under the hot plate. Still, it’s not the worst. Convenient, cheap and worth a visit, but I can’t imagine you’ll want to repeat it much.

Have only been in Bread and Butter for drinks but found the bar an enjoyable experience, very bright and trendy with funky surroundings. The food aread did appear like a canteen but the menu sounded nice and was reasonably proced. Also has a lovely little terrace for smokers whch can be seen from the main bar and would be ideal on a sunny day!
